South Carolina might have a lot of problems as a state, but, it, by FAR, ain't the worst.

For me...
Nov 15, 2021, 4:41 PM
|

but for a short time in Kentucky (as an infant), I have lived the vast majority of my life in North Carolina and South Carolina (predominately South Carolina).
Shortly after my family moved from North Carolina to South Carolina, my grandfather (Class of 1924) took me to my first Clemson game. The year was 1971.
Thank you PawPaw.

I have lived in eight states. Some of those for relatively short amounts of time.
Virginia South Carolina Oregon West Virginia D.C. Maryland New York Alaska
For now, I will say my home is The United States of America.
Loved my undergraduate time at Clemson!!!! It will be one of the places I would like a portion of my ashes to be spread.

I lived in Greenville for 19 years. Moved to Winston-Salem, NC and lived there 4 years while working for Duke Power (now Duke Energy). Transferred back to SC and lived in Greenville for the next 27 years. Travelled for 10 years during that time as a contractor in IT (worked in AL, GA, NC, TN, and VA), but always kept my home base in Greenville. Moved to Macon, GA 13 years ago to work in IT. Getting ready to retire within the next 1 - 2 years and move back permanently to SC (will move back sooner if I can convince the powers that be to let me move and work from home fulltime). Would love to move back to Greenville, but with the housing market the way it is, probably somewhere in the triangle between Greenville, Anderson, and Seneca.

If near retirement or retiring, I would look at this area.
Good people, good climate, good everything. Crime is low, Frank Howard Field is near.
City life (Greenville, Anderson, Atlanta) are near when you need a fix.
If I hit the lotto, not moving.

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely consider the area. Back when I was in G'ville, I used to ride my motorcycle in that area quite a bit. Beautiful area!

We did pretty much the same thing, except the jobs kept me further away from SC for a very long time. About 2 years ago we moved to a small neighborhood between Easley, Anderson and Powdersville. Couldn’t be happier.

Plan ahead.
While living in NC to earn a living, did on site research as to a future "home". The Bride and I would take fun weekend trips looking at places to someday build a "home". We had a really good, house in Matthews, NC we made payments on for 30 years, but ~~~
We went on weekend trips and looked at places with water along the NC and SC coasts and inland lakes. We had no $$. It was fun weekends as she is a fun girl. It was a fun hobby as were the dreams. Realtors drive you around or give you places to consider. They have no idea you have no money.
We saw some great places we could never afford. We saw some places we would never consider moving too. A safe home was paramount to me. I lock my doors but like knowing I don't have to.
One day coming back from one a realtor had suggested, saw a tiny sign "lake lots for sale". It was down a tiny dirt road where brothers were selling off the family land. It was too over grown to get to the water or park your car off the dirt road The next week took out a ten year 2nd mortgage at the credit union. Ten years later owned that land, sold my Matthews house and built my "home" there.
Plan ahead.

We always planned to go back to the Upstate from Charleston

We are both Clemson grads, and have family there. Never had a well defined plan…just “someday”. Without going into a bunch of detail, I had two major health events last year that got my attention (fully recovered now, as far as I can tell), and a little over a year ago I told my wife that life is too short, and someday may never come. We decided that instead of waiting for the proverbial “perfect” time to sell the house, look for jobs, and pull up roots, we would look for a “bridge” house…one that would give us a toehold in the Upstate but that we could afford now. Two weeks later, we had a contract on our little piece of heaven in the shadow of Table Rock…we call it the “halfway house”. Best thing we ever did. That place feels more like HOME than any place we’ve ever lived full time. Come see us, neighbor!

Just got done putting the winter rye out in my yard this past weekend. If any of you wish to come over and watch the demon weakuns’ get beat down this weekend go ahead. Just a heads up though, the 12th changing room to the in- ground heated basement pool access is down for repairs, caught some guy named Bob trying to spy on Francis by cutting holes in the wall.

We had pipes run all the way from the dairy and the winery to the house. So you could turn one faucet to get milk and the other to get wine. Nothing like fresh wine from the faucet for breakfast!

Hey George, the lawn looks great. Must take an hour or two to cut with a push mower. Also nice 3 BR 2 bath ranch there. Be careful what you eat during those viewing parties to avoid getting a fatal attack of appendicitis.

It's been pretty boring but I am not one to jump from job to job and city to city. As Blake Shelton says, I was born in God's Country (Upstate, SC) and that's where they will bury me. I bet you have that song stuck in your head now!
SC 25 years - Upstate GA 8 years - Savannah SC 12 years - Upstate

Born in Athens, GA but grew up in Clemson. Graduated from Clemson in 2006 as a 4th generation CU grad. Lived in Raleigh for 12 years and was fortunate enough to move back to Clemson in 2019. Don’t plan on going anywhere else.

As we used to say in the Army - home is where you hang your hat and I've had quite a few (18 moves in 27 years) that included:
South Carolina Georgia Ohio Tennessee Kentucky Kitzingen, Germany Louisiana Kansas Nebraska Florida Pennsylvania North Carolina
I also only listed each State once when I lived in some those States multiple times. I'm also leaving off my multiple deployments even though I was gone for a year(+) on some of those. By my Last count I've spent significant time in 35 of the 50 States and some 25(+) different countries.
I'm pretty much traveled out from my 27 years in the Army and don't really have a desire to move anymore. If I spend the rest of my days in North Carolina or eventually upstate South Carolina it will be fine with me....

Born in Daytona Beach, Florida when Dad was working there, he got transferred to Mobile, Alabama for a year and back to Daytona, Florida. My parents moved to Spartanburg, S.C.(Mom's Hometown) when I was 5. I have lived here since except for working in a few states for a number of months. I claim S.C. as my home since it's where I have lived most of my life. I am only a tourist in Florida so no claim to there.

Born, raised, and lived in Anderson County ( Pelzer area) for all of my 57 years so far. Except for the 6 years I spent in the Navy, and 3 or so of those years were in Charleston/Summerville. But I came straight back home when my service ended. Spent quite a few years working in Clemson on
different projects over the years.
