IS THIS THE END OF COLLEGE FB?

Jan 11, 2017, 1:16 PM

NFL just announced plans to start pro league for 18-21 yr olds; this could be disastrous for NCAA football. I do not like it, they will prolly wave huge amounts of money in their faces and schools will lose all the good players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Suits me.

Jan 11, 2017, 1:18 PM

That will end the play for pay in colleges across the country. Back to putting the 'student,' into student athlete.

Jan 11, 2017, 1:39 PM

There are a LOT of really good players who would rather play 3-4 years in front of a large enthusiastic crowd while getting a free college education than to spend those years on a bus playing minor league football for peanuts in front of a couple of hundred fans.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And how many baseball players get a full scholarship?

Jan 19, 2017, 8:54 AM [ in reply to yeah? Look at college baseball and say that with a straight ]

Not even close to a fair comparison. Plus, the HS baseball players drafted in higher rounds can get millions in a signing bonus. In this situation, the cost of a free education would be more comparative to what the players would be getting at the minor league pay. If baseball could actually have a reasonable number of scholarships, I would bet you there would be more blue chip players deciding to play college ball over the minors. Right now it is a decision of get paid or pay to play. Football the decision would be get paid or get a scholarship to play - big difference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What!?! Do we have to compete with minor league baseball?

Jan 18, 2017, 11:38 AM [ in reply to seems to me that would make college have to pay to compete*** ]

If you wanted to watch the best players you would be watching the NFL any way. We watch college football because of the tradition, rivalries, connections, etc.

I love this and it is the beginning of return of real college football. The NFL needs a league for the players who have no interest in school. Stop the idea of paying players in the college system and let them go to the NFL D league. Sure the product might take a hit but college is about the student athlete.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jan 11, 2017, 1:33 PM

As long as the playing field for college ball is level, I really don't mind that much if the overall product suffers a talent drain because of a minor league for 18-21 year old players.

Hope the same rules would be in place as baseball for those who choose to commit and enroll in college that they're not eligible to go pro for 2-3 years.

Too much good development in NCAA to rely on a feeder league out of high school. They have to have money at all to have any money to offer a high schooler, and they won't.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Won't last, if it even starts. Completely unrealistic..

Jan 11, 2017, 1:48 PM

D League works for the NBA and minor league works for baseball, because those two sports have small roster size compared to football. A D league for the NFL won't work because you won't be able to bring in enough money to cover costs due to not having enough fans attending games

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just looked up the percentage of CFB players that make it

Jan 18, 2017, 10:56 AM

to the NFL. The number is even lower than I thought, 1.6% So, even if ALL the supposed good players went to this league, 98.4% of the college players would still be there. And, given the chance, a lot of them would become college stars. Don't worry, College Football will not only survive, it will continue to be just as interesting as it is now.

claim exploitation in the college game as kids would have a free market alternative.

Considering training camps for NFL combines and other tryouts run around $15k for one month, it's interesting that many criticizing the financial structure of college football never refer to the $100k + per year in professional, high-quality training and conditioning program benefits that these kids gain as well, especially at the top tier programs, in addition to having $50k+ / year tuition fees waived.

I think it would be a good thing for college football. Sure, the level of play would probably take a hit as the 4 and 5 star guys would probably opt to go that route rather than school, but it would help reinstate the integrity of the game.

Lets look at this from a money standpoint . Since the sixties NFL and college football
has received TV money that has grown into a monster . Before TV teams had to fill the stadium
for profit .

Tell me where this new deal is going to make money ???
Where are these stadiums they will play in ???? Not a lot of Unused stadiums sitting around .

It took a good hundred years to get College football to where it is today , , not going anywhere .

This is just a dream for someone . been tried before , No TV contract no money .

I don't think it will have long term affects because believe it or not most kids want that college degree. Think about the percentage of players that make it big in the NFL. Most end up benefiting from the degree.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: IS THIS THE END OF COLLEGE FB?

Jan 19, 2017, 8:25 AM [ in reply to Re: IS THIS THE END OF COLLEGE FB? ]

The article I read didn't have anything to do with the NFL.

It's an idea spurred by some agent, called the "Pacific League" or something, and there's only a proposed handful of teams in a localized area.

Maybe, possibly the NFL might give it a glance and pick up a player before the Pacific whatever goes spurs up, but chances of that are slim. Every so often someone from arena league or some little thing gets picked up, but there are probably more rugby and Australian footballers in the NFL who got a look before the Hudson Valley Five Star Pro Football league player.

The NFL has absolutely no rule saying a player needs to even sniff a college; just be three years removed from high school. Heck, you don't even have to play football. Kansas just picked up a track and field star from Miss State.

Given that, I don't know what ultra-talented, aspiring pro would choose wallowing in some agent's lark over the guaranteed exposure college ball offers. Think about the amount of press and TV time a good college player receives. Consider the facilities and staff to which the college players have access. Every year, that system accounts for the vast majority of those drafted.

Even putting education aside, it would take billion$ in infrastructure investment for this new league to even come close to providing that kind of marketability for an aspirant. Shoot, in the same article, some little startup "league" is asking players to pay them $350 for "exposure."

We won't be hearing about this "league" two years from now, if it even gets off the ground and borrows youth soccer field at the Y.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: IS THIS THE END OF COLLEGE FB?

Jan 19, 2017, 8:44 AM

My feeling on it is that the NFL already has it's developmental leagues , and those are HS and CFB .

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DB23

I doubt this will even come to fruition

Jan 19, 2017, 9:07 AM

The NFL nor its players union has backed this project. It's an independent endeavor. They have no funding other than donors, not even one single investor yet. My guess is, they won't even get off the ground. Even if they do, it won't last because they won't have the money or support to keep paying the players/coaches and will eventually die off due to lack of funds. College football is a multi-billion dollar industry that isn't going to be all of a sudden ruined by some rack-shack minor league.
