For those being harangued by other fans speculating

that Coach Swinney will leave Clemson for a job at his alma mater:
Consider this.....
Coach Frank Howard took the reins in 1940.....SEVENTY-SEVEN YEARS AGO! During that time, EXACTLY ONE INDIVIDUAL who was Clemson head football coach left for another coaching job....ONE!! The country's gone through WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, 14 US Presidents, and the death of disco....the Cubs even won a World Series.
Sure, some ex-coaches have been dismissed.....one (thank goodness) left for an administrative position with another conference......but Clemson is a destination job--not a train depot along the way.
Personally, I'm enjoying Coach Swinney's time in McFadden and never even think about him being anywhere else.....and we have all summer to look at replays of the games from last year's National Championship season!! This will be one DT (dark time) that won't be so bad as our Tigers look down from the mountain top.
That is all....enjoy your day!

Think about it this way...

Coach Swinney is now cemented as a legend here in Clemson after building a powerhouse program and taking us to the top of the mountain. At Alabama, he will always be in the shadow of Bear Bryant and Nick Saban. He will always be compared to them even if he wins a Natty at Bama. At Clemson, he IS the man along with Coach Ford. Coach Swinney is taking the program to heights that even Coach Ford could only dream of. I truly believe that we are set for more championships in the near future. There is no good reason to leave Clemson to go to Bama, no upside for Dabo. He would be just another coach at Bama. At Clemson, he will always be appreciated for what he has done to rebuild a championship level program. Just my $.02.
Go Tigers!!!

People forget the years between the end of the Bryant era and the start of the Saban era. After he retired all subsequent Bama coaches were expected to be as good as or better than the Bear . That job comes with a built in hot seat. If Saban didn't at least get his team to the SEC Championship by his second season then his 3rd would most likely had been his last. Most of his predecessors had little room for failure. Expectations are extraordinarily high there.

Between Bear and Stallings Bama had two coaches,

Ray Perkins and Bill Curry both during 1980s. Was Danny ever considered by Bama? I don't remember. If not, he should have been.

Danny could have very easily gone back to Bama to retire. But instead he decided to retire around Clemson. Even after all that went on when he left. There's a reason that he didn't go back to Bama to retire and that reason is Clemson. There's something in those hill that makes them all come back to. Dabo has moved most of his family to the Clemson area. He has set his roots by the shores of lake Hartwell. Those roots run deep and it would take a major storm to uproot that tree. Go Tigers.

Preface: Finebaum asked Dabo if he'd return to Bama...

well over a year ago on the Finebaum show. THe following link is a review of that conversation in which Dabo spoke uninterrupted for just less than 15 minutes.
http://thespun.com/acc/clemson/dabo-swinney-tells-paul-finebaum-about-the-3-times-he-could-have-returned-to-coach-at-alabama
When Dabo's speech ended Finebaum said, 'I guess there's no reason to ask you if you'll go back to Bama.'
You see, Bama had broken Dabo's heart three times leaving him without a job for months on end. My granny used to say, 'A burnt hen stays away from the fire.'

The way I look at is I can't blame coach if he did leave for Bama, but i'd be pretty disappointed if he left on his own for any other job not named Alabama. As long as admin says supportive, I do think coach is here for the long term.

Swinney isn't going to leave Clemson

He's not going to follow anyone, he doesn't have to. He's too smart and accomplished to put himself in a "will he be as good as" scenario.

However, there is no question Alabama still holds a special spot in his heart, understandably so. I do not think he will leave, at least anytime soon.
There are things that could happen that may open the door for Dabo to leave but they are not money or prestige related. I think it would take a situation where a new university president or AD made life very challenging for him and the program. I personally don't think our current President gets enough credit for our football success but he is instrumental in my view.
There could come a time when Kathleen or some family situation arises that would make the move to Alabama a preference for Dabo.
As I stated, I don't think he will go anywhere anytime soon but if someone stays at a school long enough, as dynamic an environment as college sports are, it is not out of the question he would move on. Couple that with non-football issues and there is a chance he would go back to his roots.
I don't worry about these things. Let's enjoy this fantastic journey and golden age of Clemson football. If there comes a time when Dabo is lured to Bama, I'll wish him all the success he deserves.

Wilhelm was the baseball coach when I enrolled in CLEMSON in 1960. Eventually Leggett was hired after Bill retired. And that's been it until Lee arrived on the scene last year. That's almost seventy years with two coaches. Unbelievable in these days. I hope Monte lasts as long as the others.
Bottom line..... good coaches don't leave Orange heaven for greener pastures!
