ESPN3 Blackout workaround

Feb 2, 2013, 10:56 AM

This is a post from a bama board so I don't have first hand knowledge of it working. So take it for what it is worth.

For those of us with a login to ESPN3 who live in Alabama or Florida, as you probably know already, the game will be blacked out and thus unavailable on ESPN3.

There is a very easy workaround for this.

Go to http://www.hotspotshield.com/ and download the FREE version. Once installed, close your browser and activate hotspotshield. This will run your IP address through a proxy server typically in NY or CA. Thus when you log in to ESPN3, their servers see you as a user in one of those states and thus the game will not be blacked out.

Typically after I activate hotspotshield, I go to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ to check to see which proxy location I am running though. If it tells you it is a state other than AL or FL, you are good to proceed to ESPN3 and enjoy. If by chance it is AL, FL or somewhere outside of the US, deactivate hotspot shield, re-enable it and check your location again at http://whatismyipaddress.com/.

I am in Mobile, AL and as you can see from the attached picture, once activated, it shows me as being located in San Gabriel, CA (ie. not blacked out).

About as easy as it gets, assuming you already have access to ESPN3 content.

Since posting this the first time I have had a chance to use this and i can tell you that it works. I watched the GT game from "Romanina". One thing to remember when you go to the espn site is to log in before the click on the game. If you stay logged in like me you might overlook this and think you can't get the game. Remember your IP will be different so there would be no auto log in. One more thing. I don't have high end anti virus software but when i posted this before, another tnetter said it passed all his checks. take it for what its worth.

bama board concerning one of their past games. It just contains the method for the work around. The italics and top are from my original post and the bold at the bottom is new to the post. Sorry, I can see how that is very confusing.
