For anyone digging deep for the POTD, I recommend

May 3, 2022, 8:53 AM

A “post hole digger,” which are great for gardening, as I’m sure Tugaloo and others can attest to as well. I’ve found LBB’s congratulatory posts to reveal you dig just deep enough to plant a good seed.

You get can buy them on the line.

I’ve never been able to do it, mainly since I don’t usually start topics. However, I felt strong about this since I used to dig holes in my Grandpop’s garden over 30 years ago for the tomatoes. It was one of the things that made me stronger. I helped with other veggies but the tomatoes stick out because they were red and tasty on a sandwich w. Mayo and required real work.

I hope you gardeners have a good spring and I hope this summer our Football team puts it together.

Go Tigers!

truth.. in the upstate.. dealing with the compacted red clay

and crushed limestone.

i ALWAYS use post hole diggers to plant my garden.. I usually only plant spouts so i only need about a 6 inch hole that is about 6 inches deep. Hand shovel doesn't get it done.. A spade shovel creates a much bigger hole than i need.

Post hole the clay/limestone out. put it in a bucket.. mix it with some mushroom compost and the cheapest potting soil i can buy... fill in hole.

Your post reminded me of stuff

About 15 years ago I decided to triple the size of the small deck on the side of my house. Not having expensive high tech tools, I went old school and did a lot of manual labor including digging with post hole diggers 15 two foot holes some with rocks and roots. Then I set the 4x4 posts with concrete that I mixed up with a wheelbarrow and shovel and packed it in good with a spud bar while having them braced to keep them plumb.

After they set for a day or two, I proceeded with the decking which was the easy part compared to all the digging, mixing, and packing. I was in my 40s then; now that I've passed 60, all that would kill me and be a lot more expensive. But mom and dad used to work us hard in the yard, gardens, and shop. So if you're accustomed to it, hard work is not a problem until you get some age on you and it gets harder.

As for POTD, seems it's not really that big a deal. You can just say something sort of stupid like JK did supposedly in jest and if enough other posters find it humorous or true or both and point you up, then voila, you got POTD! Congrats JK.

I’m not your age yet, but that would kill me too now. I hope the deck has stood the test of time.

I used those post hole diggers 75-76 years ago to build barbed wire fences when my Dad was transitioning from row crops to livestock farming. I was the youngest of four boys and was getting ready to enter Clemson. He saw his labor source disappearing so switched to a less labor intensive operation. I built some really good muscles that have served me well through out my life.

Since moving into a retirement community I have to grow my tomatoes in a box container, This year I purchased plants that were advanced enough to already have a few blooms. I now have several little tomatoes that are about an inch in diameter. I will beat my annual goal of having ripe tomatoes for my July 4th birthday. Wonder bread,Dukes mayo, and tomato sandwich coming up.

I grew up on Hellman’s but wouldn’t complain with Duke’s. Gardening is a skill and art they should teach in school- I would’ve loved it!

Glad to hear you’re enjoying your own tomatoes, TK!

Don't know why name came up.
I am very good at killing plants, growing them -- not so much.

There is a reason why folks plow.
Put a plant in a 6" hole of compacted soil or clay and it will tend to grow root bound like you see with store bought plants. It will have to struggle to break through to send out roots to gather water and nutrients. It may accomplish that, but will do better if put it in soil that has been broken up.

Here is a good tool:

I just pay others to dig my holes & plant my seeds

May 4, 2022, 8:23 AM

Then I just pay for what I want because we have created a farmers market.

We do a lot of trade outs for cash, crops or lessons!

Probably won’t ever get potd though, it’s value is above my pay grade, please take that with;
