FSU short list...

Nov 4, 2019, 7:32 AM

By no means do I consider myself an expert in the College Football world. However, here is a short list of coaching candidates that I would consider if I was the AD at Florida State.

1. Urban Meyer - Although a long shot to come back to the Sunshine State, he would be #1 on my board to bring back the glory days of FSU. Urban will return to coaching eventually but my guess it will be to take over the Southern Cal job or the Notre Dame job.

2. Kyle Wittingham - He has done a great job at Utah. Has he gone as far as he can go with the Utes? Bring him to the hot bed of college recruiting and watch him resurrect the FSU program.

3, Mark Dantonio - Lets get him out of Michigan State. He is a good coach that will always be the red headed step child to Ohio State and Michigan. Look for South Carolina to make a push for Dantonio when they fire Muschamp December 1st.

4. Brent Venables - The hottest coordinator in College Football. I don't think he leaves Clemson until his kids graduate but you never know and he deserves a shot at being the Head Ball Coach.

5. PJ Fleck - Young and talented. He connects with the high school kids and he is the future of coaching. FSU would be taking a chance on Fleck, but there is a school in Clemson, SC that took a chance and look how that worked out.

6. Gary Patterson - He has been consistently good at TCU. Yes they are having a down year this year, but as history shows, he is a good coach. FSU may want to go younger, but Patterson can stop the bleeding.

What say you???

Tommy Bowden?

Nov 4, 2019, 7:39 AM

The Bowden family has ties to FSU. :)

Would FSU want to re-kindle those flames?

Would Tommy want to follow in his dads legacy there?

A good list, but I don't see Meyer coming on board. He would want a program with a proven record for sure, but I don't know if he is willing,health-wise, to take on a train wreck.
Wittingham would be good, and so would Dantonio, but I suspect the coots will try to get him if he is available.

Coots? Are you assuming they are not going to keep him after such a great season?

1 - Won't Happen. Urban doesn't want a "challenge".

2 - Interesting, likely a Utah lifer now (been there since 1994) and I don't see him leaving SLC for tally.

3 - Again, would be interesting but 12 year into his tenure at MSU does he want to rebuild.

4 - Timing is wrong but I think BV IF leaves, it will be for a walk-in type of position, not a re-builder.

5 - This is nearly the right hire.... but he is a Northern Plains guy. Not sure if he would be able to recruit in the Gulf. Spent 1 season in Tampa so it isn't like he wouldn't know.

6 - I think he is a lifer looking at a legacy at TCU.

----

Some you didn't consider - Bronco Mendenhall or Dave Clawson. Interesting if FSU could swipe either away. Long shot but what could they do with better talent?

Charles Kelly - Interesting that his name has not come up being a FSU guy but I don't know his history there. Pair him with a good OC and he should win a lot of games.

I think the most likely candidate will be an offensive NFL type. Ironically, what would Kliff Kingsbury be able to do at Tally. You know, pair him with an actual defense.

I said the same about Dave Clawson, but that would also apply to Bronco Mendenhall.

James Franklin was on their short list 2 years ago. Guessing he makes it back on the list again.

That would be a big step down

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU will be similar to Tennessee...

Nov 4, 2019, 8:18 AM

in that the AD will have to deal with a bunch of influential alumni and boosters which is how they ended-up with Taggart in the first place.

Either Freeze, Bobby Petrino, or Lane Kiffin.

Tony Elliot

Venables doesn't want to be a head coach, Elliot does, I expect him to probably leave soon and FSU seems like a great job for him.

FSU job

Nov 4, 2019, 9:05 AM

Radio in Tampa this a.m. said fleck, norvell (sp. ? Memphis coach), venables. I’m sure they don’t know better than anyone else though.

I've seen alot of Mark Stoops talk...

Nov 4, 2019, 9:28 AM

since he was the DC there for a few years. It would be an interesting hire but I think he'd do well there. Kentucky has gotten quite a bit better and certainly from a personnel standpoint in his 6-7 years there, however, they really aren't very good offensively and are average for the most part, despite playing in a ho-hum SEC East.

ESPN U radio said that the coach they should go after is Tony Elliott and possibly Jeff Scott. Danny Kannel said he’d be all for that hire. Should be interesting

Re: FSU short list...

Nov 4, 2019, 11:32 AM

With the exception of #5, none of these are legit candidates.

I wouldn't touch Myer with a 10 foot poll. Unreliable. You want to clean the culture up at FSU, he isn't the guy to do it. He left Florida with a mess.

Patterson and Dantonio aren't going anywhere. Dantonio is 64 years old! Patterson 59. Patterson's name is mentioned every year and he doesn't go anywhere.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mark Dantonio is 63 and seems to be over the hill now

Nov 4, 2019, 11:45 AM

He has basically refused to change anything at MSU despite their offense being horrendous for several years now. His big offensive shakeup this past offseason was to keep his entire offensive staff, but to give them all new roles. OL coach went to TEs, TE coach went to OL, etc. No actual new staff members, no new ideas, no change to the offensive philosophy what so ever. Shockingly, it hasn't worked!

I like the rest of those guys although i don't think Urban will take the FSU job, and i don't really think Venables or Patterson would leave their current roles. Patterson seems like a TCU lifer at this point.

Wittingham doesn't run an exciting offense, but he's a hard-nosed coach that will have FSU playing tough, physical football. He always fields really good defenses relative to what he can recruit at Utah.

Fleck is kind of obnoxious, but you can't really argue with his results at WMU and Minnesota.

I think Matt Campbell and Matt Rhule are both pretty good younger coaches as well. Rhule walked into a pretty terrible situation at Baylor and has done a very, very good job. He was good at Temple prior to that as well.

If South Carolina didn't make a serious run at Dantonio 4 years ago when he was coming off of 3 straight top 10 seasons, then why would they go after him now when he's a combined 24-22 over the past 4 years and 63 years old?

Because U5C was convinced 4 years ago they had a legitimate shot at Kirby Smart or Lincoln Riley. We all know they did not and had to settle.

Unfortunately for FSU fans or maybe it could be considered a blessing in disguise for some, the boosters will have as much say in the new Head Coach as the AD. The boosters are the ones who paid the buy out to fire Willie.
