The NCAA is playing NIL/Portal just right…
May 6, 2022, 12:59 PM

Despite their efforts, the NCAA was unable to stop these two things from coming to pass. With that said, I think they are playing their hand the best they can. No need to fight this expensive battle, just stand back and watch the chaos for a couple years. Eventually, instead of having to fight to fix it, people will be begging them to fix it.
The NCAA deserves a little credit for this, I think.

Clemson fans will not like this approach because there is a worry that Clemson will fall off of the mountain before the system comes crashing down.

They have little faith in our coaching staff and athletic department. Their fear is really a fear of the unknown.

The Portal is all NCAA but NIL is way beyond the NCAA and they can do nothing about it.

When it crashes the NCAA will be the ones expected to clean it up. Who else will fix it? The govt is the one that has f’ed it up.

The portal, as originally designed, was to make the transfer

process easier, and was set up by the NCAA. The issue came later when the mandatory one year sit out was dropped. Couple this with NIL and we have the NIL/Portal issue. Something the NCAA is absolutely against.
Regarding your second point on NIL, we agree. NIL was forced on the NCAA, but rather than continue to fight it, which they could have done, they have opted to sit back a let public opinion drive the bus. Since NIL was driven by politics, public opinion matters.
What else?

Al they need to do is change the portal to if you transfer, instead of losing a year of eligibility, you lose a year of ability to bring in more NIL money.
Hey, they used to take a whole season from a player that transferred before graduating, why not hit the wallet instead? They could still play and have a scholarship (which is the more emphasized incentive to play college football ??) but they can’t be enticed with money.

Either one, NIL/Portal, without the other is not so bad...

but the combination has been devastating. To your point, if they just kept the mandatory sit out year in place, that would have also helped. Hindsight is 20/20 thought, had NIL been in place earlier, we may not have seen some of the other changes.

What’s to stop players from entering the portal every year? If they have a good year and the Nil money offered by other teams is substantial, why not go? If the Nil money is not there, they stay. It will become all out free agency every year.

This is what prevents a player from jumping every year.
1st transfer you don’t have to sit out. Transfer again then you are sitting.
As far as graduate transfers where you never had to sit out - I’m assuming the player still wouldn’t have to sit even if they used their one tine immediate eligibility transfer. Once again, I’m just spit balling on the graduate transfer rules remaining unchaingrd.
I don’t have time to look that graduate detail up because I’m about done with my morning p00p and have to flip on the bidet.

Re: Counter-intuitive means of battling the NIL arms race

The NCAA could put in rules that makes any school that offers NIL deals to guarantee that those deals will be paid in their entirety, regardless of whether the player (a) flunks out / quits the sport, (b) plays poorly / doesn't play, (c) transfers to another school.
If such a policy were instituted (the NCAA is protecting the rights of the student athlete; eliminating the chance that an insincere NIL deal would end up leaving the athlete high and dry), then the NCAA would be introducing an element of risk (a big element of risk) to the schools which pay the big NIL money.
(*) After a few such NIL deals don't work for the NIL madams, then the boosters will be sick of seeing their NIL ho's leaving for another school and still being on the hook to pay the NIL deal.
SUMMARY: Imposing an additional element of risk to the big NIL 'donors' will lead to a chilling of future such deals, thereby reducing the extremes of the NIL arms race.

The NCAA is in the mix with recruiting and they should start by getting the Boosters out of the recruiting process for high school players and portal players. Implement sanctions with "teeth" that are tied to the CFP, then the athletes will not be bought. Nothing says the CFP and NCAA can't work together.
Secondly, since the NCAA does fully control the portal, go back to requiring players to sit out one year if they enter the portal. Taking away the glitter and adding consequences will help reduce entrants and with tampering.

finally embrace the free enterprise system on the basis of meritocracy and not some good old boys's cigar club mantra. I know that I have always received extra compensation at my places of employment for both my talents in the work environment, as well as those out. It is a given that being extraordinarily good-looking like me gets you into upper management, but ability is still an important factor as well.

We don’t reward weaklings at my work or declare them heroes, we fire them. Works pretty well. NCAA should try it.
