So I'm fishing a tournament tomorrow on Hartwell

Apr 29, 2022, 9:24 AM

Warning: This is a FacebookCoach similar post

But I can't steer my boat. My first thot was I will just use the trolling motor around the ramp.

But yesterday, I realized I can manually steer the motor left or right. So now I'm all like, dang, I can go fish that point a mile away if I can run the big motor and just get it pointed in the right direction.

I'm assuming though, that I will constantly need to make corrections if there is some play in the engine.

Question: Any ideas on how to attach a giant ###### to my engine to make a Mercury 150 a stick steer?

My first idea: Plunger with pvc slid over the plunger. But that is dumb, right?

My second idea: I have a tamp. I could put a towel between the tamp and the engine and ratchet strap the top and bottom around the engine. But I think that is dumb because I could put too much pressure on strap and crush the cowling.

The plunger is a definite no-go

Is there a webcam at the landing

Apr 29, 2022, 9:27 AM

So we can document this innovative effort?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Eh, I've been in similar sitchs. 2 things:

Apr 29, 2022, 9:27 AM

1. Just fish from the TM and liberate your mind about the big motor. It will just be a distraction.
2. Clean you garage up you slob.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most of the stuff in the floor or on table was in the boat

Apr 29, 2022, 9:31 AM

I just dropped it back there since I had to rush it over to the mechanic and have not put it back in the boat.

I'm not saying my garage is clean, but we easily put the boat, my truck, and wife's car inside it.

How many in here can't even get their car on the garage?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

on the garage, big dummy, *in the garage***

You don't have a FWB? Better than your own boat

Apr 29, 2022, 10:38 AM [ in reply to Most of the stuff in the floor or on table was in the boat ]

Not a single friend with a boat? Find one fast.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually my step-brother has the same boat

Apr 29, 2022, 10:42 AM

and he would let me borrow it. But I don't want to ask.

I broke the helm on my Whaler a few years ago.

Apr 29, 2022, 10:52 AM

In the surf going through a small inlet. Killed the motor quickly and ran to the bow, threw out the anchor. Luckily we didn't flip over. Walked a mile or so to an old fish camp and found enough scrap wood and screws to build a tiller and frame around the 115. Then fished until it was time to go home.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wat?

Apr 29, 2022, 11:39 AM [ in reply to Eh, I've been in similar sitchs. 2 things: ]

I wish my garage was that neat.

I think its funny you still call yourself

Apr 29, 2022, 9:30 AM

A fisherman, and you do not call your boat a fisherman. The last thing i heard, the boat used you as bait and cast you pretty good.

This is why you are the dumbest smart person I know***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure any of that would work.

Apr 29, 2022, 9:37 AM

An engine that size will create massive resistance under power.

But definitely video it if you try any of this, please.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I ain't trying to run 30 mph

Apr 29, 2022, 9:38 AM

I just want to fast idle for a mile

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

PRO TIP:

Apr 29, 2022, 9:39 AM

Hook up a pallet to some bungee cords and fish off of that.

Not sure if you have it set up or not, but try

Apr 29, 2022, 9:42 AM

"Alexa, turn boat right".

Strap axe handle, piece of bamboo, shovel, etc. to it

Apr 29, 2022, 9:43 AM

Throttle with right hand, steer with left.

Are you having to wait on parts? Who is fixing it? I am still in search of a decent boat mechanic.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Surprisingly, he said he could fix it next week

Apr 29, 2022, 9:46 AM

They are ordering a hydraulic kit for me.

M&W Marine in Pendleton but like the other Pendleton near hwy 178.

A friend of mine is friends with Kyle. So that was enough for me to try them out first time. I know you may not be able to take your boat to someone named "Kyle" so I wanted to let you know that up front.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was my first thought--why does that have a cable?

Apr 29, 2022, 9:58 AM

I haven't seen a 150 HP engine with cable steering since the 80's.

If you have the chance, go ahead and get teh Sea Star system over the Bay Star. Bay Star is for up to 150 HP; the Sea Start is for => 150HP. It works better for heavier engines, and the helm has a little better ratio.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cheap I guess

Apr 29, 2022, 10:01 AM

I was gonna go with whatever he recommended. I think Baystar is about $800 and Seastar may be $1200. $500-$600 in labor? Whatevs, I'll only have it another year or two.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For a whole new install, that's probbaly right.

Apr 29, 2022, 10:03 AM

Pulling that cable out will be at least half of it.

A buddy had to get a new Sea Star ram and helm a few months ago; he was $1800 into it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apparently, auto correct is randomly working correctly today***

Striper tourney or bass tourney?

Apr 29, 2022, 10:10 AM

Had a friend fish a striper tourney on Murray last weekend but they didn’t place.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is a device you can strap around the motor to turn it. Somebody local probably sells them.

Apr 29, 2022, 10:19 AM

Just Google strap on.

Re: I have a boat for hire

Apr 29, 2022, 10:51 AM

21' CC w/Yammer 150, trolling motor, 2 live wells, etc. I'm retired and have my own sunscreen. PM me and give me food and shelter tonight. Show me how to catch stripers is the fee.

Oh, I have hydraulic steering so cable breaking wreck is not an issue.

If you had LVS34 and a 12 in garmin on the front, I would

Apr 29, 2022, 10:57 AM

haha. That's the main reason I didn't borrow a boat.

For real, come up here in June and I can show you how. I could now, but I am busy with work and probably working on Sunday.

Maybe mid June
You, me, JohnFBell, and Lakebum1® can go out for stripers one evening and we can swing by wilbur82®'s house just a couple miles away and put a flaming bag of dog #### on his doorstep and drive away.

PS, if you want to catch stripers and hybrids on Hartwell right now, pick any point between the ### and Broyle's and throw topwater. Also, you can easily spot the other striper boats and just fish nearby with livebait. I think it would be hard to 0.

Apr 29, 2022, 11:06 AM

That is doable! Round up the guys!

I do have the Garmin 94sv but nothing on the front yet. Need some advice on that.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Livescope is game changing. Targeted for bass fishermen

Apr 29, 2022, 11:11 AM

but it's very effective on crappie and stripers.

I had 2 93SVs, one bow, one console. But I installed a 1242XSV about a month ago for my livescope on the bow. I can see fish 100 ft from the boat.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That sounds pretty cool.

I'd go with the plunger on the cowling idea, and then you

can insert the handle up into your butt.
