FSU figured out something regarding short yardage..

Sep 26, 2014, 5:58 PM

It's easier to score when the defense only has 9 on the field. Talk about amateur hour.

Why are they lined up in the shot-gun with 1st and goal? I thought that was forbidden, at least here it is. I guess it's only dumb when it doesn't work.

It is more effective against 9 players***

Shotgun on 1st and goal is a lot different than 4th and one.

Since they're in the shotgun it is like an SAT word problem

Sep 26, 2014, 6:39 PM

Team A has First and Goal from the 1 but is in the shotgun and snapping the ball back 5 yards.

Team B has only 9 of 11 players on the field.

Answer the following question:

Who gets blamed more:
Team A Offensive coordinator
Team B Defensive coordinator
Both Head Coaches
All of the above
Only the team that failed on the play

I don't think it is too late to send this to Dabo

Holy crap! Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned til now as far as I know. Even went to the youtube replay and counted defenders. Yep, only 9. Ready to throw-up all over again. Just, holy crap!

Is only 9 on the field not a penalty?

Sep 26, 2014, 9:58 PM

I could swear I've seen flags before for only 10 men on the field. I guess they know when you put only 9 out there you've conceded the play. I guess maybe it could just be declined anyway.

GO TIGERS!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope

Sep 26, 2014, 10:06 PM

The penalty for "not enough men on the line of scrimmage" used to come up when you only had 10 on offense every now and then because the missing person was a linemen or would've lined up on the line of scrimmage.

But, the NCAA changed their rule to more closely resemble the NFL rule (and also to actually enforce what they were trying to enforce). The intent of the penalty was to penalize formations where too many men were not on the LOS, but the penalty (as it was before the change) used to penalize situations where this was not the case. So, they changed the rule a few years back to where you can't have more than 4 players lined up off the LOS.

But, this is basically irrelevant to this play as it does not apply t defensive formations.

TLDR: There is no penalty for choosing to play with less than 11 players. The penalty that used to occur has been changed, but never applied to defense anyway.

Players are focused on their individual assignments, it's the coaches job to see the entire field.

Re: Nope

Yep players are told when to go out. They aren't in charge of when they take the field. This is on the position coaches.
