Final thoughts on "The Bridge" program...

Feb 14, 2018, 2:42 PM

Probably beating a dead horse. But I got caught up in dumping my feelings out in a response to an earlier post here:

https://www.tigernet.com/forum/message/Where-to-begin-23136384

So I just wanted to share my final thoughts (for anybody who cares)

I feel like The Bridge does a lot of good for a lot of people. As Clemson's profile and popularity has increased, so has the number of applicants...some more worthy than others.

Clemson isn't going to double in size, so unfortunately, they have to draw the line somewhere and some very worthy kids aren't going to make the cut...

Enter The Bridge program. I see this as Clemson's way of saying, "Hey, we like you, and we think you are a worthy candidate for Clemson. Unfortunately, there were a few more kids who applied with slightly better grades or test scores who were more worthy. Numbers are tight, but we want to give you a chance to chase your dream of being a Clemson Tiger. Put in some work, stick it out for a year, and come join us....We would love to see you with a Clemson degree in 4 years."

To those who oppose the Bridge....all I ask is, "why?"

Would you prefer that all the kids who got "Bridge'd" be flat-out declined? Do you look down on the Bridge program as if it is belittling to you or your child?

Clemson is tough to get into. Not everybody will get a chance. But the Bridge offers that chance to some....instead of looking at it as being slighted by Clemson, I think people should embrace the opportunity that is given to them. If not, go elsewhere and bloom where you are planted!

Happy Valentine's Day, errrbody....Go Tigers!

I currently have a son in the bridge program and it’s been great for him and he’s happy. I’m a second generation clemson grad and my wife is a third generation. I also give to iptay and the clemson fund. I do not feel as if we have been treated unfairly by clemson. Clemson is hard to get in to now. End of story.

The Bridge program makes room in the University for students who are less qualified than the Bridge students.

heard a 'Bridge' success story today

Feb 15, 2018, 6:52 PM

one of my wife's students called her (in happy tears, i might add) to say she had been accepted into the graduate school of her choice.... and into a program that is more difficult to get into than most U.S. medical schools

and the young lady was a 'Bridge Crosser' who had feared that designation would hurt her acceptance chances

My son accepted a bridge position.

We are glad he has the opportunity to finish at Clemson.

Somewhat bittersweet knowing 10-15 kids (and friends) with lesser qualifications were accepted. Even they are scratching their heads as to how Clemson decides. Happy for them as well as for my kid.

I have a thought on the Bridge Program as well. My cousin and I did not get in to Clemson even though both of us had over 1250 SATs and were both top 15 in our high school class. I personally know 3 people from my high school class that did not have the grades I did yet they got in. My theory is that Clemson doesn't always send the "fringe" kids to the Bridge Program. What they do is use your Clemson Legacy against you. My great grandfather was a charter member of IPTAY and was close friends with Frank Howard. My grandfather went here. My dad, uncle, and aunt went here...I could go on but the point is this, Clemson knew we were going to find a way to get there. They knew we wouldn't end up at USC or somewhere else. So they cut us out to allow others in that may not end up doing the Bridge and taking their money elsewhere. Now they get the fringe kid and the other kid that will definitely go.

Clemson has always had a bridge program even though it was never called by that name and the cost was nothing. It was well known that the freshman classes were the bottlenecks and the admissions counselors would tell you to go to Tri-County, make decent grades, and transfer in. Another advantage was transferring in credit hours rather than GPA. The difference now is Clemson decided to get in the game and offer a formal version that requires sharing a 4 bedroom apartment on campus and eating in the dining hall for $1000+ per month.

While it does suck not getting the full campus experience...

Bridge is better than getting admitted straight in.

Tricounty tech is much easier (most teachers want you to pass) making it very easy to make that 2.5 for automatic admittance.

The living situation is much better than a dorm (although I know the dorm expierence may be important to some) but you live in a 4 bedroom apartment with a nice living space. We have an oven, a big fridge and a grill outside. Plus we have a pool, hot tub and lazy river.

If you or your child got bridged, do not let them worry. They will get their Clemson degree at the same pace as anyone who got in.

I know Clemson freshman who are jealous they didn’t get bridged.

Actually next year the Bridge kids will not be living at Highpointe, they're moving to Lightsey Bridge or Calhoun Courts.

Certainly still better than a dorm, but a far cry from where they've been living.
