Jay Guillermo Coaching @ WCU could use him here

Sep 7, 2021, 2:39 PM

Might be time to figure the future on oline coaching, the thing about Guillermo he was mean and tough!

Definitely. But can he recruit and develop players?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly.

We need fresh eyes. NO ONE that played or coached beside the current position coach.

Whether from inside or outside the program, we need people who know how to recruit and develop, and, like CBV, be dynamos on game day. CTE AND CRC seem like great guys, but a little sedate IMHO. I could be totally wrong here.

Isn't that why we brought Thomas Austin back?

If we can’t just impart that hit them in the mouth mental toughness that he had that’s a start, recruiting hasn’t been terrible we just haven’t developed what we have .

Our offensive recruiting in general does seem to be in decline a little , the others kind of use our system - and schemes against us with the recruits. Venables kind of is the bright spot these days .

Thomas Austin did not leave Georgia State as a line coach...

To simply be an analyst. He will be brought on board soon. Maybe sooner than expected if things can be arranged....if civid hadn't messed up last season, he would have probably been coaching this season. Trust Dabo to do things the right way at the right time.

Believe Guillermo is now @ Carson Newman with coaching change at WCU.

He is what you want from a olineman.

Outside perspective , not more yes men trained under the current strategy that obviously isn’t working. I appreciate wanting to have old players of course, but it’s pretty obvious we’re way too stale. New blood seems more likely to help solve that than someone coached in the same flawed system

Maybe we can hit a home run like we did with Venables , I don’t think the change from Caldwell will be that major of an issue with his age considered He may retire or step down after the season. Just not a lot of line coaches available that fit the program morals, and have the ability and availability to step in. Our recruiting has leaned towards the more athletic lineman with the offense we run not necessarily the big uglys . It may be time to pattern a little more of a Pro Style line and offensive scheme .

No. Hard pass!

We don’t need to hire anymore former players or promote from within. This program needs a look from the outside that’s not going to just validate what’s already being done. Obviously when it comes to the offensive line, we need to change what’s being done here.

Agree with that sentiment.

First off I did not ever play or coach football so my only qualifications are that I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express on several occasions.

That being said, I totally agree on hiring new blood when the time comes and getting a fresh perspective. If you suspect there is a problem with the OL coaching approach of the existing staff, why would you replace the OL coach with somebody who came up in that same system? Makes absolutely no sense unless you are just too stubborn and close minded to think that maybe there is a better way to approach things.

I don't know whether the issue is Caldwell or some sort of practice philosophy that puts our guys at a disadvantage or the old strength and conditioning argument, but we have continued to win despite our OL play not because of it. I always see mention of the guys "cross training" at multiple positions on the OL. Do other schools put as much emphasis on this as Clemson does? While I understand you have to have some ability to plug someone in when you have a starter go down, I can't help but wonder if they just need to focus more on their primary positions. Maybe if Clemson took more than 2 OLs in each recruiting class they could use the second string guy to fill in instead of moving another starter over or whatever. If you only recruit 2 OL per year and one doesn't pan out then you are stuck with them because Dabo doesn't "process" players as long as they are good citizens and doing what they need to do in school. I like that he doesn't send guys packing if the coaches miss on the evaluation, but if that is the philosophy then seems like they need to take more OLs since that is a position that is supposed to be really difficult to evaluate and project from high school to college. It also means that whoever is the OL coach HAS to be a good evaluator of talent.

In my opinion, whenever Caldwell leaves Dabo should look for somebody that has either played in the NFL or has a record of putting guys in the NFL. Maybe easier said than done, but Clemson is apparently willing to throw money at assistants so why not go out and try to get a really good PROVEN OL coach when the time comes. It worked with Venables, Brooks, and Hobby. Why not try a new guy again?

Clemson is also essentially handicapping themselves by not using the portal. Seems like we have players leave right around signing day after the postseason and at that point it is too late to replace them with someone for that recruiting class and we wind up putting walk on players on scholarship. Meanwhile our competition is adding quality depth through the portal. I know they don't all work out but the portal stance is putting us at a serious disadvantage.
