Football recruiting

Jul 7, 2015, 9:18 PM

Concerned with the recruiting commitments so far this year. We came out of the gate very strongly and were ranked in the top five in the U.S. Since that time, there have been 12 decisions that we were part of and we lost 11 of those. Why are we missing all of those? Are our expectations too high? Dabo and his team have done a great job and we all hope we finish strong. With what has happened with the loss of Pinion,Battle, and Lakip, our needs are changed to some degree. Let's hope for a big group of commitments at the All In barbecue. Comments welcome.

as long as we don't end up with losers that punch girls in

We have missed on a few but some may be we cooled down on them. I'm hoping we have some silent commits that want to announce on certain days.

No need for concern at all....

(From an older post I responded to along the same lines)

The grass is green and the offers are a' turnin'. That must mean somebody's winnin' on the recruiting fronts and somebodys losing. Right? Well not necessarily. One could argue that perhaps the most overrated thing which occurs this time of year is the implied belief that early commits, and the class rankings they boost, are a clear indication of success on the football field.

This early in the process, it can be very difficult to completely gauge just how totally committed a verbal commit is. Keep in mind these recruits are teenagers and most know how indecisive teens can be at times. We've seen recruits remain committed from day one of the verbal commit- yet we've also seen theatrical last minute change of hearts. However we've also seen surprising late commits that were not necessarily on a team's big board- in Clemson's particular instance think of highly regarded 2015 DT prospect Christian Wilkins.

So where does this leave us? Well, let's try a comparison to our biggest foe, in FSU. It's still early and they've clearly got a lead on us but it's not over. It's easy for those pseudo-followers to see Kyle Meyers commit to FSU and fret but how much should one actually study that? It works both ways. Would one think they wouldn't have signed or didn't want Rahshaun Smith? TJ Chase? Tavien Feaster? Or last season Albert Huggins? Or Mitch Hyatt?

They're a pretty good team, they've put guys in the league, and they've accomplished a lot lately. That tends to help recruiting- not to undermine what we've done. However you can't always expect elite success simply based on how high some pundits rate your class. Some times a team needs to fill their needs with the appropriate athletes which is what we're doing with this class. Would you rather have Zerrick Cooper or the head ache that is FSU QB prospect Malek Henry- who recently departed IMG Academy for "recurring attitude problems" and "clashing with coaches." Do you really want FSU guys like that and Jameis or would you rather take great kids like Deshaun? It's a no brainer in this guys opinion.

With all do respect to even the biggest naysayer, how could one not be excited about our 2016 class? We've landed the best running back in the nation in Tavien Feaster. Check out his film and you'll be enamored by his play, I kid you not. One would be hard pressed to find a more physical linebacker than Rahshaun Smith. T.J. Chase is perhaps the most underrated wide receiver in the country. The same can be said for offensive lineman Sean Pollard- Pollard is a stud by the way. LB Jamie Skalski is killin' it in the weight room and looks to be all or 230 or more and reminds me of Spencer Shuey. However one must realize that our class is already elite and only getting better. Our coaches know what they're doing and their resumes over the past few seasons is indeed telling. (We got this)

In addition, we should all remember that Vic Beasley was not a top rated prospect coming out of high school- a three star actually. Neither was Spencer Shuey who redshirted, remember. Chandler Catanzaro walked on. The coaching and development of athletes should not be overlooked. Baylor was a cellar dweller team until they found the right coach. Ever see Boise State high up in the recruiting rankings? Or how about Michigan State (consistently)? Or two-time SEC East champs Missouri. Just a thought to keep thing in perspective.

How many of those 11 were we no longer pursuing?

That's part of the answer you are missing.

Class

To complete the class

Jul 7, 2015, 10:42 PM

We need 1 more receiver, 2-3 more OL, 1-2 DT, 1-3 DE, 1 LB, 1-2 CB

People need to remember

Jul 7, 2015, 10:47 PM

that as of right now even with the departures we only have two spots left due to the 85 limit. Now that doesn't take into consideration potential early departures like Kearse, Lawson, Alexander or Williams, but you get the idea that we are limited this year. It is not the 25, it is the 85.

We are following up a stellar class with another stellar, but smaller class.

We are doing more than fine people.

The players we're taking are mostly good, but college football is an arms race and our rivals and biggest competition for championships are getting all the best weapons.

Re: People need to remember

Jul 7, 2015, 10:56 PM

Uhhh....We have Scott, Cain, McCloud, Feaster, Powell, Chase, Bell, Richard, Williams, Chalk, Dye, Choice, Gallman, Watson, Bryant, Cooper. I am having trouble seeing where we are don't have young fire power that can't compete with anyone.

Looks like we are absolutely stacked to me and we are looking to solidify some key places on our roster like future OL, DL. Stud DE, CB, and LB. Guys like Lamar, Pinckney, Simpson will go a long ways towards that. Adding Osbourne, Gary, and/or Lawrence will pretty much assure that we have top line talent with staying power at the top of the polls for the next 4 years.

Not concerned at all. There are 119 OTHER colleges out there that need players, and appeal to some of the players that we are after. We cant take EVERYONE. Our recruiting is in good hands.

GUYS! Don't forget about specialist! Alex Barbir is a NEED!

Jul 7, 2015, 11:13 PM [ in reply to Small class in 2016 really only need 2 OL & 1LB/DE to comple ]

This young man is a definite take! Trust me, actually just read the bio and you'll see. (Yes, I'm such a recruiting nut that I keep up with the specialist)

Here's his bio that I've compiled so far...

K Alex Barbir 5-9 186 #######, GA South Forsyth

Ranked the #3 kicker in the nation according to Chris Sailer. #2 by 24/7.com. Was at Dabo Swinney Camp in June (just confirmed by a source). Has an offer from Army, Air Force, Navy, Rutgers and others. Drawing interest from Bama, Auburn, BC, Clemson, and others. In 2014, 90% of his kickoffs went into the endzone for touchback (34 of 41). He accounted for 45 points and converted 6 of 8 field goals. Barbir was also 42 of 43 on extra points. Had a game where he made 4 FGs, including a 56 yarder, and 7 of 8 kickoffs went for a touchback to earn him Kohl's Kicking Camp Player of the Week. 1st Team All-State 6AAAAAA. Two time All-Region and All-County member. Barbir competed in the Elite Junior Classic game on December 29th where he handled both placekicking and punting duties. Unofficially visited Clemson in April of 2014. According to one source, he was at Dabo Swinney Camp on June 13th. Attended two games this past fall. He was injured last year and did not get the chance to attend camp and show off his skills.

Bio- Barbir began playing soccer when he was 4 and converted to football later. The football coaches noticed his strong leg during an 8th grade game of kickball during P.E. His father played soccer in college. Barbir was born in Romania. He participates in Flood Ministries, a student community organization focused on having students participate in mission opportunities in the community and has previously spent time in serving to the homeless. He also carries a 3.5 GPA. His cousin, Danny, plays for the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team and is in the West Bromwich Albion youth academy.

A short read- Less than a week after he was in Clemson for the N.C. State game, 2016 kicker Alex Barbir connected on field goals from 56, 52, 40 and 20 yards.

The South Forsyth (#######, Georgia) junior nailed the four in the 33-8 win over Northview, which tied the state record for the second most made field goals in a single game.

His make from 56 yards also made a little bit of history.

“I set a new personal record, broke the high school record, broke the county record and, I think, it’s the ninth-longest in Georgia state history,” Barbir said.

“The facilities are definitely top of the line, some of the best in college football,” Barbir said. “There’s really no stadium like Death Valley.

Film of the 56 yarder- http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2872248/highlights/184190376/v2

On Clemson- “The fans, everything about that, I love. The fans, when I went, were crazy. They were always going and being loud, doing different chants. That’s something that I would really want to be around.”

Side note quote- "I had to choose between soccer and football, and I chose football because I know it’s what I can do in college," Barbir said. "The way you kick the ball in soccer and football is totally different. In football, you need muscle memory in your leg to do the same motion every time. It’s hard to keep that going back and forth with playing soccer."

A cool read- South Forsyth coach Jeff Arnette’s decision to send kicker Alex Barbir out for a 56-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter drew incredulous chuckles and glances in the bleachers at War Eagle Stadium.

By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, and Barbir had drilled that 56-yard kick and a 52-yard field goal, South fans were calling for Arnette to trot Barbir out for an attempt when a War Eagle drive stalled 85 yards from the end zone.

South used unrelenting pressure on Northview quarterback DJ Pearson, Barbir’s four field goals and two first-half touchdown passes from Matt White to hand Northview its first loss, 33-8, on Friday night.

"Their kicker killed us," Northview head coach Chad Davenport said. "I mean, how many times do you say that? He was unbelievable."

Barbir made 58- and 60-yard attempts in practice this week, but 56 is his longest made kick and tied for ninth-longest in state history with four other players.

"I didn’t have to convince coach Arnette to send me out there," Barbir said. "That was the longest kick we’ve attempted in a game, but after they saw me in practice this week, the coaches were confident giving me a shot."

Arnette smiled big when talking about his junior kicker, who had touchbacks on six of his eight kickoffs.

"Barbir out here tonight, I don’t know that I’ve seen any high schooler make from 56, 52 and 44 yards in the same game," he said. "If they have, I haven’t seen it."
From kicking guru Chris Sailer- "Alex is an outstanding kicker. A good athlete with a very strong leg. Field goals are smooth accurate off the ground. One of the top FG kickers in his class. Kickoffs are strong and shows promise. Has the tools to be one of the very best. Should have a big spring and challenge for an "Event Elite" spot this may in Las Vegas. Nice college prospect."

Here is a great read on him- http://www.forsythnews.com/archives/25864/

A short read- "PK Alex Barbir of #######, GA made an unofficial visit to Clemson for the Georgia State game. Clemson and Auburn are his favorites and he has an offer from Army. Barbir said Clemson remains interested but wants to see him kick in person before talking about an offer. This season Barbir had field goals of 56 and 52 yards and hit six of eight attempts. "
