The music of today is sung ( or talked ) by those with NO TALENT and bought and played by those with NO BRAINS !! Motown and beach was played by mostly African American artists that actually HAD TALENT ! Don't give me that recruit BS. I thought Clemson was supposed to be an institution of HIGHER learning so they should LEARN what REAL MUSIC sounds like !!

Yes it is, evidently you haven’t been in a locker room since the what 70s?. You want your players to be hyped up and ready to play the opponent, just like the fans cheering and screaming , not singing feel good songs about hanging out with friends. Just be glad they don’t play the unedited versions of songs. Some of y’all might spontaneously combust if you heard what I listened to in my HS locker room. I’m not a music snob, I listen to all genres and tolerate them all. I don’t complain about it. Ether get with the times or stay home bro.

Question about "Beach Music" ...

Jun 4, 2022, 6:47 PM

If the development along North and South Carolina beaches had occurred about ten years later than it did, would The Beatles, Rolling Stones, CCR, The Doors, and Janis Joplin be considered "Beach Music" today by the people who frequented those beaches during that era?

No.

Beach is not about the beach, but it can be.
It is a niche genre.
Look at any major genre and then try to define things like Rock or Jazz.

Beach Music Stands alone. Any who have a clue can tell you if this or that ~~
It is not just old music, but few make new these days.
Here is a recent tune (30 years) to help you --

"Beach Music" is not an original genre. It came from a

niche genre that already existed (pop R&B with a blues shuffle beat), that people who went to the Carolina beaches in the 1950s listened to. These people identified it with their beach trips, so they started calling it "beach music". The music was popular in all other parts of the country as well, but only in the Carolinas and immediately surrounding areas did it become known as "beach music"; everywhere else it remained pop R&B. Over time these Carolina beachgoers understandably developed a nostalgia for their special times at the beach, and commercially branded and grew their niche. "Beach Music" has been reinvented a few times over the decades since.

My point is, that if development along the Grand Strand had occurred a decade later, more so in the 1960s instead of the 50s, people would have associated all of those good times and memories with the Beatles, Stones, and The Supremes instead of The Drifters, The Dominoes, and Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs. And, I wonder how or if they would have been able to brand that music as their own and create a niche with it like they did the older R&B.

Good post to help others, but --- NO.
Reading crap on the internet is what it is.

Nostalgia and tunes of the day make memories but that is not what "BEACH" is about.
LBB mentioned some of the beat characteristics.

My favorite all time group is 'THE TAMS'. In the day we traveled to where ever they were including the coast. Many refer to them as "Beach", but they are not just that. Most of their tunes are not "Beach".

"Beach Music has been reinvented" may be where you hang your hat. That is not possible.

Well, my point is this: None of the songs that from the 50s

Jun 4, 2022, 8:24 PM

and early 60s that form the foundation of what is now know as "Beach Music", were written with the Carolina beaches in mind. They were part of a popular, already existing genre of music that had no association with Carolina beaches (or beaches in general, for the most part), other than kids there were listening to it just like they were in other parts of the country. It was not called "Beach Music" when it was written and recorded - the artists had no idea what that was, as it had not been invented yet. It was simply Black R&B Pop Music. Somewhere along the line, Carolina beachgoers started calling it "Beach Music", branded it, and started making music THEY called "Beach Music", based on the Black R&B Pop they had labeled as such.

I remember becoming aware of this when at Myrtle Beach, I met people from all over America in the 70s and 80s who would ask "Why do they call that Beach Music?". They were baffled because they had been listening to the same songs for years and never heard it called that. If I listened to Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart a lot when I was at Clemson, I don't get to rebrand that timeless classical music as "Clemson Music". Now, if I wanted to try and mimic their sound, and produce some classical sounding music of my own and market it and rebrand it as "Clemson Music", that would be fine if I could pull it off.

Good points but -- NO

You seem to believe BEACH is just older tunes by Black folks.
Beach knows no race or time. It is about the beat.

Here is a fat white guy - one of my favorites. Steve is not as talented as some but has the spirit.

Totally wrong. Wayyyyy off totally missing the point.

Jun 4, 2022, 11:17 PM

I did NOT say beach music is just older tunes by black folks. Never said that. Never thought or implied that.

The original music from the 1950s and early 60s that became the foundation for "Beach Music" was indeed almost all black pop R&B. The Dominoes, The Tams, Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs, The Drifters, etc. were all black. They made the first music that eventually became known as "Beach Music", they just didn't know it. All of the white artists that later intentionally made what they knew to be "Beach Music" stood on the shoulders of these black pop R&B artists.

I have never claimed or implied that "Beach Music" was about race, or that it was not eventually enjoyed and performed by people of all ages and races. People all over enjoy it now, It's a good thing.

Not as old as you but old enough to own all the Beach Tunes. Will share if any need those and Tmail.

As to "shagging" been doing that poorly since a child. It is the official SC dance. I love it.
Beer on the porch brings this tale to mind.

In Charlotte a small shag pub 'Grouchos' opened. Some of my best friends were there as teachers. They are the best of the best and were determined to help me and my Yank Bride.
To me 'Shag' is bouncing around at OD to great music with too much beer.
After decades, told I was doing it wrong. I learned as to the amazing steps and saw it in a new light. My friends were incredible. To me it seemed more mechanical and less fun.

Bride was all in and getting good. One night I had to go there to learn more as opposed to an "all comers" track meet at Providence Day. She realized I was miserable and cut me loose to go there.
