Do you prefer fishing alone or with a friend?

Apr 21, 2022, 11:11 PM

And why?

I’ve never minded a friend, if I want to feel solitude I can always walk a ways downstream and let the water drown out the rest of my reality. Anyways, the weather is perfect and I should go fishing more.

In a stream, alone. In a boat, with someone. Don’t ask me why? Fishing is oftentimes just an excuse for a couple of dudes to spend some time together and say very little.

You can get away with asking a friend to go fishing. Not so much, to go sit near you for hours and say not much of anything.

Landing at the ABQ Sunport in a few hours. Don Choche for lunch and then S to the Gila.

Thanks for the weather report. Windy today though.

watching paint dry is just as productive. However, you should try golf. God invented it for people who can't catch fish after their paint is dry and their grass has grown.

Took a friend last night on Hartwell. It's best to not go alone on the boat, but I do quite a bit anyways. Also, I enjoy putting people on the fish. He caught a 5.3 largemouth and a 4 lb largemouth. I caught some smaller bass and a 10 lb striper.

My recommendation for someone just trying to catch is a bass is #2, throw on a spinning reel with 8 lb line. Most bites occur on the fall.

I fish alone a lot because I like coming and going on my schedule. There are only a handful of people I enjoy fishing with. I'm sure I would enjoy fishing with some of youse guise. I take my fishing semi-seriously although I often release my catch. I'll fish for practically any kind of fish but trout fishing is probably tops with inshore a close second. I probably have company on the boat when possible but doesn't really matter to me.

My favorite fishing partner is my son. He goes just as hard as I do. Much harder really. His fishing and hunting accomplishments have far exceeded mine and he is only 22. He called me a big turkey last Saturday. That was a great hunt.

now I am too old to be much of a fisherman, and now of course I usually fish the big waters alone, although some friends think I shouldn’t. Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise.
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.

Sometimes someone would speak in a boat. But most of the boats were silent except for the dip of the oars. They spread apart after they were out of the mouth of the harbour and each one headed for the part of the ocean where he hoped to find fish. The old man knew he was going far out and he left the smell of the land behind and rowed out into the clean early morning smell of the ocean. He saw the phosphorescence of the Gulf weed in the water as he rowed over the part of the ocean that the fishermen called the great well because there was a sudden deep of seven hundred fathoms where all sorts of fish congregated because of the swirl the current made against the steep walls of the floor of the ocean. Here there were concentrations of shrimp and bait fish and sometimes schools of squid in the deepest holes and these rose close to the surface at night where all the wandering fish fed on them.

The fog's just lifting. Throw off your bow line, throw off your stern. You head out to South channel, past Rocky Neck, Ten pound island. Past Niles Pond where I skated as a kid. Blow your airhorn and throw a wave to the lighthouse keeper's kid on Thatcher Island. Then the birds show up, black backs, herring gulls, big dump ducks and green legged coots. The sun hit ya , head North, open up to 12, steamin' now. The guys are busy, you're in charge. Ya know what? You're a ####### swordboat captain! Is there any thing better in the world?

Felt a pang late one afternoon
I was fishin' off Muir beach
With Larry LaLonde
I grabbed a tuna salad sandwich
And I started to chew
Pretty soon Ler's yellin
Fish on
Fish on
I was just a little pup
And it was derby day
It was dad and me and Darrell
Out in San Pablo Bay
Taco-flavored Doritos
And my orange life vest
Dad caught a hundred pound sturgeon
On twenty-pound test
Now, he fought that fish for 'bout an hour and a half
Darrell'd say, "Jump, you sons a #####!"
And he grabbed for the gaff
When we got him in the boat
He measured six feet long
I was so danged impressed
I had to write this song called
Fish on
Fish on
Fish on
Fish on
It was a bright sunny day
It was me and Todd Huth
Fishin' shark and stingray
Out of Bolinas Lagoon
Well, hey, hey, hey
I'll be screwed blued and tattooed
Looks like I got me one of them
Fish on
Fish on

Well I love her
And I love to fish
I spend all day out on this lake
And hell is all I catch
Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin' hole today
She'd be packin' all her things
And she'd be gone by noon
Well I'm gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I'm on this lake shore
And I'm sittin' in the sun
I'm sure it'll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
That I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite
Now there's a chance that if I hurry
I could beg her to stay
But that water's right
And the weather's perfect
No tellin' what I might catch today
So I'm gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I'm on this lake shore
And I'm sittin' in the sun
I'm sure it'll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
Yeah, I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, another bite
Yeah, I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite

I understand but work is has always been one of my pleasures. Yep, I'm some kind of a pervert but when I didn't like doing a job I'd quit. I'm also a quitter.

I've seen some miserable days on the lake (if there's any such thing as a miserable day on the lake).

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There are four people in my life I loved fishing with.

Apr 23, 2022, 6:15 AM

My father, my friend and teacher Daniel who taught me how to really catch fish on the worst day in the worst weather situation, and my two sons.

My father, family and me would sit pretty much in one spot on a river or lake using a cane pole or some cheap Zebco rod and reel. Sometimes we'd catch enough fish for a meal. Dad was a long distance truck driver so those days were precious to me.

I met Daniel through his brother who worked for me. Steve and I talked a bit about fishing and since I hadn't been in SC upstate much I had asked about the lakes near to Easley where we lived. He said he would get Daniel to take me and show me the area.

Over the next four or five years Daniel and I fished in at least 20 small to medium size ponds, some private and some open to the public. We also fished a few rivers and trout fished the streams. Rain didn't bother him much but one lightening strike would send him toward the bank. I won't list the many fishing stories I have from those years fishing with Daniel but there are enough to fill a good book. The subject of each would be somewhat different but as a results of those days I was able to teach my two sons to catch fish. Not just fish, I mean trophies to most people.

During the last 35 yrs of fishing with my boys we all caught great LM bass, one son caught a 2+ lb crappie and my baby boy caught a fish we couldn't find a scale to weigh. That was 27 yrs ago, it was in the 10+lb range and landed by an 8 y/o with a small spinning reel and 6lb test line by himself. A 10 lb bass is a trophy in SC no matter who you are. It cost me over $125 bucks even back then to mount that fish.

I remember trying to get the best photo of the fish by having him hold it by the mouth hanging in front of his body so it would show the width and length of the fish compared to him. He held it a bit lower than his chin and the tail reached down near to his knees.

As much as I loved fishing with them there was a time in my life when I fished alone. I was retired, both sons had jobs and I lived near to Williamston Watershed. I would load my 12 alum boat in the back of the truck, prepare all the gear and with private access to the watershed I would be on the water and watch the Sun come up.

On those mornings I though a lot. I thought about life, I thought about my earthly father, I though a lot about my Heavenly Father and I though a lot about all those years of fishing with daddy, Daniel and my sons. I was a good day to be on the lake before speaking to another human and most time I never saw another human.

I rose this morning about an hour ago. I was upset for some thumpers who were cruising this neighborhood and Bless God now that I've had a reason to calm down and not try out my 45cal 1911 on a moving target. Thanks for the topic. It's just what I needed.
