Painting/Decorating the Halls/Dorms in Johnstone in late 80s

Apr 2, 2021, 10:16 AM

I remember in the 87-88 year, maybe 88-89 also, I lived on F4 and some of us decided to give our rooms nicknames and paint something relevant to the nickname on our door. I can't remember if we were the ones who started it (probably not) but I do remember that eventually almost every hall and/or dorm door in Johnstone was painted. I think it actually became an official contest of some sort. There were some halls that were made to look like dungeons, with torches and large stones painted on the walls. Other dorm doors had album covers on them or even on the walls. Some of the kids who painted these were really good! I guess they were letting us do that because a lot of Johnstone was being torn down in the coming years, so they figured why not. Who knows.

I was in AFROTC, so our room was The Hangar and I had painted an F-15 on the door. We had a couple druggies and their room was The Joint. We had two Indian kids who didn't participate, so we did it for them and called their room The Oasis (would get in trouble for that today for racism, probably). Those are the only ones I remember.

Anybody else's hall participate in that, or you individually? TAPS even put pictures of several of them in the yearbook that year. Fun times.

That is so cool!!! My last year in Johnstone was 1983, so I hate I missed out on that.
Thanks for sharing. Any pictures?

Those are all great. Thank you for posting those. I never knew this happened in Johnstone.

Yeah, I think it was right before some sections were torn down. Was lots of fun. Very cool!

The "cool" deal when I was there in the mid-70s was to hang

Apr 2, 2021, 11:21 AM

a parachute from the center of the ceiling, attached to the walls just below roof level. It gave the lights a psychedelic look. Also, had to stagger the bunk beds, upper one on concrete blocks sitting on the room "ledge", with a desk beneath, and the lower one stretched across to the other side of the room. There were some truly cool and innovative arrangements thought up by these 18-22 year old brains.

I also remember, the rule at the time was that if you had a guest of the female persuasion in your room, the door had to remain open at least a trash cans worth. There were also some truly innovative squashed BEYOND completely flat trash cans. :)

I loved building the lofts. I saw some really cool ones when I was there. Sometime during my years there - late - they made you start actually having building permits and they had someone going around inspecting the lofts. Had to have a fire extinguisher, too! I don't know if there had been an incident of if the university's liability lawyers just wanted to be proactive, but that kinda took the fun out of it. Always enjoyed going down to Ol' Norm's at the beginning of the semester and cramming my car full of whatever lumber and bolts I needed. We'd do all the cutting and construction right there in the hall! Carpets were covered with sawdust!

No decorating on B5 during 87-88-89. Unless ######## randomly busting all the lights out on the hall is considered decorating.
