Take a look at the student section against a RANKED UVA team

Feb 17, 2014, 1:13 PM

Keep in mind, we are a bubble team for the NCAA tournament. A win over a highly regarded UVA team would have definitely increased our chances of getting an invite to the big dance tremendously. Getting an invite does wonders for the future of our program.

A Saturday afternoon, great weather, not during an exam week, and tickets are on the house...

(See photo for how our students respond. Picture was taken 6 minutes into the first half)

What a terrible location for a student section. No wonder no one showed up. The students who actually care about basketball probably pay for the better seats.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our student section has been packed in years past….

Feb 17, 2014, 3:53 PM

it has nothing to do with location. I remember through years we had much worse seasons (and we are overachieving this season) than this one and the student section was packed and going crazy.

Play exciting ball and they will come

Feb 17, 2014, 2:26 PM

As someone that was at Clemson for the Barnes and Shyatt years, let me tell you. This is not about being a football school. There was a point in 95-96 we were a basketball school because they won games and were exciting. There was constant camping out for tickets. Clemson can be a good "basketball school" fan wise, but we must put a winner on the court.

Being a bubble team after what 5 years and looking lost offensively in doing so outside KJ is not the way to get there. Tell me where this team is if he had not developed the way he has.

We had our chance to get Marshall, but did not. (That is long gone by the way) Seems to me the admin is fine with being a .500 basketball school. I hate it, but do not give me #### for not coming to see a .500 basketball team. I know that fans are to be at every event and lift the team from the ashes, but that is really tough when you are in year 18 in a row of being an average BBall team at best. Yes Purnell's team were just average

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's tough when your team plays in a place like clemson,

Feb 17, 2014, 3:54 PM

which is pretty far from any major population center. if the students don't show up, it's going to be hard to fill up an arena based on people traveling from greenville to see a mediocre team. i was there during the 89 and 90 seasons and those games were packed, but we were pretty good then.

Feb 17, 2014, 4:07 PM

The comparison is valid. If we can pack Death Valley with 85000, then we should easily pack a 10000 seat arena for a team exceeding expectations and facing a ranked team on a Saturday.

Like, I said before no excuses. We got better attendance during the Shyatt years than we have this season.

consistent basis, basketball attendance is going to struggle, because you can't count on as many coming into town to watch a basketball game. clemson is a small town. it's not like atlanta, raleigh, durham or even columbia. if the students don't show up, there are going to be empty seats.

I have not been to one game this year and I can tell you

Feb 17, 2014, 4:33 PM [ in reply to The Virginia game was on a Saturday….. ]

that there is NO way there is less attendance than the Shyatt years. You could walk into the game 5 min before tip and stand on the floor as a student.

Basketball is a tough sell without students. If the students are not energized by the team, you have no chance at somebody from Greenville, much less Columbia or Rock Hill.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This team is overachieving this year….

Feb 17, 2014, 3:57 PM [ in reply to Play exciting ball and they will come ]

our chances for the NCAA tourney our slim now, but we were picked to finish 14th in the conference. Maybe, if more fans showed up it would inspire the team and they will play better. Especially, coming off the road trip they went on. The team comes back home and their is no support from the students. As ineffective as our offense is this year, it's nowhere near as bad as the Shyatt years. And during the Shyatt years, when we couldn't even make the NIT, more students showed up.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was pretty sparse at the end of the Shyatt years

Feb 17, 2014, 5:51 PM

We used to sometimes get to the games after they'd started, and we'd still find plenty of open places to stand on those risers on the floor. By the end of the Purnell era, it was starting to get hard to find get good seats.

I really do hope it's not as bad as it was at the end of the Shyatt era, because this team is nowhere near as bad as those teams.

Lots of students in the stands -- keep in mind a lot of donors that have kids at Clemson...but the season package and their children use the tickets when they can not up for games. I was happy to see the upper level pretty full.

Students need to admit that Duke students and several others in the league OWN THEM. Wouldn't happen in my day. The old Fike was filled every game and Clemson rarely won.

Feb 17, 2014, 5:08 PM

I went to Shyatt game just as much as Barnes games. Do you really think this is about pulling for my team? I am not speaking about this team, this year. It is a culture of mid pack being good enough and it isnt. Should you support your team think and thin, YES! Should be surprised when others do not, no. The vast majority of our fan base is not on Tigernet, they do not care about this school athletics the way that we do.

Football and Basketball correlate for me, regardless of tradition because I have seen both be bad and people did not show to see them. I have seen both be great and they did. Now the ratios are off. Many more will come to the football games because of the the tradition, but that is because they have the promise that if we are bad, we will not allow it to stand for long. We will make a change to be a good team. We do not have the same resolve in basketball mainly because WE to not demand it.

winning must come first. The students will jump on as soon as the smell a little energy from the team. If we had stepped up and beat Cuse or UNC and got on a little roll, that gym would have been packed.

The fact that the prediction was 14 and we go from bottom to mid-pack is just not good enough to get excitement. It would not be in football either. We go 0.500 in football for 4 years and Dabo would be gone, but in basketball we insulate ourselves and say it is okay because we are a "football school, we do not get to have a basketball team too". It is a free market economy in the sporting word and the public has passed its judgement. That gym is special when it is rocking, but it goes not come form nowhere.
