FB Gurus: Main Thing You're Looking For Early vs. GA.?

emoji_events [6]

For me: The main thing I am looking for early in the game versus Georgia is "how we match up on the line of scrimmage"! This is for both sides of the ball. Skill position wise on offense and LB and back - we are even with them.
Just going on what I seem to recall( note: could be wrong here ) Georgia has recruited very well on the lines of scrimmage! We have as well on the DL - I wish Capehart was a go though with his size. Tre Williams has been getting many of the veterans attention as well as Ruke. Bresee and Davis are formidable no matter how good the Georgia OL is.

My main worry is of course our Achilles heel from last year a.k.a the offensive line! We do not have enough time between now and game time to lift more weights and do other things to get more physical - but it was missing last year! With the emphasis I am hearing about getting back to being a nastier more p'd off group - will serve the Tigers well!
1A - OL play.
1B - DL play.

I know I only asked for the main thing - but I would also throw in RB production on plays where a hole was provided. Note: all non-productive running plays aren't necessarily on the RB; but if it's blocked well; "how does this group do"?

And you? What will you be looking at the most early on for the Tigers?

TDs when Clemson has the ball, punts when UGA has the ball.

Seriously _ winning the big play, special team, penalties and turnover stats. Don’t think either offense will dominate. I think it will come down to fewest mistakes and 5-6 big plays.

Teams are evenly matched.

Not a guru by any stretch. But here it goes for me,

Interior OL - a lot of question marks going into the year with unproven talent and a need to step it up.

LT - can McFadden play longer than he is tall? Dude is great but doesn’t have the size. Can he use his length to make up for lack of size. If not, he’ll have trouble with guys like Nolan Smith coming off the edge with speed.

DL - is it what we think it is? If so, it could really be a boon for the overall D.

DBs - do we have some war daddy’s? We are going to need that out of the limited guys.

Hybrid guys - can Barrett Carter and Malcolm Greene have an impact as hybrid players?

RB - does Pace solidify that role? Can Shipley find a way to have an impact?

QB - will DJU have the command we have come to expect from that role? How does the QB2 look?

WR - can they stay healthy for the most part? If so, it’ll be a special group.

TEs - Davis/Galloway continue upward trajectories? Will Lay block?

Those are random thoughts that I’ll be looking for against JawJa and the first couple of games.

I’ve been optimistic over the last couple of years wrt Lynn J. But the flashes that I’ve seen with Pace makes me wonder if he is going to jump him. I’m sure Lynn J will still get his fair share of carriers. Then throw in Mafah and Shipley, and I’m with you. Not exactly sure how it’ll play out.

In any case, a ton of talent and that usually leads to competitive depth with some strong options at the top.

From my understanding, Pace and LJD will get the bulk of the touches/snaps for pass pro and between the tackles. Shipley's skill set mirror's CMC, so my guess is that they'll bring him out for swing passes and screens to get him in space. Until his pass pro is stellar, I don't think he'll be an every down back. That was Etienne's biggest weakness, and it's a major feature of this offense. Makes me miss Wayne Gallman, as he was wonderful at pass pro and picking up LB/DB blitzes.

I think we'll use Pace like ETN/LJD in their freshmen years. Shipley was also a ST specialist at Weddington, so I think he'll be used heavily in the return game.

Worried when we jump out to a 21-3 lead that we can’t put the game away because we can’t run it up the middle.

All or nothing offense makes it tough to salt the game away when Dabo pulls back the reigns after we get an early lead.

Dave Remmington, Dave Remmington , Dave Remmington.....Well, we had William Devane and a guy named Perry...And after the game they were interviewed and they said,"We whupped on that boy all night long". That is what I expect our Dline will do this year. If Trey W. and Ruke, and Capehart comes along, I can just imagine the difficulty the center and two guards will have if they have to go hard against those three for 3 or 4 plays, and then Tyler and Bresee come rolling in....I have full confidence that our DLine will be dominant this year. DOMINANT!

The Oline....I am more of a wait and see'er.....That is where the success of this season will be make or break. I may be wrong on this, but it just seems like last year, when we need to go deep at crucial times, the line's pass blocking did not hold up and Trevor had to bail....We have some frisbee catching dogs this year...So, give DJ what he needs and we are gonna roll!!!

Love it.
Great things some of which I hadn't thought about like the McFadden switch to LT. He was really good at RT; and is very athletic. He has a good weight to him and is still very nimble. His only size knock is him being 6'3 instead of 6'5 or better at LT! Athletically I have no doubts he can do it though. He is going against XT - who is in a "contract year" so to speak. Myles Murphy goes at him daily as well. Georgia may have equal talent; but hard to imagine better than those to.

Appreciate the responses!

Re: Awesome Answers!

Hearing about the success XT has had actually is one of the reasons I’ve given the lack of size thought for McFadden. Hopefully the success of XT hasn’t been a result of lack of size and the speed being able to get the edge.

In any case, I’m sure McFadden will find a way to leverage his athleticism in the role and the coaching staff will put him in situations to help him be successful. If they can build some depth with these young guys… watch out. The OL unit could end up being a strength. I’d love to see that develop.

Like some of you have said Im looking to see DJ get us off to a fast start by dropping dimes to our insanely talented wide receiver group. Oooh I am so ready for Ross to go off!! Then our nasty defense backing it up with stops and turnovers. Even if our offense takes a slight loss in production I think we have the talent to create the balance on both sides of the ball that we’ve had in years we’ve won the ship.

I think the differentiator will be in our tight end play. I’ll be watching to see how Jaylen Lay has improved because we need to get back to where we were in years past when we had Leggett. Even if our o line isn’t the best in the country we can at least throw some more wrenches into opposing schemes with getting our t ends actively involved.

Why wouldn’t our offense take a huge step forward this year? Ross, Collins, Ajou, Ladson are all healthy. LJ, Pace, etc. OL only could be improved. TE, Galloway plays, Lay…

I share the thought our OL is gonna have to prove themselves. They are going to have to consistently create running lanes, in addition to providing DJ sufficient pass protection to throw downfield. Our run blocking was frequently terrible last year and we are going to have to effectively run in order to effectively.

My two cents:
1) I will be watching the penalties, especially the false starts and holding calls. Good indicator of which team came better prepared/ coached.
2) Clemson coaching (Dabo/Elliot) usually start the season with bland, boring play book stuff. I don't think that will work against UGA.
3) and lastly, Clemson has had a tendency to start slow. I don't know ga tendency. But I think the first to lead by 2 touchdowns will win the game.

OL. We used to be a good not great team. People complained then about OL. We started competing for championships and OL is still a complaint. No matter what we do it seems people are concerned with the OL. I'm not sure how much is our OL play and how much is just habit about it. It does bother me that in short yardage situations we seem to get little or no push. Maybe that is due to run pass option. Who knows?

I tend to agree. The offensive staff is very good. My $0.02 would be to have more designed runs. Ironically against Georgia the RPO game is exactly what you will need though. They are very stout against the run.
One thing for certain if we can move the ball against Georgia on the ground, then nobody else should have a chance.

Here are the top matchups I'll be watching:

1) Justyn Ross vs. Tykee Smith - If he's 100% full go, Ross is by far the best offensive threat on Clemson's roster. Tykee Smith, a transfer in from WVU, is getting big time love as the best returning slot cover guy by PFF. There is a decided height advantage for Ross, so if he's winning 50/50 balls at a high rate that's not good news for the Dawgs.

2) Bryan Bresee vs. UGA IOL - Bresee has one of the quickest first steps for an interior DL in all of college ball. UGA's starting C and at least one G is still yet to be determined. How those three guys work together to block Bresee's pass rush will be a factor in JT Daniels success or lack thereof.

3) Jordan Davis vs. Clemson IOL - This is also a big time matchup, but it's implications are more for Clemson's run game than pass. If Clemson's inside zone run game is to be successful, they'll have to get push up front on Davis.

4) Myles Murphy vs. UGA LT - While Myles doesn't quite get the hype that Bresee does on Clemson's DL, IMO he's actually the better player of the two. He doesn't make the flash plays in the passing game quite as much, but he is a rock in the run game. UGA's LT will most likely be Jamaree Salyer who played that position last year, but his most natural spot is at guard. It is possible that UGA starts someone else at LT allowing Salyer to slide down, but that would be a risky move knowing Myles Murphy is there in game one.

5) Nolan Smith / Adam Anderson vs. Jordan McFadden / Walker Parks - Adam Anderson is the #1 returning Power 5 edge defender with 50 or more pass rush snaps in PFF's Pass Rush Productivity stat and Nolan Smith is #6. Anderson will mostly be rushing against Parks and Nolan mostly against McFadden. Success here by the Clemson tackles would go a long way toward keeping DJU clean.

6) James Cook / Kenny McIntosh vs. Baylon Spector / James Skalski - Cook and McIntosh are UGA's RBs that are most used in the passing game, and they will look to get them involved vs. Clemson's LBs.

Also Clemson TE's against the UGA LB's/SS. With Elliot now overseeing TE's, I'm hoping we attack the middle of the field A LOT more. Galloway and Allen (maybe Briningstool?) need to have a big game. Our boundary guys are gonna stretch the DB's out. The middle of the field should be open for the taking if Elliot can attack the UGA LB's that are weak in pass coverage.

We haven't had that threat since Leggett, and I'm hoping that changes with the dinosaur Pearman switching.

I wanna see if JT Daniels has any time to throw, and if his receivers are getting open. If he's not settled in the pocket and he's getting drilled, it's going to be a long night for him. The guy is not mobile. Losing George Pickens as their bail-out option was a big blow; Arik Gilbert was supposed to be his replacement but what we're seeing now with whatever is going on with Gilbert is hardly encouraging, and the myriad of banged-up UGA receivers (they were supposedly missing their top five guys at their scrimmage on Saturday) is not encouraging for them. They're also not really sure who their LT is and their C is banged up.

That is not good, as far as keeping Daniels - who again is not remotely mobile and who does have a tendency to take sacks and hold the ball too long - upright and vertical.

On the other side of the ball, UGA's got a rebuilt secondary that features a lot of talented transfers who have never played together...like our own Derion Kendrick. Their front seven is really stout and is going to be really tough to run against, but are they going to be able to hold up against the likes of Justyn Ross in those 1-on-1 situations? Dunno. If they can't they could be in trouble because with DJU you can draw your pass plays on longer paper. I don't see us completely frying them because of how good their front seven is...but I do think there's some mismatch issues that could get them burned for some big plays and those big plays could be key. In particular I think Ross is good for a couple of TD's minimum on his lonesome they just will not be able to stop.

I am a little worried UGA will be able to just line up and pound the ball, though I'm less worried about that if they can't throw. We'll stack the box. Still something to keep an eye on: can they run on us, at all, and beat us up physically? You know they're going to try like Ohio State did. They've got a ton of very good running backs like Zeus White and James Cook and they're running behind a very, very big OL.

As usual Q great answer.

I'm hoping that all the talk about being more physical will do the trick. Especially game one while everybody is healthy. I love what I have been hearing about Tre Williams.
I'm hoping that CapeHart can be healthy by game time. We will need depth to give guys a rest. Especially because it's going to be hot.

1 O-line and D-line. How can these not be #1 on everyone's list? If our O-line gets worked over early, a very bad omen.

2 The defense must NOT give up a huge play or two early on.

3 The secondary must hold up, particularly the safeties defending the long ball.

4 Can we run the ball. If not, play-calling must change quickly to adapt. We can't be satisfied with quick 3-and-outs just because the defense stifles UGA early.

5 DJ's touch and accuracy. He needs to avoid being too amped.

Are we rolling DJ out in the first half. He will roll out in the 2nd half in a close game. If we have to roll him out in the first half the coaches are making an adjustment they don't want to have to make (allows UGA to adjust at halftime).

biggest impact (easy to see early). Can we get consistent pressure with the front 4 and can we run the football. Sure, DJ needs to play well, and the safetys have to play better than last game last year, but running the football at a decent clip and pressure from the down linemen. If we have to send one extra on key downs, maybe not terrible but it can't be Ohio State all over again.

Score a TD on opening drive. Sustaining methodical drives not just scoring on the big play. Converting 3rd downs. Getting D off the field on 3rd downs.
