Are we now through with the "Bench DJ, insert Taisun" posts?

Nov 7, 2021, 9:19 AM

I can't see anything he could do to help the offense. When he is in, there is no passing threat so although he may bust a few runs early when he gets in, the defense just stacks the box as there is no downfield threat and we are stopped.

Certainly should be. DJ is getting better.

Agreed. DJ ain't great, but he's the best we got.

He is getting better and gives us our best chance to win.

I thought TP played well considering the lack of snaps all

year. He actually is a good running threat, which opens things up. He brought a different element to the game and helped DJ settle down and will only get better with more reps.

I would like to see him get in the game more often for those reasons.

I like what they have done bringing in TP as a change of pace for 1-2 plays. The defense seems to be out of position a good bit and we usually get a decent 7-10 yard chunk play off of TP running or him handing off when the defense thinks he is running.
However if he is left in there the defense adjusts.. stacks the box, then he has to throw and that hasnt been great so far.

I think some short pass plays in TP s package would insert a little more mystery as to what play he will run

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True but did you see the out route pass TP threw yesterday?

Nov 7, 2021, 9:59 AM

Absolutely not a good passer even at short range.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1 rep after zero warm up. Surely DJ has erred similarly.

Nov 7, 2021, 10:20 AM

Lets get him some game reps and get him ready to go in when DJ gets dinged up like he is.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fair enough

Nov 7, 2021, 10:30 AM

but I still don't think he's a great passer or a good QB, really. Just one man's opinion though.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree, but you can say that about our starter as well.

Nov 7, 2021, 10:35 AM

The QB room is down this year. We need to figure out ways to get more efficiency out of our offense. Plus, Wake is susceptible to the QB run.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Think DO nailed it a few posts down. Lack of development.***

I like this take Clint. I’m tired of the “bench DJ” posts every time he does anything wrong. I do think he gives our team the best chance to win more consistently than TP. But I also think using TP in some packages periodically can be a good thing. And however fragile folks think DJ is, him being out for a few plays doesn’t seem to cause him any problems when he comes back in. If anything he seems to respond in a positive way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree. DJ is not a good QB and may never be

Nov 7, 2021, 9:56 AM

but overall better than TP from what I've seen minus a few QB scrambles.

The staff whiffed on evaluating TP, imho. Years in the program and the guy struggles with the simplest of passes.

We've discussed this QB room at nauseam, but we have a serious lack of talent and building this room isn't a problem that started this year.

I don't agree. It's not a lack of talent. It's a complete lack of coaching and development. People don't seem to want to talk about the elephant in the room given his recent heroism, but no matter how good of a person Streeter might be, he has no business working with quarterbacks. I have 0 idea why we have objectively our worst QB in history trying to develop NFL quarterbacks. But if you look at DJ or Taisun, they were better passers mechanically in high school. Here's Taisun right here. He's still a run-first guy, but he was more accurate in high school than he is now. That blame rests entirely on the coaches.

Well, watching that was depressing.

Nov 7, 2021, 10:35 AM

maybe you're right. This off-season should be interesting, to say the least.

Well, from watching the high school highlight reel it shows he's runner and short to medium range passer. His passing at Clemson has not improved. Obviously he has less time to throw and tighter windows than that small time program he came from but still, more regression than improvement. Point taken.

The bench DJ crowd assumed that other QBs on the roster could pass the ball or they wouldn't be on the team.

Appears TP can't which is either an evaluation issue or a development issue.

There's no excuse for not having a competent backup even if it means picking up a guy from the portal with one year left who's happy to be a backup on what was thought to be a championship caliber team.

TP should not start over DJ, however, on the last drive before the kneel down he should have been in the game. We were running and everyone knew it. DJ couldn’t run the read option with his knee. So if running all three plays was the plan we should have had TP in for that reason alone. Maybe it gives us the opportunity for a first down.

Mixed Feelings

Nov 7, 2021, 9:41 AM

I’d love to be able to say “put in the backup” and him play like a 5 Star QB. I get that he’s got to execute, but they need to be giving him (and the whole room) the same attention/guidance that DJ gets to be the best version of themselves.

I know the OP is talking about detractors, but the root of the sentiment is still there: the QB position is too important to rely on hope that they will get better. Try everything until the desired result is achieved.

Re: Are we now through with the "Bench DJ, insert Taisun" posts?

I fully agree DJ is our quarterback. I do not claim to have any knowledge about coaching, but I hope bringing TP in for some plays will help DJ feel a little less pressure. Maybe knowing someone else will share the responsibility will help him relax and feel more confident in his ability.

as bad as he looked, we should have found an emergency QB in the portal in case DJ got injured even when we thought he was going to be good.

Re: Are we now through with the "Bench DJ, insert Taisun" posts?

I insisted DJ be benched several times and still do advise it. It is a standard practice to give a QB sideline coaching and real-time adjustments at game speed. You see a guy miss 2-3 reads and throw a pick and such, you put the sub in and call 4 downs of ###### and coach him up. Ol Ball coach did that alot at florida. When ya got a young QB ya gotta stay in his ear constantly and get him over the hump of feeling like being pulled is a negative. I am happy to see DJ come back in after being pulled and be refocused. Dude is a good guy and great teammate, and it looks like he was hesitant to step up and command due to his lack of experience, but I do believe that is turning...he so obviously has an incredibly high ceiling, I think he will get there and do so alot sooner than guys like Joe Burrough and Kenny Picket who matured as seniors.

Yep, but are our 3rd and 4th QB options really worse than TP? Or did our best #2 QB's transfer?

Re: Are we now through with the "Bench DJ, insert Taisun" posts?

We really don't have any options do we?

Probably until next game.***
