For the love of the game

May 16, 2015, 5:13 AM

There was a 5'11" kid from Anderson, SC who loved baseball. He didn't have the height or the velocity, but he loved the game and was committed to getting better. Despite a very respectable 5-1 record with a 2.32 ERA, he wasn't recruited heavily out of high school. He followed his brother's footsteps to a jr college that offered him an opportunity to continue to play the game he loved. At Spartanburg Methodist JC he Finished 5-2 with a 1.64 ERA in a team-high 49.1 innings during the 2011. His JC performance opened a door to play with his brother at ETSU. After completing the year with his brother at ETSU, he was able to transfer to his home state's baseball powerhouse Clemson. He sat and learned during his transfer year. He was able to battle his way into a Sunday starter's role last season. This year he sat once again for the first half of the season as he recovered from an injury. And now...once again... he has battled his way back to the role of an ACC Sunday starter, and he gets the call against the #8 team in the country. Nothing but respect for this young man who looked like 100 other HS baseball players in SC, but who had the determination to make it to this big stage. So far this season he has a 2.06 ERA with 30 K's against 13 BB's, and he has only given up 29 hits in 39.1 innings. Hoping for a W for Jake and his family. Can't wait 'til game time.

“Clemson wasn’t that much better with Trevor Lawrence, if at all.”

Point for sharing the story! Who couldn't root for Jake!***

I admire you. I can tell by reading your post, you are very knowledgable about Clemson Baseball. You stay above all of the back forth regarding the fate of our coach and choose to focus on what we all should be focusing on, our team. Thanks for sharing this story, I enjoyed reading it. Thank you and Go Tigers!

no doubt all the kids have a story to tell, and that certainly is a great one.

would be nice to focus on things such as this instead of a possible conversation between a coach and an AD at the end of the season.

Every kid does have a story. We have some amazing young men. So thankful to see Jake get the W. 1 run on 4 hits over 6 innings and coach Leggett let him go 94 pitches.

Thanks ClemsonBaseballFan. You have been one of the few voices of reason throughout this season. Please continue to share your thoughts as the post season begins unfolding.
