Latest on proposed ACC football schedule changes

Former Clemson and current Miami AD Dan Radakovich told reporters today at the ACC spring meetings that the league is favoring three permanent opponents and rotating the other five games without divisions coming up (2023 at the earliest). They are consulting ESPN now on that change.

Having permanent opponents is stupid.

If two ACC schools who are rivals want to work that out with the conference schedulers, that’s fine. But don’t force other teams to have rivals if they don’t exist within the confines of the ACC.

Okay let's do a little spitballin':
Clem: FSU, Georgia Tech, UVA
GT: CU, VT, Miami
FSU: CU, Miami, UVA
Miami: FSU, GT, VT
VT: UVA, GT, Miami
UVA: VT, FSU, CU
UNC: Duke, Wake, NCSU
NCSU: UNC, Duke, Wake
Duke: Wake, UNC, NCSU
Wake: UNC, NCSU, Duke
Pitt: BC, Syracuse, LOU
BC: Syracuse, LOU, Pitt
Syracuse: Pitt, BC, LOU
LOU: BC, Pitt, Syracuse
Basically, three groups that have their own little round robins. Keeps old school rivalries intact, along with respecting old setups (old Big East are together, old ACC are together, Tobacco Road together) I'm open to criticism and suggestions. Just me pulling it out of my rear-end.

You did a good job, I originally thought NC St would be one of ours, but you are right they probably would play the 3 state schools and good job keeping old Big East and ACC schools grouped together.

Yeah, I figured given they're doing 3 year round opponents, it just makes sense to do a group of 6 teams intermeshed, and then two groups of 4 that are essentially old school rivalries. It makes way more sense to have NCSU in the old Tobacco Road group, as they rarely play Duke and Wake now can play Carolina every year.
I would have liked to use NCSU as one of ours, and it could work flipping them with UVA, potentially. But I have UVA in the group with us since they're one of the last remaining non NC old ACC programs left (as SCar and Maryland left). Plus, they have a trophy game with FSU every year, the Jefferson-Eppes Trophy.
GT with us, VT, and Miami made sense, as the GT-Miami series is dead even at 13-13. Battle of the Techs needs to stay yearly, and obviously UVA-VT has to stay. Then, I know the old Big East teams from up north all still hate each other, so that just made sense to keep those together. I was toying around between swapping Louisville and UVA, but I imagine Louisville would prefer to play their old Big East foes.

Louisville was only in the Big East like a season or two weren't they? Weren't they in Conference USA? I'm thinking they really didn't have a chance to form rivalries with many of the old Big East schools that left for the ACC.

OK after further research they joined the Big East in 2005 around the time BC, VT and Miami left so they played Syracuse and Pitt for about 7 years.

the Heels & Cavs might want to preserve that.
I see ours being FSU, GT, & NC St
UNC keeping NC State, Duke, & UVA
Then going from there. But who the heck knows at this rate

Yeah, I get including NC State with us. But from what I've heard from most State fans, is that they want to go back to playing Duke regularly, so I thought it made the most sense to have the four Tobacco Road schools grouped together.
I'm not sure if UNC favors having UVA over Wake in their yearly matchups. I know there's no love lost between Wake and Carolina, and there's a reason why they added a "non-conference" series between the two, as they hadn't played often enough for either fan base's taste. Having lived in W-S myself, I think Wake would prefer being in the Tobacco Road group than having us or Louisville as part of their yearly opponents.
UVA is kind of the odd man out, given they have long standing rivalries with VT, UNC, and FSU. It's hard to include all three given UNC's long term rivalries with the other NC schools.
The gist for Clemson is that we need to have FSU and GT as 2 out of 3 yearly opponents. The third isn't that important to me, given that we'd play someone like NCSU every other year anyway.
Just my .02, obviously the Conference will do whatever the Conference does.

This has been my take on 3 annuals per program.

It actually starts with UNC as, of all the league teams, they have 3 100+ year rivalries going, and if there's anything that makes college football what it is, it's tradition. I don't believe that keeping all the NC teams together would be the ACC's way forward. And considering how the ACC initially devised divisions, I can see something like this playing out.
UNC - NC State, Duke, UVA
Clem - Ga Tech, NC State, FSU
FSU - Miami, Clemson, Syracuse (Cuse, BC, and Pitt will want to play Fla schools more regularly for recruiting)
Miami - FSU, BC, Pitt
Ga Tech - Clemson, Duke, Louisville (I-75 and city status)
NC State - UNC, Wake, Clemson
Duke - UNC, Wake, Ga Tech
Wake - NC State, Duke, Louisville
UVA - Va Tech, UNC, BC
Va Tech - UVA, Pitt, Louisville (KY is next door - this is a potential rivalry strangled by divisions)
Pitt - Syracuse, Va Tech, Miami (The pro stadium teams should be on each other's annual schedule)
BC - Syracuse, Miami, UVA
Syracuse - BC, Pitt, FSU
I will add that just about any annual 3-game schedule plus 5 rotating would be superior to today's division structure.
I would also hope that the schedule wouldn't be the same 5 others for two years then switch, that we would instead stagger it where 2 or 3 of one grouping is paired with 2 or 3 of the other and worked into everyone's schedule that way. That way our league schedule would change slightly every year instead of the same for two years and then the same again for the next two.
Go Tigers!

Consulting ESPN lol. I heard a guy on sports talk radio speculating that ESPN is in full support of NIL and the portal. They want to expand the playoff and they want as many big name or big market teams in it as possible. NIL and the portal makes this easier. Hard to get in as much detail in print but the guy made a ton of sense.

The permanent opponents kind of get old after a while, especially in the current system. The math works out and schedules are much improved with this proposal. Cant beat home and and home with every team over 4 year period.

With a 14-team league it creates the perfect scheduling balance for an 8-game conference slate.
We've shown that 9 conference games will come at the expense of quality OOC games considering our annual with SCar. Adding an extra ACC game to anyone's schedule doesn't necessarily enhance what we have to offer our broadcast partner. Freeing up our programs to play one another more often does, though. This format achieves that.

Because it allows the ACC to keep the most appealing match ups and rivalries in tact. Better inventory for TV to have us playing FSU annually versus an s extra game here or there with Pitt.

I'm all for tradition but why are we glued to GT?
May 11, 2022, 1:19 PM

I am fine with playing them every couple of years. If I were creating a list ranking the conference members in order of my personal preference for permanent rivals, GT would be in the bottom 3...or at least the bottom 5. Only teams giving them a run for the bottom of my list would be Duke, Miami and Syracuse.
If GT is considered our #1 conference rival, who would you like to cultivate a rivalry with to eventually knock them out of that top spot? For me, it would be FSU, Louisville or VT.
