The problem with fans (sorry kinda long)

As a member of the press for over 40 years, I made an assessment back in 1999 and it holds true today IMHO. The article talked about the one point of view that many fans tend to have - the "team colored" glasses view. I wrote about this in 1999 for The Oklahoman (OK newspaper) and the headline was "Fans Know What Coaches Know - But Don't Say it Out Loud."
In a nutshell, the article talked about how coaches are intimately aware of the the flaws in their players and team. They have to be. They know every aspect of a player before they sign them, and they keep stats and notes on every part of a player's strengths and weaknesses along the way. They discuss these issues regularly as a coaching staff and plan on how to improve them.
HOWEVER, when a fan points out those same weaknesses of a player or team, other fans are quick to jump to the team's defense. They criticize the person for pointing out the very things the coaches are discussing in private. On fan boards and "discussion" forums, phrases like "traitor" are hurled at posters in an attempt to defend their beloved team. The article concluded with this statement: "I'd love to take all the ridiculously rose-colored glass fans on chat boards and make them flies on the walls of most coaches meetings. Lets see how quick they are to hurl the same degrading insults and vitriol at the coaches for saying the same things their fellow posters are insulted for saying about their favorite team."
In summary... my goal of the article was to say "grow the F up, and have constructive discussions about strengths and weaknesses of your team." If you can't handle that, maybe you don't deserve to have a login to any public discussion accounts.

I can't speak for anyone, and I won't try, but as a 6 decade Clemson Tiger fan, it hurts when I hear fans say ugly things about one, or any of our players. Some aren't as good as others, and I'm OK with that discussion, but the ugly name calling of a player that our coaches asked, with some pleaded for them to come to Clemson. Saying, making ugly remarks about them shows that those people are really bad fans that Tiger nation don't need!!!!

Thank you. For a sport’s “journalist” to publicly disparage a team or players is one thing, and it should be different when “fans” do so. A fan should be able to make constructive comments about poor play without truly hurtful comments.

I agree. Constructive discussions of strengths and weaknesses can be just that - constructive. What I don’t like to see is fans calling players or coaches names or belittling them on a personal level or wishing ill will or injury on them. I’ve always thought a complaint accompanied by a suggested legitimate solution was good for discussion. A mean-spirited or or degrading comment or complaint is rarely constructive. And I’ve also noticed the guy that has to be perceived as the smartest person in the room rarely is.

The main problem is the fans may see some of the "weaknesses" of players but do not know the game of football well enough to properly talk about how each part works. Most of these writers have not played the game above little league level and do not understand the timing of how each player must work and move to make the whole thing run properly. Until one has spent hours in the dust, mud, and whatever else is on the field, this person cannot understand the minutia of the game. That is what makes
watching Hunter run pass routes so much fun.

I see a large difference between being an irrational sports fan and an unabashed homer, versus someone who obtains their life views through dictation by a political party or even religion.
For fans, sports are entertainment and a way for people to blow off steam. Every fan has their own way to to enjoy the game and as long as they aren’t punching people out in the stands or ruining the game for others, live and let live.
Anonymous fans screaming into the ether on a message board means absolutely nothing.
Don’t take it so personally. No offense, but your article didn’t change anything 20 years ago and it’s not going to today either. I’d focus on other aspects of your career to draw pride from.
