Football Season Realistically Can't Happen

May 15, 2020, 1:40 PM

If one player, staff or coach tests positive, will those who have been in contact have to quarantine for 14 days. Would seem to make it almost impossible to sustain the numbers necessary to practice or play games.

That's why we'll have to rethink this entire "Oh, no! He's got cooties!" approach.

An educational system stuck on Barely Literate status (because it's terribly inefficient), an Economic system mired in Nonproductivity, a Medical system strategically repositioned to handle only Covid cases to the exclusion of everyone else, and a dubiously representative government that has suspended the Constitution for an extended period of time---these are inevitable outcomes if we don't revise our priorities.

We need to have some serious conversations without the lawyers and politicians playing a role.

The first step is to stop treating anyone who is positive like they Have the plague. The vast majority of people who test positive have either no, or very minor symptoms. Probably need to keep them out of retirement homes or hospitals but acting like they need to be stuck in a cave atop the tallest mountain is a silly reaction at this point.

Correct, people just need to get over their mental paranoia.

Otherwise we won’t have sports for 3-4 years. This is essentially the flu now. It’ll be around for the rest of our lives and at some point people will be accepting of the risk it adds to our lives. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

BMORETIGER change your attitude to BMOREHUMAN. Paranoia is an unreasonable fear. We're closing on 90,000 dead in two months surpassing Vietnam and Korean Wars, and expectations without virus should be in the hundreds of thousands. The spread is many times dangerous in crowded areas where people are yelling and touching. I'm not sure a lot of venders will be able to staff the games. Who wants to lose their lives for peanuts?

Wars kill young healthy individuals. This kills people with one foot in the grave. From a utilitarian perspective, you would probably need this to kill a couple million before it comes close to the catastrophe that were those wars. How many years earlier are people dying from corona than they would otherwise? It’s absurd to think a year lived at 25 is who to a year lived at 95 (from a utilitarian perspective).

This is a mass hysteria that will be looked back at in 20 years with confusion and bewilderment. The risks simply do not justify the response and fear. For the great majority of Americans, they should be far more fearful of driving to work for the next few years than they should be of the virus. They should be far more fearful of heart disease, cancer, obesity and so many other maladies that end the lives of way more. Why we are stuck in this mass hysteria is a question we can only debate. Perhaps the rise of the smart phone and social media has so transformed the methods of communication and media that the brains of humanity are completely beholden to clickbait fear tactics? Perhaps it is some combination of that and intense political division which has destroyed all rational thought in the populace? Either way, this is unmistakably a mass hysteria which is not rooted in logic, reason or science.

I think people are starting to realize that we can’t do that for every single positive case

May 15, 2020, 3:22 PM

The last UFC, there was a fighter who tested positive but they just removed him from the card. They didn’t quarantine everybody who had been around him because everyone else tested negative. Things went on.

Did other fighters participating in the same event train with him? No.

Team sports are more at risk. Individual sports not as much.

Best we can do, for now, is test regularly

May 15, 2020, 4:58 PM

I'm sure these guys go for treatment or anything else. Get tested twice a week on game weeks. I'm hoping we'll be ready and things will have slowed by July, but we need to have something setup in the event that it's no better then than it is today.

We should just wing it. No quarantines at all.

Realistically, we can. I'd suggest we start football EARLY, while the the sun is blazing. Maybe Tar-Hole Swoffy suggested this already - haven't read the article yet. We should wrap it up before flu season comes back for real and run the playoffs at southern outdoor stadiums. What is lost over the last few weeks is that there is pretty convincing evidence from a DHS study that sun and humidity kill the virus. It got lost because all of the "resistors" err..I mean "reporters" (LOL) have basically refused to report on this research. Instead, they used a million gallons of virtual ink telling us how Trump wants people to inject bleach.

Here's the a link to a story, buried 10 results down in a Google search with the other nine stating that sunlight DOESN'T kill the virus. I am sure that is an honest oversight on Google's part though. Besides, they're too busy deleting videos of MD's over on YouTube that dare question Fauci and why they're being pressured to mark every death as COVID-19 related..

Using that rationale nobody should driver again either

May 15, 2020, 4:38 PM

No one should be able to drive again until there are no fatal accidents for 14 consecutive days. Then we can slowly begin to phase in certain classes of people who begin driving again, but at only half the posted speed limit. #safety

Correct, speed limits over 30mph place economic productivity over peoples lives. It’s disgusting.

then what do we do if there isnt a vaccine in 2021?

do we just cancel sports as a whole?

Keep in mind these athletes are over 150X more likely to be murdered or commit suicide than die from Covid-19 according to CDC data... there is no reason we shouldn't have a football season... they get better health care, nutrition and access to COVID testing on campus than they do at their homes, football WILL 100% be played.
