get a kidney infection? I am 73 and am not aware of ever having had one. What are the symptoms and hazards? Thanks.

My father had one at 17 and spent a couple months in the hospital. He was perfectly healthy otherwise and never had it happen again. Ended up being what killed him, 65 years later

Sorry, not an MD, but have spent time caring for a family member with kidney stones. Soft drinks and sports drinks are not the best choices for anyone who may have a tendency to develop stones. Gatorade is however, still excellent for pouring over the coach just before the trophy presentation.

You sound just like my Dad and sister with the kidney stones. I am sorry you have to go through that.
I have heard stones or infection. Could be both....those stones can cause infection.

+1 for being 73 and never having one. I've been around a few males (not too bad on females if caught early) that had them and they will absolutely knock you to your knees. Literally. Not really serious per se but if they're big enough they explode them but can still be painful to pass. Not sure what happened to BB. It can cause severe fever and the worst back pain imaginable. Only morphine can help a little. I read it as blood showed up in his kidneys and that's consistent with stones.

He did have stones correct? Kidney stones peak in our 50’s but can occur in young folks in their 20’s. Dehydration is a risk factor. Stones can block urine flow and predispose us to infections.

I am an MD. It is likely an infection due to kidney stones, he is correct. In a male, especially a young healthy male, it takes a secondary reason to get a kidney infection. Most common causewould be a kidney stone.

I thought last time I read something it was kidney stones. Two different things though you can have a kidney infection with kidney stones. It is a bit unusual for a young healthy male to get a kidney infection. But it does happen. If it’s kidney stones it could be hereditary and possibly dehydrated. If it’s uti I’m not sure. But I do know this, his immune system could be down because he’s been through a lot lately and under alot of stress. He lost his sister for goodness sake. But even then some people are more prone to urinary tract infections than others.

And as far as your questions typical symptoms could be burning with urination, having to go more frequently than normal, not being able to go much when you do, for an actual kidney infection vs lower uti can have low back pain and fever. As for the hazards not sure if you are meaning to cause one or if you have one how is it dangerous? Any infection in the right setting could cause sepsis, infection in your bloodstream causing severe illness up to and including death. In elderly people especially if can cause delirium.

Do we know if it was indeed a real kidney infection?
Kidney infections in males are much less common. The length of the male urethra 'protects' the upper urinary (kidney and ureter), whereas the female urethra is much shorter and is prone to allowing bacteria to go upstream and infect the kidney (pyelonephritis), which is a serious condition but usually easily treated, barring any unusual underlying conditions. Bladder infections in males, for the same reasons, are very rare, but common in women.
People can be quite ill with a true kidney infection: high temp, shaking chills, myalgias, etc. This is due to bacteria circulating in the blood stream, commonly called Sepsis. However, treatment can quickly improve the condition of the patient.
Kidney stones are common in both sexes, especially in the warmer states, due to dehydration which allows calcium to precipitate out of the urine and cause a stone to form. A large stone can conceivably block the ureter and cause a kidney infection upstream, but this is uncommon.

I had a couple of them years ago and could barely sit upright. Also, I ended up with an infection which is also painful.

There are multiple types of stones and stones of different sizes therefore there are multiple treatments and approaches. They seem to be in the " wait and see " phase which would indicate they're most likely smaller stones that they believe he can pass on his own. With a certain type of stone ( uric acid stone ) that can be dissolved with medication. They send you home with a strainer to urinate in and return the fragments to your Dr for analysis to know how to proceed. If that proves unsuccessful or for larger stones a lithotripsy can be performed ( shock waves to break the stone apart ). This would necessitate a longer recovery time. The last one I passed was about the size of a tic tac and resembled a shard of glass ( cysteine).
Doctors recommended I drink plenty of water and lemonade. No soft drinks or any drink dark in color. Coffee was ok. Cranberry juice etc.

If he had kidney stones which seems to be common thought then he likely got kidney infection due to 2 reasons. First being the inability to evacuate his bladder fully therefore bacterial growth in bladder creeps to kidneys. Same is true if he has an enlarged prostate as well where he doesn't fully evacuate his bladder regularly enough especially if he is dehydrated where he doesn't go regularly enough therefore he allows bacterial growth.
There are a couple treatable STDs that can cause the same results for similar reasons especially if it burns too bad to urinate that he only removes enough for comfort and not total evacuation. There is also a bacteria/amoeba carried by women that could be classified as STD the can restrict flow and cause both kidney and testicular irritation and infection.
Almost all of these are treated with the same antibiotics. Typically longer teem treatment but none of these would have figured to have lost time. There are other causes but these are most common. Another is if he has been eating a lot of NSAIDS that thin blood substantially. Pain relievers can cause damage that with thin blood allows leakage and allows bacterial interface points within the kidney.
Then while those are the easy ones, diet, stress, physical damage cam all add factors. I had it one time right out of college due to graduation parties for days and to keep going we drank Red Bull and Vodka to keep our week long party going and due to alcohol, dehydration, caffeine and Vit B abuse, I ended up with a horrible kidney infection that put me in bed due to pain for like 5 days. But hey, it was a great party!!

Worked with a guy that had them. Never saw him without a BoJangles iced tea. Dr told him that was probably it because of the oxylate in tea.

They are little prickly hard stones and the blood comes when the stones are moving. If it’s too large to pass they will either need to go up and get it or try to crush it.
Had a prostate infection probably around 20 years of age and that is no fun as well. Felt the constant urge to urinate but nothing ever really happened. Starts messing with your mind to be honest. 3 months of antibiotics to get past that ordeal. Never been a big doctor guy but if things don’t feel right or work like they should it is worth getting checked out for sure.
On Bresee I am thinking he has not yet passed the stone. Hoping it’s nothing more serious than that.

It can cause an obstruction which can affect his kidney function and lead to significant issues that are too complicated to write here. It's call an obstructing uropathy. That's one thing stones can cause. Age is not a prerequisite to stones. Can be genetically caused.
