Football Trivia

Jul 25, 2014, 9:07 PM

1. How far are linemen allowed to block downfield on a pass play?

2. Why is it legal for them to move downfield on a screen pass?

3. Can an offensive lineman (guard or tackle) ever catch the ball on a screen play, and if so, how?

(For the record...my name isn't Rob Spence).

10 yards

pass is thrown behind them before they get ten yards.

if it bounces off an eligible receiver first.

How did I do?

Are you a basketball fan?

I hope. :)

0 for 3, but quality attempt on #3. I'll give you some style points for that one.

5 yards
Pass is behind the line of scrimmage
OL would be elligible if he is the end man on the line of scrimmage (any WR's outside of him are not on LoS)

i think you are right with 2&3, but I swear its less than 5 yds for #1. My guess of 4 was wrong, so I am going with 3??

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is 3 yards, unless you are Clemson, then it can be less.

Jul 25, 2014, 10:11 PM

And that is the gospel. We had it called last year, either in the coot game or maybe OSU, but I swear, no O lineman was more than a yard downfield.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's actually not 3 yards***

I think you got it. But assuming a legal formation a lineman would still need to be declared eligible before the play regardless.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

and how would you do that?

Jul 25, 2014, 10:03 PM

You're on the right track.

1. No
2. Correct! Pass is caught behind the LOS.
3. half-way correct. The lineman has to be the end man, but there is something else that would make him eligible.

You have to declare him eligible to the referee before the play.

1. Not past the first level defenders.

2. They are "allowing" defenders to "beat" their blocking.

3. -Batted ball
-eligible number, lined up as a tight end... (outside 5 down linemen)

The end lineman has to have an eligible receiver number

Jul 25, 2014, 10:22 PM

One of the reasons the Sam cooper TD at NCST was so tricky. He was lined up at tackle and eligible by formation and number. I don't see how in a standard formation a guard would be eligible since he would typically be closed by the tackle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A guard wouldn't be eligible, but a tackle would. Correct.

Jul 25, 2014, 10:26 PM

With Sam's TD, you'll see he was an eligible Tackle and no one on the left side of the ball was on the LOS outside of him.

Should we elect to kick or receive at the beginning of a game?
