Football Recrutiting, Then and Now

"Then" was just a few short years ago. Our summer camps and official visits were composed of mostly three*** and 4**** recruits. Once in awhile there would be a five***** in the group. And, once in awhile we landed a five***** and thought we were a big time recruiter. Our recruiting territory seldom crossed the Mason-Dixon line to our north or the Mississippi River to our west.
Dabo came galloping into town on a white horse and our recruiting philosophy took a sudden turn. We removed the fences at the Mason-Dixon Line and the Mississippi River and invited prospects from all across the United States (and else where) to come and visit Clemson, a team on the rise who will become a national contender on center stage every year. Lo and behold, they came and were thoroughly impressed with the coaching staff and everything Clemson. This led to many of these young men telling Dabo and staff, "I want to be a part of this program".
If you have read the articles on this and other boards regarding the prospects that are visiting Clemson in June alone, the number of 5***** and high 4**** prospects is amazing. Unfortunately, we don't have enough scholarships available for all of them and there is no guarantee we will gain a commitment from even one, but we can expect Dabo and staff to reel in a few of these top-notch prospects. A winning program is an important element in attracting top talent but, it is the culture and intangibles that sets Clemson apart in the battle for the highly sought prospects.

Dabo and Co. refuses to sign athletes just because of their athletic ability. They must have character also. That is sadly missing in some athletes today.

Have been listening to Atlanta sports radio and they are praising Kirby for getting Gilbert from LSU and Kendrick from Clemson. Gilbert was 2019 Gatorade player of the year in Georgia from Marietta. Both 5-star coming out of high school. They indicated that the gun charges against Kendrick would be dismissed. Slight misunderstanding by the police. Amazing!!!

And.... we will still spank their butts in Charlotte because we will stretch the field with Justin Ross & our healthy WR’s.
We will run the ball with our RB’s & our TE’s will be much improved too.
Our defense will be lights our as our Defensive line will give them fits too. We always start slow setting up the defensive to pick their poison in the 1st quarter but we will be rolling by halftime & we will put the nail in the coffin in the 3rd quarter.
It’s going to be a great game for Tiger fans. This will help our recruiting for years to come.

That the football program has had under Coach Swinney on the entire university is what’s really important. We have all known for years that Clemson was a place like no other and the football team has really helped “spread the word”!

And it's unfortunate that college sports is coming to an end as we know it too! As players flip flop schools at a whim without any negative impact to them the portal is going to change the recruiting landscape. Read article where the portal is going to substantially hurt the recruiting of High School players especially 3*'s and lower because schools will leave open more Schollies so they can suck up transfers. The article suggested that recruiting budgets will decrease as that money will be funneled into ways to help market players that are actually on the team to help them make money with new payday methods approved by states.
Then the article said colleges wont HS players as heavily as they will milk the portal for players and not invest tons into HS players. They don't have to spend money recruiting, they get players with college experience so the players have developed more and are more college ready. School saves money feeding and housing players through their development years and they could actually reduce their schollies. The extra money again used for methods to market kids for their personal monetary gain.
Bottomline, enjoy what we have today because sports in college will forever lose the student athlete feel it has today. Unfortunately, this is sad for me as college sports are the only ones I watch or care about and I will drop them like I dropped NBA and NFL many yrs ago.

Don't know that anyone could have said it better Joe. I am happy and proud that you're a Clemson Tiger.

I remember how excited I would get when we would land more than 3 four star recruits, and we would have a 5 star sign, but not qualify. Those were the days.
