Edisto Inshore Fishing
Aug 3, 2022, 7:10 AM
|
|
Going to Edisto Beach Saturday and staying a week. Plan on fishing the whole time. Probably mix up some surf fishing (when the wife makes me go to the beach with the fam) and tooling around the creeks and rivers in my boat hunting for reds, trout, maybe a sheepshead or two, and maybe a big ol' tarpon or some flounder. Whatever is biting.
From what I heard from the guy who answered the phone at Edisto Watersports and Tackle, they only have mud minnows, and nobody on the island has live shrimp!?!?! I'm going to call the Marina at the end of the island a little bit later, but surely SOMEBODY has live shrimp!
I bought a casting net, but I see that being a real PITA, considering I've only tried once or twice. I guess I'll watch some youtube videos and see if I can master it in my pool or the lake before we leave.
We might also go out to the man-made reefs off the coast when my brother shows up with his larger boat mid-week.
Any advice, tactics, leads on live bait, etc?

I sent this to my bait shrimp partner a few years ago to teach him. You'll probably need to watch it a few times to get proficient. Or to find the net.

Same issue at Pawleys a few weeks ago. Only mud minnows.
We used artificial shrimp lure (Vudu) and did ok.

or is it just part of the gig? And where can you get those old school lawn chairs?
The people near us last week only surf fished early in the morning and in the evenings. The caught one shark when we were out there. That was it. They did know how to use a cast net and caught all kinds of little fishies though. One of the wives was a cutie, the rest were tanks.

I make the same observation about bass boat fisherman.
It's hot as a mo-fo out in a boat in summer. I can't imaging having fun being fully dressed in that heat on a shadeless platform and repeatedly just throwing a line out in the water. My first instinct is to crack a cold one and jump in the water.

were fishing from shore for sharks - around the side where the river channel comes out. One guy had a kayak and would carry the baited hook about halfway out in the channel and drop it, so way farther than you could cast. They caught a big shark, too, about 4' long. Pretty impressive compared to the 12-18" ones you usually see caught in the surf.

Re: Edisto Inshore Fishing

I fish 1.5 hours south of Edisto but my thoughts...
Have to use live bait this time of year. Shrimp are better than minnows. Water visibility is too poor for artificial lures. It's hot so the fishing is not great but is starting to get better (late fall - early spring is best inshore)
The shrimp are starting to run. Find a mud bank (no oysters) and cast mid-tide incoming at the marsh grass. They start to get in deep holes but you need a fishfinder to see them and have to know where to go. I'd stick with the bank.
Put a shrimp under an unweighted cork with carolina rig with 1 Oz sinker and 18" flouro leader. Set your depth to 2 feet and fish incoming tide at the marsh. Look for oysters and structures. That's where reds and flounder are. Sheepshead are on dock pilings but you need fiddler crabs and small hooks. Trout are deeper but most big ones are offshore until fall.
Don't fool with nearshore reefs. It's 30+ miles to deep enough water for grouper, snapper, triggerfish, etc.
Moon / tide is better early in the week than later.

That's what I've read... I think I'll try my hand at casting for shrimp, and if that doesn't work, I have a stockpile of Gulp! shrimp to try out. I'll probably grab some mud minnows as well. I know Red's go hard off of their sense of smell... maybe the Gulp! ones have enough scent to do the job. Any experience with them?

So mud bank = good for shrimp, and bad for fish... I read somewhere that a mud bank is a dead bank. Is this correct? I have a fish finder.

10-4. Do anything with popper corks? Can you use this same rig with mud minnows, if shrimp are not available? How about Gulp! scented shrimp... or DOA shrimp? How would you go about catching fiddler crabs, and is it worth the trouble? I read somewhere that trout are spawning this time of year in holes within eyesight of the ocean from low tide to mid tide... One of these fishing reports, I think.
Don't fool with nearshore reefs. It's 30+ miles to deep enough water for grouper, snapper, triggerfish, etc. noted

I went out with a guide in Ocracoke for reds. We fished off the rip rap bumping a ~3/4 white bucktail on the bottom...almost like worm fishing for bass but a lil faster. It worked, we caught about 12 reds.
I once caught a flounder on a 1/10 ned rig.
If I were you and had a boat....I'd prolly just throw a live fish on a big hook with a big rod and shark it out. I would think you would need to know exactly where to go to have much success with reds or flounder or trout.

Edisto Watersports and Tackle has mud minnows, they have no live bait, and nobody on the island has shrimp.
From what I've *read*, I could pull dead shrimp on carolina rigs, popping corks, etc. same as live shrimp and have goodish results. Surely that would be better than artificals, right?
Also some said take a DOA shrimp or other plastic shrimp on a jig-head and tip the hook with some dead skrimp.

Fiddlers are a PITA to catch unless you want to wade out into the pluff mud on an outgoing tide and bury a bicket to the lip for them to fall into then get out there before the tide comes up to retrive the bucket. Most tackle shops should sell them.
Blue crab works well for redfish bait too. You can chicken neck/string/net them to catch yourself or just buy a couple. Some seafood joints will even give you dead ones that they can't sell if you ask. Cut them into quarters and place on a large circle hook.

I have better luck with paddletail grubs (Saltwater Assassins) and Voodoo shrimp. Put artificials under a popping cork (like Cajun thunder). Try a bunch of different colors and see what works. Brighter colors usually work better in murky summer water.
Fish like structure and shrimp feed on mud banks. Plus, you can't throw a cast net on oysters...
Try the holes but I have 40 spots in a 10 mile stretch of river. If they're there you catch a cooler, if they aren't you shoot blanks. Hard to do if you aren't familiar with the area but they are running out on the quarter moon. If you see boats throwing then stop but you need a big heavy net with tape.
Same rig for all bait. You just want to be in the bottom of the marsh when the tides floods and the reds come up. Poppers for artificial unless you're casting a paddletail with jig head. Low tide try some of the deeper spots.
I buy fiddlers...too much work to dig for them. Sheepshead are more of a winter bite anyway.
Trout spawn in winter/spring. They are offshore now but that's just more of a pattern since the water is cooler. Down there they start to school up on structure a few miles off and move in later. Trout just aren't worth an offshore trip since you can catch 50 a day in November.

What size cast net?
Aug 3, 2022, 8:44 AM
|

Menhaden are much easier to sight cast for and can be used to target larger reds and trout. As others have said, shrimp hide either up near the grass or in deeper holes if you can find them. Depending on the clarity on your fish finder, they will look light a lot of "noise" in the bottom of said holes.
Tamale me if you have trouble finding a casting method you like. I have a killer one that requires not putting the net in your mouth and I throw up to a 12' net with it. Be glad to meat up and show you if necessary.

We will catch a bunch of finger mullet towards the end of summer and freeze them
Thaw them out and basically filet them and use that as bait. Works equal to live bait when there is no live bait to be had

Everything eats small mullet; if you can't catch any with a net, stop somewhere before getting to Edisto and get some frozen cut mullet; use on a Carolina rig.

for some flounder very low maintenance fishing right there but them mud minnows on the bottom with a carolina rig and maybe float one or two nearby and wait when you feel that sucker start, let him eat (up to 10 seconds, sounds weird I know, but it works) and THEN get the reel going.
All those rocks on the shore on Edisto Beach proper are perfect for surf fishing, happy wife, and actually catching dinner
