First Monday after vacation sucks.

Jul 12, 2022, 9:16 AM

Usually this is because of returning to work, but it can suck worse when you've got no job to return to.

Wife and I were celebrating our 25th anniversary in the North Georgia mountains last week. Wonderfully relaxing, began the morning with a run down the mountain and most of the way back up. We then did a morning to early afternoon hike, chilled at the cabin in the afternoon, cooked a nice dinner & dessert (trying new recipes), and evening sexy.

My employer was nice enough to contact me mid-vacation under the premise of an urgent work issue to tell me I was part of the most recent cost reduction measures. Not sure why it was necessary to do it while I was on vacation as I was getting paid those vacation days anyhow (and have already received my unused 3 weeks). But they're paying me $22k severance and $5400 to pay for 3 months of cobra (which goes in my pocket as we've confirmed that we can switch to my wife's employers insurance without a gap in coverage). So it's likely something that's beneficial to me, provided I can find a similar remote job. Been with this company for 15 years and previously worked for a company they bought (although it's the 2nd time they've let me go).

I think he's more of a developer

But maybe he can chime in

Jul 12, 2022, 12:03 PM

I don't do weekends unless they pay me for it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm in the middle and it can be awesome

Jul 12, 2022, 12:13 PM

and suck at the same time.

I direct some people, they do it, it gets done, we good.
They DON'T do it or don't have time, I get to do it, and it cost alot more because my rate is higher, then it kills the budget and I get yelled at, but we scoped it with lower level people doing the work and they just were not available.

drunk at the putt putt.

I've never had to terminate anyone,

Jul 12, 2022, 9:44 AM

but I would guess that they wanted to let you know ASAP because if they didn't, you would hear about the downsizing from someone else. Sucks that you were on vacation, but at least they made sure you heard it from them instead of through the grapevine.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

MauldinT, where are you???

That's what they said.

Jul 12, 2022, 9:54 AM

But they had a hard time getting hold of me to terminate me as I was ignoring them because I was on vacation. The way it works is they terminate people first thing in the morning, then invite everyone to a department meeting where they announce the terminations. They finally tracked me down a few hours after the department meeting (that I got an invite to).

Our stock was did rise to almost 85 cents after they terminated me, but has since dropped to 73 cents. So not sure how much it helped. I suspect they're preparing to file for bankruptcy.

Does severance get paid out like a bonus and they

Jul 12, 2022, 9:47 AM

tax the everliving shiiiiit out of it? I know it would all work out in the end, but was just wondering.

$27k should keep you afloat for a couple weeks until you can find another job. Good luck!

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes.

Jul 12, 2022, 9:52 AM

severance payments are classified as "supplemental wages" for income tax purposes. Employers must withhold income tax from such payments at a flat 22% rate.

It's better than getting nothing.

Jul 12, 2022, 9:58 AM

Considering they weren't obligated to give me anything beyond unpaid vacation.

Congrats on the sex I guess?***

I bet that made for a tdrake-y rest of the vacation.

Jul 12, 2022, 9:51 AM

That's a bummer. Nice severance though.

As far as new career opportunities go, have you considered

Jul 12, 2022, 10:04 AM

stealing credit card numbers to make purchases at Sam's Club and then selling said merchandise? I've heard it's a lucrative business.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sorry bruh, but I remember the last time you switched

Jul 12, 2022, 10:08 AM

Jobs and all the “Thomas” third person stories and how much happier you were on the other side of the search. It’ll happen again, I’m confident.

Not sure if that was 2001 when I was threatened legally for

Jul 12, 2022, 12:11 PM

stealing intellectual property. Or in 2007 when my most recent employer contacted me about returning 2 years after they'd let me go and I sent the reply all eff you email after my rehire was announced and we'd not even discussed salary yet. I didn't get on a plane to Houston for the job interview and instead made people fly to SC to meet me.

I was on the Lounge for both, even got free legal counsel from a lounge lawyer on the intellectual property issue.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hate that for you.

Jul 12, 2022, 10:08 AM

Its a chitty feeling--I can certainly identify with it. And its hard to get motivated to start going through that process. Good luck finding what you want quickly.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've not written a resume since the late 1990's.

Jul 12, 2022, 12:16 PM

I hate change. Five years ago I worked for a recognized growing company, but a decade or so ago they started buying companies instead of growing organically. 5 years ago they made some bad purchases and have been completely mismanaged since.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hve you thought about burning the building down???

Jul 12, 2022, 12:14 PM

Like In office Space? Clearly this is the play here

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can I do that virtually?

Jul 12, 2022, 12:19 PM

I'm 1000 miles away.
