Status of the ACC

Nov 26, 2012, 2:27 PM

Clearly, the ACC is not just down this year - it sucks. But - there have been years in the not too distant past where the ACC was better - Clemson, Florida State, Va Tech, NC State, Miami, Georgia Tech, and even BC and Wake Forest have been up there, with UNC and Virginia lurking around the fringe. So the ACC is not - in general - lousy football conference. But they certainly have been the last couple of years. And this while the SEC has arguably peaked. If nothing else, the SEC has been more consistent with 2-3 upper tier teams, 2-3 that are on the cusp of that, and only maybe 2 bottom dwellers.

So - my question is this: I know there are a lot of Swofford and ACC haters on here. Y'all can sit this one out. My concern is Is the ACC headed irreversibly downhill or is this just a slump that any and all conferences have from time to time? Is the ACC really de-emphasizing football - which would be suicidal?? I would love to have the level of competition that the SEC has, but the SEC has not always been this dominant or popular. How much of a role does the actual conference management/organization play vs the individual schools and their coaching, recruiting, execution on the field, etc?

The ACC has had some good years and there is good potential here, but I do think that the breaking point is near that if something is not done (and I have no idea what that would be) that the conference will fall apart and we'll be looking for whatever ship will take us.

I honestly think Swofford has decided to cut his losses

in football and is collecting basketball schools. Pitt, Syracuse, UConn, Louisville... He hasn't done anything in 8 years other than renegotiate with the Orange Bowl post-'14 to make me think he cares about football anymore.

The ACC SHOULD NOT be this bad in football with us, GT, VT, FSU, and Miami but I don't think the powers that be are committed to the sport anymore.

Assuming that's true - in a business sense, why

would you neglect a sport that brings in so much more than basketball? I'm just trying to make business or other sense of it. Football is obviously where the money is. Basketball is nice, but it's not nearly the same revenue - either in TV, ticket sales, merchandise, etc.

And look at the SEC - they've got good basketball as well. I guess I'm wondering what a conference administration can do that can pull things one way or another - it seems like ultimately it's up to the schools and where they put their money and resources and the decisions they make. They're all committed to football in that they all have a team, stadium, etc - why not try to do your best at it? I don't think any school is half-assing it but is there anything the ACC can do to affect that one way or another?

The real heath of the two conferences can be told in one quick trip to stub hub. Look what tickets are going for to each game! There are tickets for the ACCCG going for $3.50! It's not even close how much being in that type of conference benefits a Athletic dept in whole.

ACC is 3-13 in BCS Bowls, this is not a recent problem***

FRANK HOWARD complained about the ACC being weak...

it has just taken on a more formal status now that the UNC Athletic Director is running things. And now that SC has found itself in a football conference that has tremendous leadership, with lots of money, we are now seeing the practical consequences of the difference.
