Of all the teams I think about, that might challenge us next year and beyond, its Bama and then everyone else. They are the biggest threat until someone eliminates them as a threat. Therefore they are my focus.
Its is true that our beatdown last year took some luster off their "biggest bully" image. They may be slipping. Certainly Sabin looked old, tired, and lost in that game. His players played scared also. Its possible someone like UGA could step up and take their place; or maybe OU could learn how to play defense; or Ohio State could leverage their talent for a change. But until that is proven, Alabama is is my #1. #1 threat to the pending Clemson dynasty.

Oklahoma's defense will not let them be a real threat outside of the big 12. O310 has a first year coach and a first year QB who hasn't played a full season since his junior year of high school who looked awful in the spring game for what it's worth.. I wouldn't agree yet bamas headed down as they just pulled another #1 recruiting class last year, but if they're headed down then there's a massive separation between us and the others.

Bama is still #1 in excuses. Their total number of excuses to date (and I'm sure the list will grow) will be hard for any team to ever over take.

Bama is number one in excuses?? They are still recruiting the top HS players in the country. Saban is a great coach, and they are a great program. In spite of all the hype, I think that we'll have a big drop-off defensively this coming season. We could very easily lose two games during the regular season.

Tigerman1978 Thanks for posting this! I agree with you 100%. One would have to be a stone cold fool to believe BV will just put any old defense on the football field. Or one would have to be an undercover Chickens fan. Either way: "it isn't happening"! BV knows he is compensated like a guy who is expected to produce top 10 defenses and he does that every other year despite having to replace a number of starters!
The bulk of the secondary is back! Isiah Simmons is back(will be a 1st round draft pick just off his measurable s alone). 4 full time starters back leaves 7 positions.
Let's see:
DE: Xavier Thomas played starter minutes - 5 star talent.
DE: KJ Henry/Justin Mascol - 5 star talent.
DT: Nyles Pinckney - played starter minutes at critical times in all games. Will be draft pick.
DT: Jordan Williams: 5 star DE but moved inside as he is now 315 lbs. But, still has DE speed.
CB: DK - absolute beast who by all accounts looks like an NFL caliber S.Dwn CB "now"! SCARY. 5 star A. Booth to back him up. 4 Star M. Goodrich to back up him and K. Mcmichael on other corner.4*
LB: I am really looking forward to seeing Skalski/Mike Jones Jr(4*) compete.
LB: My dark horse: Vonta Bentley is going to be a beast! But, Shaq Smith 5 star leader will start.
You are replacing positions with guys who are not just Okay players. You are replacing last year defense with guys who "have an opportunity, I said: opportunity" to be just as good as the player they will be replacing!

Top to bottom Bama's roster is superior but they'll likely continue to struggle against us because they can't match our difference makers on O or D; are hindered by scheme & staff turnover.?(the annual staff exodus should have had a greater impact on Bama's recruiting, more than it has shown)

Remember: bama offers 330 some odd players. Clemson offers less than 200. By simple math; they will get more big fish players. But, are they all the type you want on campus? Are all of them really 5 star players?
And, you almost sound like you are making an excuse for Alabama. Not the superior squad Alabama Crimson Tide? They don't need excuses. Coaching turnover b/c Nick Saban is imploding and becoming more and more unbearable to work with! It will only get worse; as coaches all across the country have seen their colleagues "have fun on the job and have a work/family balance and still kick old Nick's arsenic!
Why would they put up with it?
They were put back on the college football map by Nick Saban; and he will lead to them being taken off it again with his antics! He tried to ease up; but just doesn't know how! It is showing. Why did he feel the need to change in the 1st place is the question you and all other apologist need to ask though.

No doubt a program as dominant as Clemson like Alabama has been ( same record last 4 years same # of championships) has to be considered the favorite to knock us off! No arguing there! And, I know why you say that NCTiger75®. Fear of "complacency"!
For as long as Alabama is the big bad older brother of college football we will always be the underdog and "keep that edge"!
That may not have been your angle - but I have seen many express concern over getting "to ahead of ourselves"!
The thing is - this coaching staff has not shown me anything that let's me believe for a second they would ever get complacent! They judge and evaluate everything from; how early/late kids are to practice/film sesions. How guys finish reps in the weight room and on the field. Heck, the competition just to get on the field right now will be so fierce come August, "that the guys who make it out as starters will be something awesome to see"! Competitive competition and not - "the team needs my size/strength/speed/height/skills/etc so I can afford to take a rep off! A player can't afford not to pay attention during film study or lifting either! Why? Because the next guy up is just as good and just as deserving to be a starter! The details will be the deciding factor!
Think about how this environment will help a young man when/if they go to the NFL where people are fighting for "JOBS"! Paychecks! Knowing that nothing will be handed to you and that; the moment I stop producing on the field; "they will try the next guy"! All that serves to keep Clemson as hungry as we have ever been!
Clemson isn't going anywhere.
Alabama isn't going anywhere.
O31O st. isn't going - well that remains to be seen! Talent. But, Urban Meyer is a beast of a coach.
Oklahoma if they start playing defense will be something fierce. Lincoln Riley is a QB whisperer and now has a DT QB that defenses must worry about taking off. The thing with them is; when will the run of spectacular "transfer QB's end"? It's not like they have been getting these guys as FR and developing them. Some might call it luck! Jury is out on them in my opinion.
Notre Dame - Brian Kelly has a many excuses as SEC fans! No integrity and no new offensive concepts since his days as Cincinatti Bearcats HC.
Meat Chicken(Michigan) - has Don Brown and Harbaugh and now one of Alabama's co-OC who helped Tua become the QB he is now! I think these dudes may be in the running as well.
