Yep - it's a derogatory term for losing in any fashion now. Charleston Southern losing to Alabama... "Charleston Southern Clemson'd the game away..." sigh

Well we didn't lose quite like that, but there was a Georgia Tech game back when Justin Miller was still playing for us when our long snapper effed up the snap and gave Tech the ball inside our own 10 yard line, if I recall correctly.

That game was the worst I ever felt after a loss. Watching on TV after family had gone to bed (kids were young), and over that last couple minutes I wasn't sure if I was having a heart attack or about to puke.
We were pretenders back then. Capable of winning vs. virtually anyone, but not capable of sustaining championship level play. And when we were down, it seemed nearly impossible to hang in or mount a comeback.

Geoff Rigsby.. Damm - he's somewhat of a friend of mine (or was - we've since lost touch). That will follow him for the rest of his life.
True story - that year, my friends/family all went to Colorado to go skiing for New Years and he came with us. We're in a gondola and there's a few other people in there with us and we start talking. Somehow, this other guy starts talking to Geoff and Geoff mentions that he plays football for Clemson. The guy says "oh really" and asks what position, and Geoff tells him long snapper - and without fail, the guy goes "huh.. so.. are you the guy that screwed up and lost that one game against GT?"
And then - no kidding, that same trip a day or so later - we're all in our cabin and watching ESPN one night and they're having this Sportscenter Year in Review thing. It's just a 30 minute montage of Shaq and Kobe, people hitting home runs, crazy NASCAR crashes and all this stuff. I swear to God, the entire show ends with Geoff collapsed on the paw as all these GT players celebrate. We were all like "Holy #### it's G... I mean.. ughh.." He was sitting right with us - maybe the most awkward situation I've ever been in. We tried to save it by saying "well, none of us have ever been on Sportscenter." He seemed to take it ok I guess.
He is a good guy though - I feel bad for these athletes getting crucified over mistakes like that. These kids pour their lives into these programs - in no way do they want to lose. Geoff is a good guy and like I said, he'll be remembered for that forever.

A coach can't "refuse to be interviewed" if you want to keep a legit program.
There's only one way to combat this - continue to reverse the trend. The mountain of evidence is mounting up. Run the table, beat FSU, punish the coots, win the ACC this season. All very realistic goals. All things we should be able to do given our talent compared to the remaining teams on our schedule.
The toughest thing is beating FSU. The way we've played them the last few years has been embarrassing. That has to change, starting this year. They aren't as good as they've been in past years. If they come up here and beat us again, it will be because we underachieved. Dabo cannot let that happen.

2004 GT. They didn't run the fumbled punt snap in, but it set them up for like a 1 play TD to Calvin Johnson. We get that punt away we win the game.

Was this where the whole thing started? Or does it go back to the fumblerooskie against FSU? I wonder if anyone even recalls what led to the whole thing.

It's a Tommy Bowden thing
Oct 19, 2015, 12:18 PM
|
|
Time after time he had a way of losing (or nearly losing to) teams that had far less talent than his team. So you can thank Tommy Bowden for it now. He was finally fired mid-season for losing to a pathetic Wake Forest team despite having vastly superior talent.
It seems that the only way to overcome it would be for us to win the national championship again, post-Bowden. Then our program can undeniably be associated with success at the highest level, and those who use that term will sound ignorant or foolish by continuing to use it to signify anything else other than success. Of course, there are some in sports media who will sound ignorant or foolish because that's who they are. I suspect that Schlabach may be one of those, although I'm not familiar enough with him to say so with knowledge.

So, while some other games under Bowden probably contributed to it, the culmination was likely GT and/or NCST games in 2011.

Then beat top 5 FSU. Then killed Duke. Then beat Scar 63-17. Then beat top 10 Tennessee in the Peach Bowl.
Then came back in 2004 and lost a game to Georgia Tech by snapping the ball over the punters head. All we had to do was punt the ball and we win the game.
Bowden should have been fired after Wake Forest beat us so badly in 2003.

The only way to fix any of this and shut them up is WIN. We WIN and say F$%# Off, ESPN!! I like that they continue to give us no respect. The players and coaches recognize that and it's just fuel to our fire.
