Force Notre Dame into conference football

Oct 10, 2018, 4:23 PM

When is the next negotiation? Notre Dame benefits in other sports by being in the ACC. They need to finally commit in football. I know their history with PAC 12 and Big 10 schools but if they commit it is the catalyst the ACC needs to compete with the SEC as a powerhouse. It will still take time but the entire conference will get stronger quicker once they commit. We have a good nucleus of coaches. At this point a valued member is actually a detrement due to their decision.

Well the Pac 12 may not exist soon so maybe revenues go up for the "power 4" and the thought of joining us grows exponentially.

If they finish the year similar to most other teams this year and fail to get in, they may start thinking otherwise. Atheir only drawback is a lack of conference championship game. A CG is basically a guaranteed matchup with another ranked team.

Since we are an 8-game conference, they could still play Stanford, USC, and rotate B1G schools. Then they would actually stand the best odds of getting in without a CC, ironically.

Why should they commit when they have their "own" television contract, are not locked into a conference schedule, and still be a factor in the CFP as long as they are winning. If they go undefeated this season, do you honestly think they would be left out of the conversation?
Oh, and why do you think they chose to play a somewhat less powerful conference than the SEC?
Ask yourself would you rather face Syracuse, or UNC or an Auburn or LSU?
Besides in the past, they have played the likes of both Miami and Pittsburg so it made more sense
to play a part-time ACC schedule.
Oh, and they could care less about the conference. It has always been about Notre Dame, first and foremost, and the NCAA doesn't have the power or the clout to "force" them do what they don't want to do.

The power is ND getting left out. Undefeated Clemson w a conference championship win wil make it to the playoffs every time over an undefeated ND no matter how crappy the ACC is. Only that will force their hand to join a conference and hopefully the ACC. We could use them as we can’t count on our SEC teams we play being ranked especially SC which has done nothing for our schedule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

depending on the situation they absolutely get left out...

Oct 11, 2018, 4:46 PM [ in reply to Re: Force Notre Dame into conference football ]

Ohio state undefeated Conference champ goes
Clemson undefeated conference champ goes
Bama undefeated conference champ goes
& UGA only loss to bama in conference champ game goes (or vice versa w/ bama) b/c they're not leaving out the SEC runner up if they went undefeated in regular season.

ND gets left out.

that being said all those things aren't likely to happen so assuming ND goes undefeated they're likely to get in.........as is any team in power 5 conference that goes undefeated.

Oct 11, 2018, 5:18 PM [ in reply to Re: Force Notre Dame into conference football ]

I believe I have the solution:

UCF and TCU sue ND and the CFP/NCAA under the guise that for other sports which generate revenue for schools ND is subject to the championship qualifier of their conference, but are given and unfair advantage which directly affects both p5 and non p5 schools from achieving that revenue generating capability based on their current special classification. This should eliminate all independents from qualifying for the CFP.

Just make it known to ND that winning a conference

Oct 10, 2018, 5:04 PM

championship carries extra weight in the selection of the 4 teams to the play-offs. If Clemson, Alabama and OhioSt win their conference championship game and remain undefeated, they'll each have 13 wins to Notre Dame's 12 wins (assuming they also remain undefeated). But it also could put a team like West Virginia in an unusual position should they win their conference championship game because they had a game with NCSt cancelled due to a hurricane and would only be 12-0 BUT with a conference championship game under their belt

Notre Dame is the one school, IMO, that can rely on tradition, and reputation to state their case.
Not saying they would get in, but arguing against their case would be like taking on Perry Mason.

It's only going to happen when it hurts.

Oct 10, 2018, 6:48 PM

When they're undefeated and don't make the playoffs due to not playing a conference championship game, than they'll consider it.

As long as Notre Dame can command the type of money they make off of "THEIR" television contract, it won't even be a discussion.

Re: It's only going to happen when it hurts.

Oct 10, 2018, 11:27 PM

Agree. They have no financial incentive, no Prestige incentive, the only incentive I can think of is altruistic, "do it for your conference". There are several people much smarter than I who work within the ACC that must be able to create some kind of monetary or contractual contingent to underhadedly wrangle them into it.

& will that happen, most press sez no***

1: they call the shots with TV deals and such
2: they will beg no one to join a conference
3: should they decide its time to join one, wouldnt they consider the B1G comsiderong their history with that conferences teams, the tie with the pac-12 (rose bowl), the fact that they are litterally surrounded by other B1G campuses, and the fact that there is a lot more $$$$ available in the B1G?

Just a thought and my 0.02. Don’t really care.

Oct 10, 2018, 7:45 PM

join a conference in football, it must be the ACC. Also consider, the NCAA doesn't really control the CFP. The CFP should just grow some balls and say, you must at least play in a CCG, to be eligible for the CFP, avoiding situations like Bama last year, getting an extra week off to prepare and get over their injuries.

I think you should have to win a conference to be eligible.

No reason to force ND into ACC

Oct 11, 2018, 6:52 AM

We get the benefit of a naturally scheduled game with ND. I am looking forward to going to South Bend in a couple of years and the trip they made to Death Valley was epic.

Notre Dame being half way in the ACC has no impact on us. In fact, it probably helps us as we could always have the ACC Championship as a resume bullet when looking at playoffs and they can't.

I say let them do exactly what they are doing now...half way in the ACC in football.

It's impossible. Sounds like socialism or communism or uglyism or something.

Not going to happen. ND can't take the cut in pay.

Oct 11, 2018, 8:36 AM

They get to keep 100% of their post season earnings. If they ever make the Playoff they will get 1/6th of the total payout. If they make the final round they will end up with 1/3rd the total payout.

If that happens once in 20 years they will be ahead of where they would be had they been paying dues to a conference for 20 years and taking the shared payouts from the conference.

It's just economics. Clemson could do the same had we not signed away our rights. Right now we'd be looking for places to spend what the playoff pays out to all participating conferences.

Which brings me to my next lecture on economics. Last season the SEC took home 2/3rds of the total payout. That ought not to be.

Well we had an opportunity to get the ACC an extra 1/6 of the $$ and failed. Chris Stapleton has a popular song describing this scenario.

I hope none of you really think an undefeated Notre Dame would miss the playoffs. Regardless of talent or SOS, they are in based off of the name brand they have.

Just speaking of football terms, the ACC needs Notre Dame way more than Notre Dame needs the ACC. They can write their own checks and terms for that matter. It isnt right or fair, but neither is life. Id venture to say they are worth more than several ACC schools combined in most cases.

Again, I get tired of the annual preseason rankings. But it may be valid this year.

ND makes more money goin 0-12 than Clemson makes going to the Natty... their football contract is one of kind and they are not dumb people. I personally would love to have them in the ACC (along with UCF on the other side) but unless the ACC get creative, very creative its never going to happen.

hand in about 10 minutes. Have them in the top four, before the conference championship games, then bump them down to 5th on the final poll! Could you imagine the uproar from ND, and they couldn't do a thing about it! EXCEPT, join the ACC in football! Yep, that's my wish!

The college football shows are already counting them in. They get the advantage from always being known nationally. I also think that not playing in a conference championship game is not fair to the ones that do. Teams that do play that extra game is just more of taking a toll on their teams from a longer season as well as injuries that can occur while the teams that do not are resting up and are more fresh for the playoffs.
