nothing in high definition stands up to anything that was black and white and only watchable when you put aluminum foil on your bunny ears.

I'm 59, and Andy was the best. Father Knows Best

was on par with Leave It To Beaver when it came to the episode message. Whereas most of the Andy Griffith Show episodes had a real message. Many involved the Andy- Opie relationship, but there were also many others with a real message about family and community.
The best from the black and white early 60's shows were, in my opinion...
1. Andy Griffith Show 2. #### Van Dyke Show 3. I Love Lucy 4. Gomer Pyle USMC (migrated to color before ending) 4. Leave It to Beaver 5. Father Knows Best 6. Mister Ed (Talking horse) 7. Dennis the Menace

My viewing lineup in the 50s included Dragnet, Highway Patrol, half hour Gunsmoke shows, The Life & Legend of Wyatt Earp, Burns & Allen, 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, You Bet Your Life, Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Our Miss Brooks, Have Gun Will Travel, Twilight Zone, What's My Line, The Bob Cummings Show (He made a TV spot for CU in the early 60s and had a nephew that went there).

Its amazing how many of those productions still run on TV. The Grit channel just started showing Wyatt Earp a couple of weeks ago. Watch Gunsmoke occasionally and the Twilight Zone. Could've added a few more like Laramie with famous composer Hoggy Carmichael.

We truly experienced the "Golden Age" of TV. A large number of shows were done before live audiences and some of the greatest impromptu moments occurred making them all the more entertaining!

Never forget one of the greatest moments was on You Bet Your Life. A male contestant telling about himself said he had 8 or 10 kids. Groucho Marx then said "I like my cigar too, but I take it out once in awhile." He was suspended for a few weeks. Really enjoyed his humor.

Andy Griffith but only the ones with Don Knotts

Then Father Knows Best. By the way the young lady on FKB went on to be a lesser character on Andy Griffith but she was against the role from the start and eventually quit. She later claimed she deserved a bigger part in the show as she felt the pharmacist role was beneath her. She was probably right.

I believe her character's name was Ellie. Now for a little more trivia, can you name "Father's" pet name for the youngest daughter Kathy?
