My only rule of thumb is to use softer balls in colder weather.

Noodles tend to work well for me in cold weather.

But on average, I could be using almost anything. All of the found balls I've collected at Winthrop over the years means I'll pretty well have a mishmash of stuff in the bag. If I go play a really nice course or in a tournament, then I might break out a new box of all the same. I just played for the first time in 7 months last week. I could have played just as well using a cue ball off of a pool table.

That's what she said.
I used to buy them $12/doz at Walmart. Now I buy them $4/doz from the flea market.

honestly.....whatever ball is in my bag

I have been playing golf pretty much my entire life (since I was about 10), and I have never, ever purchased a golf ball. Every ball I have ever used was either given to me or found. I worked on a golf course through high school and college. So I amassed a huge collection of them, so much so that my dad sold extras to his co-workers to help me get spending (um, beer) money at college.
I have several dozen still-in-the-box in my shed I have gotten for gifts/prizes over they years. Sadly, some are probably 5+ years old by now. I probably should use them more, but I never think to get them when I go out to play because my golf bag is always full. My game is such that I lose maybe 1 or 2 per round, and I always find a half-dozen or more every time I play a round while looking for my ball (or my playing partners) - I developed a sharp eye for them as a kid. I throw away more from wear and tear than I lose. Part of a successful round is leaving the course with more than you started with .....
To this day, I play whatever ball I have, I don't really have a favorite. I reckon Titleist 100 compressions have always been preferable I guess, but any Titleist is OK (I seem to find more of those than any other). The names change so much every year, way more than they used to, and I don't keep up with the "latest and greatest".
So I am living proof that the golf ball matters basically NONE (side note: clubs don't either). As long as it is round and still has a decent outer coating. I agree that soft covers/low compression are better in cold weather. Ladies balls are great if you don't care about the stigma attached.
