something's fishy with my electrician and in-cabinet puck

Apr 20, 2022, 10:19 AM

lights. It seems like he's lying. I've got 4 new small cabinets up at the ceiling with glass in the doors, and holes drilled in the top with romex in each ready to hook up surface mount puck lights. He says he's hooked up a lot of recessed ones like that, that have wires coming out the back and he hooks them up to the romex and pushes them in the hole. I've been googling, Lowes-ing, and Home Depot-ing, and it appears to me that 120 v direct wire pucks are rare, and what there are requires a proprietary junction box with their proprietary connectors. He says he doesn't cut off the connectors, nor use a junction box. "the cabinet guy" or somebody else supply the lights, and he doesn't know where to get them. I'm not much on code, but I think there's a reason I'm not finding lights like that.

I think at this point I need to hide a small junction box in the first cabinet so it's accessible, and run wires from it to the 4 lights in the 1 1/2" gap between the cabinet top and the ceiling (hidden by crown molding) and down through the existing holes. I'd prefer not to use the light company's junction box and connector wires, but I may have to.

This guy did some other work fine, but this situation is not good, I'm not inviting him back.

Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

check your smoke detector batteries often (or hire H8nusc®) and keep a fire extinguisher handy.

srs Are there transformers in the lights? Gotta drop that voltage somewhere . . . .

actually, there are 120v options with no transformers.

They go bad really quickly.

If you go with those you'll be replacing them every 6 months to 2 years.

The ones that have the external transformer are much more reliable.

a few Amazon reviews mention that.

but generally good reviews. I just want something similar that I can install myself in the current set up I have. Lutron dimmer switch is already wired into a lower cabinet. I want surface mount to put it right in front of the hole where the wire comes out. I'd put the juction box/transformer box behind the first light.

FBCoach is nearly a journeyman sparky at this point.

Dude, scrap the electrician. You don’t need wired lights up there. You can get a six pack of battery powered puck lights on Amazon that you can control w your phone for like $20.

A junction box or inside the fixture which acts like a junction box.
