Epic Clemson Football Games

Oct 6, 2015, 7:25 PM

In my opinion there have been a lot of great games. However I believe that three stand out either because of the game, or what happened around the game. These three are

1. 1978 Gator Bowl, Yes we won, but this was the game where Woody Hayes hit the Clemson Player and was fired
2. 1981/2 Orange Bowl. Clemson won the National Championship beating Nebraska
3. 2015 Clemson Notre Dame Game. Clemson won the game in last seven seconds and the stands were full. All of this going on while 1000 year rain storm was going on. There were so many plays and penalties that the fans had a part in. In one series, three in a row.

Let me know if you agree, and is there another game you would add and why.

He kicked the winning field goal twice in last seconds against Georgia if I remember correctly

LSU-2013, Scar-2000, Miami-2009, GT-2001 all come to mind

Granted, they're all recent and might not stand the test of time, but I think they get the nod for now.

LSU and Miami because they are program-defining wins. Scar because of last second heroics. GT because we had lost four straight to them and was generally an amazing game.

LSU for sure. 4th & 16 will go down in history!***

I think that more than anything is the defining play of the dabo era

I kind of call these quasi-epic. Another handful like these, 80's Georgia games for instance. People don't realize what a BIG DEAL it was to beat Georgia in '81 since they were National Champs the year before. Other last second 80's Georgia wins...wow!

The ND game would be in this category as well, but the 1000 year rain and 8:00 pm national exposure, game day, etc. sent it to epic level.

I agree on those 3...

Oct 6, 2015, 8:37 PM

...the epic nature of the ND game could be burnished a LOT if bigger epic things happen down the road this year.

2011 3 game stretxh

Oct 6, 2015, 8:54 PM

Looking back, that year was so important for the program's development and so special. I remember when the 2011 schedule came out and we had defending champs Auburn, FSU, and @ VaTech on a Thursday night my roommate and I both said we'd sign up for 1-2 through that stretch

The W vs Auburn started this run. First classic Dabo post game rant.

FSU win basically helped us win our first ACC championship.

VT was so important because it erased many Thursday night/Lane Stadium nightmares.

Not to mention the 2011 ACCCG vs the Hokies and how important that championship was.

UGA game two years ago. It was hyped all summer and the Tigers won it. It began with Brent saying "even Ga had to take a peek" when we ran down the hill. Sammy taking that short pass to the house. Vic sacking Murray. Great night to be a Tiger.

Just to add to the penalty series, weren't they all pre-snap

2 delay of game and false start, or vice versa. Testament to the crowd noise and home field advantage

I agree it was loud

In the 70's, a QB could ask the ref for help if the crowds got to loud and he would stop the game. I remember in the 70's, Clemson went up to NC State and the ref stopped the game there from the noise the Clemson fans were making. I believe this was in the 3-6-2 season.

All those mentioned are good ones, but we can't leave out 2004 Peach Bowl vs. Tennessee. We made them look absolutely stupid.

Best Epic Games HAS to include the1977 game in Columbia, and I was there! It was a milestone game for our program showing we were at the threshold of great success to come. We came in with a #15 ranking and SCar was 5-5 (sound familiar?). We were coming off a four-point loss the previous week to eventual national champion Notre Dame! Coaches were Charley Pell and Jim Carlen, QBs were Steve Fuller and Ron Bass (yep, from the movie "Remember the Titans"). We led 24-0 in the third quarter (sound familiar?) but SC rallied in the 4th to make it 24-20 after a missed a two-point conversion (sound familiar?). Clemson shanked a punt, and Bass hit a TD pass for a 27-24 lead.

BYOG Clemson started from its 33-yard line. Fuller passed for 26 yards and then 18 yards to Dwight Clark. At the SCar 20-yard line, with 49 seconds to play, receiver Jerry Butler saw Fuller was in trouble so he broke back toward the quarterback. Fuller couldn't take a sack to preserve a FG attempt, so his throw was as much out of futility as anything else. Butler leaped and although he was playing with two jammed and wrapped fingers, he extended himself to reach the ball in what has been labeled "The Catch." We win!

Runner up epic game is the 2000 SCar game at Clemson where Dantzler hits Gardner for Catch II! Hunt FG (with hold by future CO-OC Jeff Scott) for the win! I was fortunate enough to be there, too. Recall the sleet starting just as the game ended!
