Everyone is working the why DJ wasn’t replaced line….

Dec 5, 2022, 10:25 PM

IN the end it was The coaching staff’s decision. But why is the real question.

Looking at all the info, for some reason the coaching staff apparently did not prepare Cade to be “the guy” until last week.

But looking at it objectively that appears short-sighted.

Looking at play calling, that was (let’s say) “different” for Cade vs DJ.

It looks like the coaching staff had their idea of what would work and DJU fit the bill and they did not want to change. Changing would require the game plan to (it appears) not fit DJ’s strengths.

That fits Streeter’s “no regrets” comments.

I would say that for whatever reason, the coaches thought the DJ way was the best way and the Cade way wasn’t.

Hindsight would make anyone question that assumption.

All I can say is the while the team may love DJ, it certainly looked like Cade gave the team hope and energy. It appeared that when Cade was out there both sides of the ball played better.

You can love your teammate but not think they are the way to a winning season. Support, love, etc. doesn’t necessarily translate to I’ll follow you blindly.

In the end, I think EVERYONE, coaches, players, fans, sports writers, etc. came to the realization that DJ was a great guy but not the guy to lead the team to any championship. Why it took 13 games I do not know and we will probably never have an adequate answer that satisfies, but at least for the next 25 days we’re all believing. That Ted Lasso is a really smart guy.

If you piece together all the comments that's been said by Dabo and cade after the championship, it's clear. First accolades from cade was to strength and conditioning. Cade would have gotten blown up if he tried to run our offense. He's still got a ways to go before he's ready. I think they'll grossly limit his running unless it's outside and out of bounds.

People forget DW was hurt 3 times his freshman year

if you count the broken collarbone in the spring. Physically, he wasn't there yet. Early, I think this did apply to Cade.

As for limiting his running, they did it with DW, especially in 2016, until very late in the year and especially in the playoffs.

In their post game presser Dabo said that Cade would be the first one to tell you he wasn’t ready. Cade was sitting right next to him but with the camera angle you couldn’t see Cade’s face. I wish Cade would have commented on that or at least would have liked to see his face when Dabo said it. Cade did say that it was a blessing to be able to stand by and watch all year. That was the closest he came to addressing that. I believe Cade may be totally on board with how this was handled. And if he is then that makes me feel better about it as well.

You're being kind with the "it took 13 games"....

DJ's play in 2021 should have been enough evidence for the staff to shorten his leash-

Looks to me like the coaching staff prepared CK pretty well to step in. Maybe practicing with the two's is a good idea when developing a young QB?

DJ carried such respect in the locker room that it would have blown up in the coach’s face had they made the change sooner. There was no Christian Wilkins to manage the situation this time.

Agreed. Most could clearly see the difference between the two. The true reasons we’ll probably never know, the coaches undying devotion and comments caused the questions and head scratching. Cade was never given a true chance from the beginning by his very limited playing time. I think due to what we saw Saturday night, if that would have happened earlier, the cat would have been out of the bag as for which one was clearly the best. The coaches just looked like fools for one week rather than half the season. Regardless, I thank DJ for his efforts, he’s a great young man. This page has turned with portal worries now and moving on. A lot to still be thankful for.

Go Tigers, beat TN !!!!

Where were our offensive and defensive analysts this year? The great Mack Brown pulled no punches when he said their defensive game plan was to stop the run and make DJU beat them through the air. He said they were unprepared for what CK2 brought to the field. How many other teams planned to make DJU beat them through the air. I can think of one for sure, and could probably find more if I rewatched all the games.
I may be wrong, but my idea of offensive and defensive analysts job description should be to try to figure out what our opponent is going to change to try to take advantage of our weaknesses. Then counter what they want to do by adjusting our game plan. If this adjusted game plan requires different personnel and plays, then make the changes

Fire away!!!.
