that job, it seems. That was only part of it, I'll bet. They are at 11-1, the one loss being the #4 team, yet hoping for some weirdness this saturday to get them into the playoff. If they play for the ACC championship and win, they could well be in. They played for it last year and got in, even losing the game. But ND, being ND, won't do it. So, they are archaic on two counts, and Kelly said, "I've had enough."
I don't think this will work out well for either him or LSU, but he'll be a wealthy man.

Notre Dame was the college football mecca. I bet the generation before us would never believe that someone would voluntarily leave ND for another college job.

Up until probably the last 10 years, ND has been considered one of THE jobs in college football. Maybe it still is, I dunno.

as you say, remembering the history of college football from my youth. ND's historical success created the delusion it was continuing that success during the BCS period but the playoff has changed ND's position as an indy.
I think ND's refusal to join a conference and have a more certain path to the playoff limits a coaches opportunity to win a national championship. I also think while being the premier Catholic university the independent status is also limiting ND's ability to recruit.
The SEC has an advantage in both.

At the title, or it's just simply about the money, this is a head scratcher. He was already hitting legendary status at ND and could squeeze into the playoffs much easier due to ND's BS status even without a conference championship.
The problem with LSU, of course, is they're going to demand that he match Saban almost immediately and that's always a big ask.

He is already a legend at ND without the Championship

so he can leave a legend, get a big contract, have two decent years and get bought out by LSU with a sweet retirement lump sum payment when he loses to Saban two years in a row.
9-3 at LSU is good, but it aint gonna cut it. It is a great retirement plan for him though.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I get that. But he may just be another guy collecting that money while unemployed. But hey, if he's good with that, that's winning at the bank.

more mercenaries than coaches. I count us as really lucky with Dabo. I've always felt that he was a guy that really didn't work anywhere else, so more than likely he's with us to the end. Clemson/Dabo just happens to be a perfect storm: large (enough) passionate fanbase that plays around the SEC instead of in the SEC, a Power 5 conference that can be dominated on a recurring basis, fertile recruiting ground, enough branding to be competitive on the national stage, and most importantly...an administration and fanbase that is accepting of his philosophy. I think there was a worry at one time with him jumping to Bama once Saban was gone, but I really don't see that happening now with EITHER party at this point. We'll still have to pay him, but I'm not sure at this point we have to worry about making him the highest-paid coach in the nation to keep him.

Coaching at college and even at the high school level has become a migrant job.
Staying for one year and jumping at any job that moves you up the rung of the ladder has become extremely common. Especially at the assistant level. But now these assistants are moving into HC levels and still have the same mindset. Instead of staying somewhere and trying to build something like Dabo, they take their moderate immediate success and leverage it into a bigger job.
And let me tell you, coaching has become a job very few want to do.

I think to Dabo, being the king and the best there's ever been at a location is more important than the money. So that works well for us.

He was making more in the 7-8 million dollar range. ND is a private school and did not have to disclose his true salary.

The fact that he's going into a football crazy environment where he can win a natty is just the icing on the cake. But for 15M and a good buyout he'd go anywhere.

He is too old imo for that hire. I believe he knows what he is doing of course, but it's just a 5 year hire maybe? Lincoln Riley is 38, USC killed it.

I think Kelly is going to kill it at LSU. He’s very Saban-like, runs a disciplined program. After Les and Orgeron, I think he’ll help their culture a ton. Recruits well, has done more with less at ND for a decade.
