Foster Runs All-Time Mark at Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - (release) Nicolee Foster became the No. 9 performer in program history for the women’s 400-meter hurdles following her time of 57.73 seconds during the opening night of competition on Friday at the Florida Relays. Foster, who entered the meet with a personal best of 58.86 from her career at Central Arizona, is the sixth member of the Clemson track and field program to record a top-10 all-time mark through the Tigers’ opening three meets of the season.
“Nicolee’s performance tonight was awesome,” reflected Mark Elliott, Clemson’s Director of Track & Field. “That was the Nicolee that we've always known was there. For her to get 57 this early in the season, it shows that she’s working towards better things in the future.”
The men’s 200m saw Terryon Conwell shine in his debut in the event outdoors for Clemson. Conwell stopped the clock in Gainesville at 20.54, signaling a lifetime best and a time that proved to be good enough for third overall in Friday's competition. Marcus Parker joined Conwell in finding success in the event this evening, as Parker ran 20.70 to set a season’s best. Alex Sands lowered his season’s best in the event by a sizable margin during tonight's third heat, crossing the line in 21.48.
When reflecting on Conwell’s strong opener at 200m this evening, Elliott added, “Terryon has shown us each week, during the indoor and outdoor seasons, that he’s continuing to get better.”
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Rayan Holmes earned a new personal best in the event after crossing the line in 52.07. Holmes carried a best of 52.49 into the meet from his time representing South Plains CC back in 2017. Jevon Williams made his collegiate debut in the event alongside Holmes during Friday's second heat, running 56.53.
In the women’s 1,500m, Riley Coggin ran sub-4:40 for the first time in her career, crossing the line with a time of 4:39.30. Coggin was one of four Tigers to earn a personal best in the event, as she was joined by Josie Wirtz (4:40.70), Meredith Finley (4:42.58), and Grace Hanratty (4:56.17). In the men’s edition of the metric mile, Michael Smith led the way with his time of 3:58.44 and was followed closely by freshman Jack McManus in 4:05.73.
Zico Campbell finished eighth in the men’s shot put competition this evening, showcasing his consistency in the event by going 17.35m (56-11.25) on his fourth attempt. Campbell has thrown further than 17.20m in each of the team’s opening three meets this outdoor season.
Kori Carter, Lakeisha Warner, and Olivia Cooney joined Foster in the women's 400m hurdles this evening, with Cooney’s time of 1:02.99 making Florida Relays the third consecutive meet in which she has set a personal best in the event. Courtney Williams had a strong showing in the women’s 200m, leading the women’s contingent with her final time of 24.33. Zeniyah Lawrence earned an outdoor season's best in the event thanks to her result of 24.62.
Veronica Fraley got the day started for the Tigers by finishing ninth in the discus competition thanks to her toss of 49.66m (162-11.25). Fraley’s mark came on her fourth attempt. In the women’s long jump, Caroline Johnston competed in the event outdoors for the first time as a Tiger, leaping to a mark of 5.43m (17-9.75) this evening in Gainesville.
Clemson will return to action on Saturday at 10 a.m. as Roje Stona contests the men’s discus. Action on the track is set to get underway at noon with the prelims of the women’s 100m hurdles.
