What is the best defense that LSU has seen this year?

Jan 2, 2020, 3:36 PM

I'm re-watching the Auburn-LSU game. That Auburn D might be the best defense that Joe Burrow has seen this year. Their d-line was good, but their db's didn't seem all that amazing. LSU has not seen a team like Clemson, and it's not even close. Also, they haven't faced an offense like ours either. I believe that the final will be Clemson 41 LSU 27

I watched a Big 12 team “have it’s way” with that little girl Auburn yesterday. Seems to me like anyone can can do it.

They're 31st in Pass Yardage Allowed. 1st in Rush Defense. Joe picked on a crappy secondary. Clemson's Pass D ranked #1.

The same Georgia defense that lost at home to South Carolina? I've heard that there are three kinds of falsehoods: lies, white lies, and statistics. Maybe those SEC defenses are "so great" is because the average SEC offenses are pedestrian at best.

I would go with Georgia as well actually and then Auburn. Auburn's O kind of sucked so Auburn's D had a tougher job than Bama's D.

Yeah, Georgia and Auburn's defenses had a lot of extra pressure put on them by their lousy offenses.

Clemson's defense is the best they'll see . I am not sure all of the " Joe Burrow's this and that " adulation by the media and CFB world is going to be enough to beat a Clemson team who's offense is extremely potent as well ( arguably a more complete team overall ) and has a clearly better defense .

Bama is probably statically the best but to me auburn played the best. Was the only game I felt like we weren't dominating on offense. Texas was also an interesting game but that, was more early year finding your feet. But shows how the d can be attacked.

Yeah that was an excellent analysis - I encourage everyone to seek it out.

And we could accommodate it with our 4 - 2 - 5 base (just like Auburn's) or with our 3 - 3 - 5

Re: What is the best defense that LSU has seen this year?

Jan 2, 2020, 4:01 PM

Georgia's is statistically the best they faced.

UGA's was fourth overall at 275.7 yards per game allowed - just 11 ypg behind us, incidentally - and they gave up 481 yards and 37 points to LSU. The other Tigers were only up 17-3 at halftime; they did not exactly blow UGA out of the Benz like they did to Oklahoma.

The other caveat to that: UGA's offense is pretty terrible this year (62nd overall, and 73rd overall in passing offense!)...LSU loaded the box and stuffed UGA's run game (61 total yards rushing!), D'Andre Swift wasn't healthy and only got 2 carries for 13 yards, and Jake Fromm was terrible - 20 of 42 and 2 INT's.

I think we can probably do a little better than UGA did and limit them to maybe 30 or 35, but we're going to have to score 40+ to win.

I think we can. Their D has shown it can be had pretty much all year against even decent offenses.

You hear ad nauseam of Clemson’s 1pt “loss” to UNC. LSU played

Jan 2, 2020, 4:11 PM

at Bama and won by five points. Auburn played at LSU and lost by what? Three points. 3 points! I can’t recall any so-called pundit discussing that maybe, just maybe, the anointed GOAT LSU are at least vulnerable.

I think the Bama & Auburn margins of LSU wins point to the fact this will likely not be a blow out (by either side) but more likely a close game coming down to who has the most gas left in the tank in the 4th quarter.

Go (Clemson) Tigers!

4th Quarter Victory

Jan 3, 2020, 4:45 PM [ in reply to You hear ad nauseam of Clemson’s 1pt “loss” to UNC. LSU played ]

As physical as OSU was, we were fresher in the fourth quarter. That is part of the reason that the offense came alive late - like the 4 play winning drive.

And I think LSU is more susceptible to wearing down than OSU was. As long as we hang close, we will win late. (The longer it is tight, the more pressure will build on LSU.

Re: What is the best defense that LSU has seen this year?

The better question is in the history of the program has Clemson ever played against a QB with the numbers and stats that Joe Burrow has? Yes the Clemson defense is awesome and I have had season tickets for 45 years and have gone to games since the time your high school coach could get you in free, but LSU will be maybe the best team I have ever seen Clemson play. This is a dead serious big time game period.

Re: What is the best defense that LSU has seen this year?

Jan 2, 2020, 6:30 PM

I rewatched that one also. We often play that same 4 - 2 - 5 base so i think if we can run man press underneath like Auburn did, we can have success.

If you go back and look again, you will notice that LSU often threw the short pass to whichever receiver was not being pressed, so BV could dictate (to some extent) where they were going to throw the ball and defend accordingly to keep them from a first down.

I also think we could run the 3 - 3 - 5 with man press underneath to similar effect.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've watched it a couple of times.

Jan 2, 2020, 7:07 PM

I've watched the videos by Top Billin' and I read/watched the article on the Inverted Tampa 2. I will be interested to see what CBV comes up with, but I doubt it will be simple. I think he runs some 2-2-7 and some 3-2-6. I also think he runs some 4-3 and some 3-4 inverted. I am not done with my analysis, but I think one thing no one has talked about is that LSU likes the short ball, and will often take the 4-6 yard passes. IMHO, this might play right into CBV's hands, as he likes to force teams to drive the field, bending but not breaking, and then playing short field just like he did with OSU.

I would like to hear your thoughts on that Tobias... and Quozzel, yours, too.

Re: I've watched it a couple of times.

Jan 3, 2020, 2:20 PM

The vast majority of their offense appears to be the dink and dunk game, 5-10 yard short passes. They throw the occasional deep ball and I like their RB. I wonder how Burrow will do with defenders in his face, perhaps A gap blitzes. I would like to see Simmons spying the QB. However, BV is the expert. I trust him explicitly.

The unstoppable force vs the immovable object

Jan 3, 2020, 5:17 PM [ in reply to I've watched it a couple of times. ]

In general I agree with you, But I cannot see us running the 2 - 2 - 7 or the 3 - 2 - 6 except maybe once of twice, just to mess with Burrow's head. They run the ball and throw screens too well for those exotics to work well very much.

The 4 - 3 and the 3 - 4 inverted are the more likely change of pace - confuse-little-joe variations. I think BV tries them a bit early to see if we can generate pressure on Joe AND keep him from scrambling (at which he is very good)

As I said before, I think the 4 - 2 - 5 and/or the 3 - 3 - 5 (which is basically the Tampa 2 inverted) give us the best chance to press across the board with deep help to prevent the bomb from killing us. Tyler Davis will have a huge part to play when we go 3 - 3- 5. (BTW this is a big reason why we did not see much of Miles Pinckney in the second half of OSU ) He has to be able to anchor the A-gaps so that the LBs can flow to the ball or blitz. If we are in the 3 - 3 - 5, two of the linebackers will have minimum pass coverage responsibilities. This is part of the reason that Chad Smith becomes Defensive MVP.

The ability to sneak Tanner up to the LB position and Simmons back to safety (even after the snap) makes these defenses even more confusing and able to take away LSU's favorite strengths. And these two sets allow for a number of different blitz packages, as well.

One thing I wonder about is how well can we show man-to man but shift to zone after the snap with these defenses. Joe is pretty good at finding second and third receivers, if he gets the pre-snap read right. I am not sure how good he is when he gets it wrong.

I think you are absolutely right about BV loving to make Offenses grind down the field so that they make a mistake before they hit paydirt. However, LSU is pretty darn good at it, so it will be a real chessmatch. We all know that the back seven is our strength and these two defenses allow them to play to their strengths.

The only problem here is that LSU has gotten plenty of time to look these 2 defenses over. Bv might have to scheme a different look that allows all of the positions to accomplish the same tasks from another look.

I would like to know what y'all think, too.

Gottdam, I cannot wait until Saturday ! I am going out of my freakin' mind !!
Geaux you hairy Clemson tigers !!!

Re: The unstoppable force vs the immovable object

Jan 4, 2020, 6:35 PM

Thanks for the insight. Sorry I was not able to be online yesterday so just saw your reply.

I think CBV keeps them guessing... ####, he'll keep all of us guessing! He kept me guessing at State Farm til the final 0:37. I was screaming on that last OSU drive for him to cover Dobbins in the flat, but WTH did I know? It all worked out. I'm in Sect 145, Row 7 in NOLA, and I will not be close enough to the bench to "coach him up." LOL LOL LOL... but I'll be trying!

I really think he shows 2-2-7 a few times early, but blitzes two of the 7, basically making it a 3-3-5 (or 4-2-5) with Sam and Mike blitzing... I think even more he shows 3-2-6 and blitzes 2 of the 6, turning it into a 3-4-4 (3-4 inverted) with Sam and Will blitzing. He is a master of making it look like the defense is "not ready" (and, let's face it, he did get caught twice Saturday... or maybe he made it look like he got caught... after all, we really don't know what was in his mind!). He is a master chess player, and is always setting up something (even if he doesn't get around to using it).

The other thing I agree with you on is that he hast to "protect" Muse, and use him mostly as a disguised "up safety" or even defensive end. The key is that Joe not be able to figure out what he is until it's too late.

So, whether it's show man and play zone, or show zone and play man, it's going to be a variation of Santa Clara... ####... maybe it will be known as the Santa Clara Inverted! In any case, I'm betting that CBV > LSU OC and > Joe Burrow. Game, set and championship goes to the Tigers... 42-30. ###... I can't believe I said that!
