The Irish in The Valley

The Irish in The Valley
Years ago I would get excited when I saw a football series announced for an out of conference opponent. I can remember thinking Clemson was going to play Oklahoma in a home and home and Oklahoma State in a two game set. I remember hearing Clemson was to play two ga

to begin lowering capacity to < 40k, immediately reducing the risk DV would ever be targeted.

motion with his hand toward the officials. I was sitting on the hill that day, and the myth spread through Johnstone that he shot us the finger. It sounded good so everyone went with that.

The play I remember most was Calicutt fumbling inside the 5 late.

I never saw Devine give us the finger....

Back in 1977 my family had seats on the North side of the stadium about half-way up on the 35 yard line.

While I did see him gesture a few times, I never saw Dan Devine give Clemson the finger.

I'm not saying it didn't happed but if it did, I did not see it and I was sitting behind the Notre Dame bench.

Agreed on the "finger thing",.. I too was on the Hill that game, and don't recall that. Still can't believe they came back to beat us after the physical whipping we laid on them that day,.. luck of the Irish I guess (and likely had something to do with a fellow named Joe Montana).

Dan Devine was a complete a_s_s_ that day.

An absoultely perfect death valley afternoon against the team that eventually won the national cham[pionship that year and we arguably gave them their gretest test. We had a 17-7 lead in tte 3rd quarter but had some critical turnovers in their redzone when we could have put the game away. At least 2 if memory serves me.

MP is absolutely correct about the silent treatment pre game. One other sidelight on the ND crowd noise whining. A local redio station ran a "send earplugs to south bend" promotion and about 15000 pairs showed up for the poor iwish and their sensitive wittle ears.

One of the most memorable days I have spent in death valley. If we hadnt had those turnovers it might be THE most memorable.

That game still ranks as one of the loudest in DV.....

that I have attended. The most impressive aspect about the noise level on that afternoon; it was before the upper decks were added.

Good read... Although bringing up the fact that we won't be going to Norman, Stillwater, Nashville, and Oxford continues to bum me out.

We need OOC games in 16 & 17 and then again in 19 & 20

Apr 18, 2013, 11:50 AM [ in reply to It is my understanding the Athletic department is.... ]

If I were a betting man, I'd say we'd try to get a Kick-Off Classic game in 16 or 17, which means we might have to play 3 "weaker" opponents in one of those years.

Although, it looks like we could possibly schedule Vandy in 16 & 17 or 19 & 20.

We couldn't schedule Ole Miss until 19 & 20, based on their current OOC schedules.

I hope we can get OK State back in 19 & 20. They currently still have those dates open.

I believe we would go to ND in 2018 and they'd come back to us in 2021 and so on every 3 years.

i was at that '77 game, my first in DV

Apr 18, 2013, 11:23 AM

as a 9 year old. It sealed my passion for Tiger football, hands down. My father, a life long ND fan, took me to the game thinking that he was going to seal me into being an ND fan but my Uncle, a '56 Clemson grad was there with us and it was a wrap....three memories from that game were the 4th quarter turnovers (a fumbled punt and kickoff, if i remember correctly) that ND recovered and turned into points one of which was the Montana led drive to win late in the game towards the Hill end zone i was sitting in and seeing my Pop lose it when they scored. The second one was the half-gallon of JD that was being passed up and down the Hill that everyone was sipping from, to include my Pop and Uncle, and last but best of all was going on the field at the end of the game and finding ND's All-World TE Ken McAfee, who my father loved, and my father telling him good game, etc. and he looked down at me with my #99 Clemson jersey on, squeezed my shoulder, and told my Pop something to the effect of "That was the toughest football team i've ever played against...that #98 was the toughest SOB i've ever lined up against...he hit me harder all day than anyone i've played against...i'll be sore for a week"...#98 was Mark Heniford, a 195 pound DE who played like someone just stole something from him and i remember looking at McAfee's bloody tape all over his hands and the Orange scars on his gold helmet and that sealed the deal for me as a Tiger for life...our DE Jonathan Brooks gave me his game pants belt and mouthpiece after the game when he was talking to Joe Montana....Joe patted me on the head and shook my father's hand.....DV sounded like an earthquake that day and though we lost, i was a Tiger forever because of that day.

^^^ THIS is a great story! Thanks for sharing.

Folks who weren't there that day...

Apr 18, 2013, 11:34 AM

...I fear will never be able to appreciate the heart, emotion and visceral noise that exploded when the cannon sounded that day. Yes it has been loud since ... perhaps even louder a time or two. Yes, big games have been played, and even won.

But that day it was Clemson against the green Goliath. for the first time in a generation, we were playing a heavy favorite in the Valley and we felt ... no, we BELIEVED ... that we were going to win.

You want a definition of All In? That game, that emotion, that unceasing inferno of sound under a brilliant blue autumn sky was the perfect example. And it is something I hope people can share once again in late August.

With a different conclusion, of course.

Saw comments 'bout attending the 77 Irish game. Took my dad to the game. Think tickets cost me $175. Would have paid more, it was Dads last game at Clemson.

Does anyone remember coach D. just before the game started walking out on the field with a tape measure and measuring several line markers to be sure we "ole" country boys could be trusted to actually get distances correct. That started a hate relationship with him and fans through the entire game. Yea every time he got upset at the officals we gave him H#ll !

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But won't the IRA target us? If we haven't banned pass outs

Apr 18, 2013, 3:27 PM

by then, I might just leave at the half in the name of safety...No reason to chance the 3rd quarter...That's when we're most vulnerable...
