Follow up to Cata's post earlier ... what defines "extreme"

or "kooky" in each party? I agree that most of us, regardless of ideological or political leanings are closer to the middle, and that often the extreme/kooky people have disproportionate influence on each side, and they certainly get more media coverage.

So, regardless of your own "side", give some examples of extreme/kooky ideas or policies (not people) on each side.

Pubs: Ban all abortion.

Idiocy.

Dems: White supremacy is our greatest threat.

Pathetic pandering.

From the far left - Being anti-nuclear, doing away with fossil fuels in the next 20 years, want to increase spending on social programs, reparations

From the far right - 2020 election was stolen, want to increase defense spending, doing away with permits for concealed carry, against common-sense gun laws

I don't get the anti-nuke take in this country. France has got it going on, with 70% of its power produced by nukes.

Abortion ban. Stupid.
To a greater extent marrying the party to the religious right. Stupid.
Of the 147 congressmen who did not vote to certify Bidens election…118 house reps and 8 senators are still in office and official election deniers. These people are kooks.
MAGA pubs. For gods sake, get these idiots out of the party. America needs a functioning GOP.
Challenging every election with pure BS. Just stop.
Acceptance of political violence. If the mob would’ve gotten a hold of Pence or Pelosi…they would be dead now. Just phukkin stop it. Don’t support anyone who downplays Jan 6. Quit giving any credence to militia group..it’s insane that anyone thinks proud boys, or any of those biker gangs without bikes groups, are acceptable.
Blaming everything on the left. US needs two parties y’all. Just quit it.

EV everything. Dumb, it’d make Elon happy, but dumb. Oil & Gas industry is intimately tied with our national security, quit blaming them for everything. Diversify energy sources without trying cut out the largest source. Gas, EVs, and hybrids can and should coexist.

Extreme is more mainstream in one group than the other.

Abortion ban. Stupid.

Agreed. Fortunately the vast majority of republicans do not support a total abortion ban, so that's not a mainstream republican idea. I don't think that some limitations on abortion are extreme/kooky at all.

To a greater extent marrying the party to the religious right. Stupid.

Agree totally. Thank goodness most republicans think religion should be kept separate from government policies as well. And I would say that expecting ones beliefs and values (including religious ones) to be reflected in government is perfectly normal, and acceptable, and is not the same as "marrying religion to government".

Of the 147 congressmen who did not vote to certify Bidens election…118 house reps and 8 senators are still in office and official election deniers. These people are kooks.

This may be my biggest problem with republicans. No excuses here in my mind - this was ill-advised at best, and nothing more than political posturing in support of a bogus, dangerous cause.

I denounce anybody's support of Proud Boys or any malitia group who participated in Jan 6 violence, or any other such violence or illegal activities. I'm sure that some elected republicans have not denounced them strongly enough to satisfy many, but I hardly think violent malitia groups have the support of mainstream republicans.

Blaming everything on the left. US needs two parties y’all. Just quit it.

Yep. I would add "seeing everything through a partisan political/ideological lens" ... Are those democrat shoes? That's clearly a republican car. Typical democrat food. etc., etc.

Some others have pointed out some Dem extremism - what do you think?

White Supremacy is our biggest threat.

I agree that certain militia/hate groups are motivated by white supremacy, and that they do pose a real danger to some extent. However, their number are extremely small, and in the big picture, of all of the problems we have in America, white supremacy is wayyyyy down the list. Kooky. Yet, this gets a huge push from many prominent, mainstream democrats.

Reparations.

Extreme and totally kooky. Yet again, this is strongly embraced by many mainstream democrats.

Defunding police.

In some form of fashion, this actually happened in many democrat controlled cities. Kooky. Extreme.

Gender identity and "men can have babies".

Personally, I believe anyone is free to identify however they choose. With rare possible exceptions, I will respect their chosen identiy. No one, however, should be forced to concede that, as a matter of fact, a person born with a peanus and x and y chromosomes can menstruate or have children, or is in fact, a woman. I believe there are real, significant differences between male and female, and feelings don't change it. I think most democrats agree, but there are an alarming number who say otherwise, and that is the ultimate extreme, kooky, insanity.

I am a white male baby boomer who was raised in a middle-class conservative Christian environment. Along with that comes some inevitable, built-in biases. I admit that up front, and I don't apologize for it.

The main problem I see with mainstream republicans is those who stood with Trump in his ridiculous claims of a stolen election, and have since failed to walk that back or denounce it. Yet, I see a lot of things accepted or embraced or accepted by mainstrean dems that seem kooky and extreme. Just my admittedly biased view.

Left: New Green Deal, let kids get gender surgeries, ban conservative speakers from colleges, punish people for comments/actions made that were clearly not meant to be offensive (like serving chicken and waffles at a school during Black History Month), pronouns in email signatures, defund police, the idea that street violence is needed to stop police violence, punish people for not wearing masks or getting vaccines, ban all guns.

Right: Ban books, ban ideas we don't like from classrooms, ban all abortions, circumvent the Constitution for tough men authoritarians, believing a civil war is needed to set us right, conspiracy theories like the election or COVID or the FBI fabricates cases, supporting or defending Jan. 6, white supremacy in some way, shape, or form, imprison people for political speech (NC_Tiger!), gerrymander for the win, thinking any idea you don't like is "woke", we're a Christian nation and should have it infused in government.

Really, when anyone wants to ban ANYTHING that should fall under the First Amendment protection, they should be looked at as an extremist first and we'll sort out the details later.

Extreme policy

2

Feb 8, 2023, 2:02 PM

any policy that has to pass by simple majority (adding everything into budget bills does may be legal, but it's not "right"). Laws are supposed to be HARD to pass.

Omnibus spending bill = (NEVER passed by a lame duck session in modern history) extreme
New Green Deal = extreme
Tuition handout = extreme (bypassing congress)

Since the end game for both sides of extremists is revolution and dead Americans. It just seems right now that the nuts on the right are more excited for that possibility.

In my view, right wing extremists are exemplified by the nuts who stormed the capitol. Those are the ones who want revolution and dead people, using your words. I was born, raised and worked all of my life with conservative Christian working class gun-loving commie-hating people. They are mostly anti-government, and they live their lives and work their plan accordingly. Sure, conservatives work through traditional government channels to have their voices heard, but not the revolution-seeking extremists we are talking about here. They are anti-government, and are working outside the government to prepare for what they believe is inevitable. I know a couple who have acculated guns and ammo and have a "plan" for when the shid hits the fan, so I know they exist. I also know their numbers are very small.

Left-wing extremists, however, seek to affect change primariy through government power and authority, by attempting to normalize extreme ideas through control of media and the education system. They are much more likely to use civil unrest and protest as opposed to militia dressed up in camo and playing soldier; rather, they will have the government to carry out the force and violence on their behalf.

That's the way I see the extremes of each party. One remains on the fringe, while the other is becoming more and more embedded in government.

I don’t see it as remotely close to even

Feb 8, 2023, 9:45 PM [ in reply to Equal ]

Short term, the people who keep tabs on domestic threats at DHS talk mostly about far-right conspiracies like white genocide as primary source of risk, which has been the most common spark for mass shootings.

I couldn’t find any similar warnings about Antifa, Environmentalists, or trans folk, though they did mention threats related to the SCOTUS abortion ruling.

Long term, I’d say the biggest risk is that elements within our own military organize and carry out a significant plot that goes really bad. Mike Flynn’s bro could be that guy, or someone like him. One thing they have in common, they ain’t lefties.

The Left: Identity politics. People setting common sense aside in order to justify support of a tribe.

The Right: Just about everything else. They #### and moan about freedom but don't care about the freedom of anyone who isn't a white christian. Oppressing the reproductive rights of women. Care about fetuses more than living, breathing people. Blind obedience to the police and the military. Constantly embracing socially divisive nonsense.
