my wife is a CPA and I still do our chit on turbo tax. I'll never get a CPA to do my taxes unless I own multiple properties and have several sources of income

One fourth of the exam is tax
Apr 6, 2017, 11:29 AM
|

CPA's do a lot other than tax, unless they are specialized. Entry level accountants are expected to have a basic knowledge of all these areas, hence a four part CPA exam.
If you tax situation is complex enough to use a CPA, I would recommend using one that specializes in the tax area you need.

This
and the CPA exam is one of the hardest certification tests out there. Literally takes 6-9 months to pass the whole thing and if you fail one of the 4, even longer.

Working in account/finance, I've met more idiots with CPAs

than competent employees. I was taking the CMA (Certified Management Accountat) test with a buddy of mine who's a CPA. We took a class together for it and were working through it. I passed it easily, he failed. Kept failing the tests but eventually passed.
Test taking does not equate to anything other than memorizing answers for a short period of time.

My wife is a CPA and we still outsource our tax prep

Too many states. Too complex. And wife says she only knows corporate/SEC tax law, not personal.
My dad always said to marry a woman with complementing skills. I should have married Bob Vila instead.
