I'm not going to blast the kid but did his leg have something to do with him maxing out 225 on the bench press.

year, I'd say this kid must be highly underrated. I can't see Venebles allowing a "favor" on his defense.

He committed before Venables got here.

I think a lot of the 2 star ratings are a placeholder until

the services can evaluate a guy. It's very very possible that no one has gotten a look at this kid and we snuck him in the back door. He's at least a 3 star and would've had several offers if he hadn't committed so early.

Bench means nothing once you put the pads on.

I beg to differ. It means a lot when a 300 plus pound lineman gets to the second level and you get manhandled because you're weak. He definitely needs to get stronger.

Our OL has been benching massive weights forever...

and it hasn't helped us in short yardage. Besides, this kid is only a high school junior, his bench press will improve.

It just makes me mad that I had a buddy try to walk on a couple of years ago with way better numbers than this kid, and this was when we were really hurting at linebacker and needed bodies (before the Steward/Anthony/Townsend/Goodson class).

where did he play ? What do you mean tried to walk on?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Come on DJ prove these ###### wrong***

Jul 2, 2012, 10:07 AM

Clemson holds open tryouts for walk-ons every fall right before school starts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hahaha

Jul 1, 2012, 6:12 PM

If strength was everything in sports wouldnt you see worlds strongest men in the nfl, mma? And ill take a kind who can power clean 275 over a kid who benches 315 every day at any position.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Hahaha

Jul 2, 2012, 9:09 AM

If he can power clean 275 I'll feel way better about him, but it's pretty rare to see someone power clean 50 pounds more than they bench.

He may be a sleeper pick and do very well, and I hope that's the case, but he's the recruit I have the most questions about right now.

Re: Front Page Story: Greenlee enjoys Clemson camp, working to get better

Jul 1, 2012, 10:25 PM

I used to work out 6 days a week. I am 37 years old now and was begged to play football by the head coach in high school. I never took him up on his offer. I was fast. I ran the 40 in about 4.5. I weighed 155 lbs. and could bench press 275 lbs as a 15 year old, and as a senior I weighed 168 and could bench 305. He wanted me to be a WR or a LB. I have went on to do my heaviest presses at 195 lbs pressing 355. LOL, he told me he could add 15 lbs to me in my legs and butt. The thing is, I never did the football type workouts including power cleans and never had strong legs. Back in the day I would have put myself up against even the biggest football player as there was probably only 3 players in the entire school who could out lift me.....in bench. It was the other lifts that could have made me a pretty lethal LB in high school.

The point of my story is this. There is a whole lot more to it than bench press. I have now had 2 back surgeries and have been back in the gym for 2 months. I believe if I had to do it I could do 225-250 again. I just would not subject myself/back to that kind of weight anymore. I would love if Greenlee's max was around at least 250. I guess that wouldn't bee too bad for him coming in to his senior year. I do believe there is more to a football player that bench pressing. He may have a good squat and power clean. We will see.

Re: Front Page Story: Greenlee enjoys Clemson camp, working to get better

Jul 2, 2012, 9:15 AM

squat is listed at 300, also not impressive. His power clean isn't listed.

I will say that some kids play a lot stronger than they lift. One of the strongest kids at my high school couldn't bench 200 pounds but he could beat 300 pound bench pressers in arm wrestling, etc. I hope he's one of those kids but I have my doubts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's the son of a DIV I S&C coach. Thats what concerns me.

Jul 2, 2012, 9:33 AM

He's probably already overachieving in his strength and playing. It would be like like signing Coach Morris's son as a QB if he were 5'10"....ran a 5.0 40 AND couldnt throw a fade. See what I mean? It's not a slam against Greenlee. Not sure why everyone on here gets all butt hurt about honest criticisms. What makes Greenlee's son any more deserving of a scholarship than any other faculty members son? Greenlee can afford to send his son to Clemson without using a scholarship(which we only get 85 of). If we are into charity and goodwill....lets go find another all region type performer who maybe cant afford the tuition. AGAIN....it's not a slam against the kid. But just as you would expect the son of a QB coach who plays QB in HS to at least have a great arm(even if hes shorter than a leprechaun and slower than molasses) you would expect the son of a strength and conditioning coach to at least be on the higher side of strong(if not a beast) even if he might be slower/smaller/whatever. Flame me if you want.....but this kid had an amazing resource at his disposal for his entire life. He actually had a father who could show him how to get bigger/stronger/faster. He either didnt use what was available to him....or he has already peaked. His leg may have been hurt....but he had no business running a 5.0+ second forty. A kid his size should easily be squatting 400 and benching 300(again....think about his resources). Maybe he'll becom a great coach someday....maybe a trainer....who knows. But he could have done at Clemson without using a scholly.

Re: He's the son of a DIV I S&C coach. Thats what concerns me.

Jul 2, 2012, 10:12 AM

I'm not sure how much you make as an asst. strength coach (probably not much). I'm still not 100% sure this kid deserves a scholarship, it seems a lot like the Jon Richt scholarship a few years ago to me.

I hope I'm wrong about him and he ends up being a Brian Urlacher or something, but until it happens I'm gonna be skeptical about taking a kid with those numbers in a recruiting class that is already hurting for numbers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He makes 63k a year...and his son wouldnt have to pay for

Jul 2, 2012, 10:20 AM

housing or a meal plan. He can send his son to Clemson even if he doesnt get a discount.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He makes 63k a year...and his son wouldnt have to pay for

Jul 2, 2012, 10:48 AM

Wow that's a lot more than I expected, I figured an asst. strength coach probably made like half of that.

Re: Front Page Story: Greenlee enjoys Clemson camp, working to get better

Jul 2, 2012, 2:48 AM

OK! I just watched his video. I don't really know what to say or think. I am not a recruiter. I am not an S&C coach. He looks slow compared to most guys. It is hard to put a finger on. He seems to be better at eluding blockers than he is knocking them over. He sheds blocks pretty well. I guess. I think if anything he will give depth. I really don't see him starting at LB. I hope he gets faster and stronger his senior year. I just think college guys would hurt him bad right now. Sorry if that upsets anyone. Did he really compare himself to Branch?

Re: Front Page Story: Greenlee enjoys Clemson camp, working to get better

Jul 2, 2012, 4:59 AM

Smart player takes good angles. Not very athletic tho. Greenlee is a few steps slower and doesn't appear to have that explosion needed to drive through ball carriers. Look at boulwares highlights and you'll see raw explosive power. Greenlee will contribute on St I bet. He is football smart and made great veteran decisions in those high lights.

null

After watching his videos...

Jul 7, 2012, 8:36 PM

I think he has potential to contribute. He looks like after a redshirt and and a couple more years in the system he may be solid. He should be solid on special teams. I think his redshirt jr year he will compete and could surprise some people.
