Cade

Dec 1, 2022, 1:11 PM

If DJU transfers out and Cade isn't ready to start, we need to find a QB in the portal. Looking at the list of candidates so far...

Jeff Sims, Georgia Tech
Cade McNamara, Michigan

That's it. I wouldn't offer anyone else. It's still early though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We've also got a pretty good QB coming in this year...

Dec 1, 2022, 1:12 PM

hopefully he'll be closer to ready than not.

If our coaching staff can't develop Cade, then that's two 5 star QBs they've screwed up. I'd be worried about this staff with Vizzina. I'm hoping DJU was just a miss.

Look at our past QB's. I would say they have developed pretty well.

Really?

Dec 1, 2022, 1:26 PM

Didn't both Deshaun and Trevor seemingly regress in their 2nd year as a starter? People in 2016 were talking here about "what's wrong with Deshaun" during the first half of the season. Trevor was the favorite to win the Heisman coming into 2019 off a 15-0 year but threw a ton of interceptions in the first half of the season.

What Clemson QB has actually improved during his time here? The last one I can remember was Tajh from 2010 to 2011, and that was with Chad Morris as QB coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No...

Dec 1, 2022, 1:35 PM

They did not regress as many would have you believe. If you cherry pick stats, you can make it seem that way, but they both improved, tremendously in some areas, based on various metrics. Don't be swayed by those who hope you are too lazy to use google.

IMO, Trevor was as good his first year as his last. I saw NO development.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are you sure about that 2000?

Dec 2, 2022, 6:05 PM [ in reply to Re: We've also got a pretty good QB coming in this year... ]

Trevor didn't degrees in 2019?? I remember that year very well. Trevor was still very good, but that season got off to a sluggish start. I'm going to give Trevor some slack in 2020 since he lost some good recivers. But that doesn't explain all the Ints. DW4's freshman year was a little hard to judge since he was injured most of it, but I believe he was way more dominant in 2015 than 2016. So many close games against garbage teams (Troy, NC State, Pitt). After Pitt loss he did seem to step it up and played well in the playoffs. Kelley Bryant? Was Bryant as good in 2018 as he was in 2017? DJ? Was DJ as good in 2021 as he was in 2020?

I'm been questioning the QB development for years. Could it just be as simple as poor coaching hidden by generational talent?

Re: We've also got a pretty good QB coming in this year...

Dec 1, 2022, 1:24 PM [ in reply to Re: We've also got a pretty good QB coming in this year... ]

I am worried about Cade's development as well. The fact that he hasn't taken over as the starter is concerning. Dabo pulled the trigger with Deshaun and Trevor because they were clearly better than Cole and KB. It feels like Cade isn't better than DJ, which is why he isn't the starter. If that's true, then Cade is closer to Hunter Johnson than he is to Deshaun and Trevor.

Missing on back to back 5 star QBs would be devastating. Clemson nation might not be able to handle it.

Occam's Razor...the simplest solution is the preferred solution. All the crazy theories being floated around are hogwash imo. I too believe Cade just isn't ready and that's why the change hasn't happened. It's not a knock on Cade bc he's just a freshman. Deshaun and Trevor are aberrations and should not be used for comparison. 1 is already a top 5 QB or was before this mess and Trevor is probably on his way to that status. Those guys don't grow on trees. I believe Dabo is handcuffed at the moment.

Dec 1, 2022, 5:01 PM [ in reply to Re: We've also got a pretty good QB coming in this year... ]

mind, although I don't remember if both were 5-star. Chase Brice as well, although he seemed to develop nicely over time at other places.

I think part of it is just that quarterback evaluations are just tough. Think back to Randy Anderson, Billy Luckie, Willie Simmons, Willie Korn.

Re: More than two. Hunter Johnson and Zerrick Cooper come to

Dec 1, 2022, 5:33 PM

Hunter was a 5, Cooper was a low 4 i believe. Gosh Billie Luckie....name i haven't heard in a while. He was gonna be the game changer for Clemson in those early lean years. Also thought Simmons was gonna be the guy especially after that UNC game. Hard to evaluate Korn bc he got hurt and was never the same. Barely remember Anderson.

Re: We've also got a pretty good QB coming in this year...

Dec 1, 2022, 1:20 PM [ in reply to We've also got a pretty good QB coming in this year... ]

I wouldn't take the risk. We've signed seven 5 star QBs under Dabo. Only 2 of them lived up to the hype (DW4 & TL16). Tajh was mediocre but had incredible WRs with a newer offensive scheme. Hunter Johnson and DJ were busts. It's still too early to say with Cade, but if he's not ready in year 2, we can't afford to run the risk of whether Vizzina is or isn't. Odds are, Vizzina won't be ready like Deshaun and Trevor were.

Sims and McNamara likely only play one more year. Both have NFL potential. Cade and Vizzina can afford to sit another year to start behind a veteran.

Leon,

It is hard to argue against your position, but I wonder if we can attract a top level transfer QB given our offensive limitations. Surely there are other schools that give your QBs a better chance to display their skills to the NFL.

Dec 2, 2022, 5:21 PM [ in reply to We've also got a pretty good QB coming in this year... ]

Many on Tnet are stating top 2021 h.s. QB Cade Klubnik (MVP for multiple Texas 6A championships, state relay track champ, MVP and Most Accurate of Elite 11) is not capable to play this year. And yet, I keep reading Vizzina will be ready to compete for starting QB as a true freshman next year when Vizzina is 3-7, 1-5 in division, and has lost 5 in a row. What gives Tnet? Any research?

Re: Cade

Dec 1, 2022, 2:17 PM

If a true Freshman is our plan for a backup next year, we're in the same boat we're in now with Cade. This is what the transfer portal is doing to top schools. If you recruit 5 stars, they don't want to sit. If your backups are 3 stars, chances are they can't compete and want to transfer too.

Dec 1, 2022, 2:29 PM [ in reply to Re: McNamara had season ending surgery, anyone have a ]

McNamara lost his starting position at Michigan because he wasn't an effective runner and McCarthy was. McNamara, who is as very good pocket passer, probably wouldn't fit our current system. Of the two, I'd go with Simms. He seems more like Kelly Bryant than Deshawn Watson, but he is still the best choice available if Cade isn't going to be what we all thought he would be. I still think Cade hasn't had a fair chance to prove himself, but that discussion is for another thread.

Re: Gaslighting is "Cade ain't ready yet"

Dec 1, 2022, 1:39 PM

"Cade ain't ready yet" is just repeating Dabo's gaslighting talk. It is a direct reflection on Dabo and his staff's ability to coach. A lot of folks are tired of hearing "Cade ain't ready yet", but haven't linked the comment to ongoing systemic failures of the coaching staff. I know one RB that spoke his mind about the coaching failures after the greatest loss in the last 8-years.

Dec 1, 2022, 2:34 PM

Yeah, seems the money is pretty good if one can ingratiate oneself with Dabo (not intended to be a knock on Mr. Swinney, just an observation - I think Dabo has a blind spot borne out of good intentions).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Gaslighting is "Cade ain't ready yet"

Dec 1, 2022, 3:56 PM [ in reply to Re: Gaslighting is "Cade ain't ready yet" ]

This response has hit on a lot of what I believe is going on now. If DJU isn't the man, then Dabo and his staff have failed to get it right. If the new coordinators aren't right for the job, then Dabo didn't get it right. I'm not trying to throw shade on Dabo and I truly think that he is a great coach and a great guy, but having to admit to failures in the program can be very personal to some people and I think that makes change difficult for him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cade

Dec 1, 2022, 3:17 PM

Can anyone explain to me how "Cade isn't ready?" We've seen him come in a handful of times this year and it's been rather inconclusive. Imagine if he had been our go-to when DJ started showing signs of old DJ during the Furman game & had spent this entire season gaining reps and experience. Heck to at least be named starter for a game and have a week to prep and get his mind battle ready for a start is an absolute luxury he was never afforded.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We don't know...

Dec 1, 2022, 3:20 PM

other than coaches seem to indicate that. And they see him in practice, in the film room, in the locker room, etc... We see none of that.

Dec 2, 2022, 5:05 PM [ in reply to Re: Cade ]

Then somehow both Cade and DJ have gotten a lot worse as the season has progressed? Pure gaslighting! Just like the DJ for Heisman fraud each year. What BS! Dabo's played the ROY bus gaslighting con man character one too many times, and he still gets paid $1million a game to attempt to fool everyone? Dabo's time to come to Jesus and reset his career is quickly arriving, or the youth pastor from Alabama is going to flame out - hopefully not what any of us want to witness.
