Meineke Car "Couldn't Care Less" Bowl was low point, but leader in Tajh Boyd emerged

The desultory Meineke Car Care Bowl loss to South Florida was a decade ago but the memories, both good and bad, linger. The memory that stands out to me is a tearful Tajh Boyd standing in the tunnel outside of the Clemson locker room promising that 6-7 seasons were unacceptable. Full Story »

I was at that game, my first and only bowl game. I enjoyed everything but the loss, but I left there thinking Clemson is going to be better next year after watching Tajh and Nuk.

Thank you David. This is a great article reminding us how Tajh started out and keeping his accolades fresh in our minds.
Also the early struggles that Dabo dealt with before he and others built our dynasty.
It's a good habit to recall where we came from not that long ago.

Remember this game well.
After the Hatfield and West years, the Bowden era presented hopes. Then comes Swinney and felt like we were regressing.
It was dissapointing but for a Clemson fan used to so so performances, it was not a big deal.
I am the kind of fan who would complain but will still watch Clemson. But Dabo turned it around. Morris brought a big change. Oh well.. Even today I have to pinch myself when I see CU in the top 5.
Out turn now baby. Go Dabo

have used the phrasing that, when referring to the Car Care Bowl that year, we didn't want to be there / "Couldn't Care Less" bowl . . . .

Isn't this the same thing "we" (here on TNet) relentlessly ridicule other programs about ?

It sure sounded to me that Tajh Boyd wanted to be there - I would bet everything I have that Dabo wanted to be there & he wanted to WIN. I'm guessing the VAST majority of guys on the team wanted to be there - players want to play, don't they ?

All those people that faxed and emailed, etc - it sure SEEMED like we wanted to be there. The folks that went to the game obviously wanted to be there.

My wife is a USF grad & I wanted to be there . . . . problem is, she has 2 shirts that commemorate the score on them . . . .

USF wanted to be there - they have that trophy in the foyer of their athletics building - FRONT & CENTER - and I see it WAY too often.

If we would have won that game, would we be saying Sure we won, but we didn't want to be there.

Or would we be saying This was where you could start to see the ship beginning to turn around, with Dabo at the wheel, making sure everyone knew that every game matters.

Just random thoughts about a game that mattered to me - because Clemson was playing in it

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Two things I remember about that game

Jul 7, 2020, 9:46 AM

1) One of our guys, I forgot who, body-slammed one of their return guys.

2) Tahj Boyd’s heart. He didn’t have a good game but he didn’t quit. I liked his leadership.

Outside of those two things the only real positive from that game was that more of Bowden’s players with the couldn’t care less attitude were cycling out of our program.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course, Kyle Parker started the game...

Jul 7, 2020, 10:56 AM

Boyd replaced him in the second half after Parker re-injured his ribs. I remember the INT Boyd threw on the first play of the 4th quarter that was returned the Clemson 10 yard line.

It was 13 - 17 at the half which didn't seem too bad considering how poorly we played.

I also remember that fewer than 40,000 tickets were sold and only about half that many actually attended.

I have cared about every bowl game we have ever been in

Jul 7, 2020, 9:55 AM

Re: I have cared about every bowl game we have ever been in

Yes, me too, even our worst games I care about, even if I sometime I assume we will win big I always care how we play, what players play and how they perform. Watching these kids develop and compete is enjoyment to me.

I remember how bad this bowl game hurt and the one Syracuse demolished us in hurt worse. I always thought Dabo would be a good coach because he took responsibility and changed the culture.

We keep getting better & better everyday, in every way!

game that my Son and I got to go together. He was 9 at the time. 9-years-old is a funny place, I guess; full of positiveness about new adventures. USF might as well have been Nebraska or Notre Dame to him. We laughed like crazy about the onsides-kicks, and he was more than covered by those and the late TD's to somehow be stone-cold excited about a "close loss with a big comeback".

Then we got to ride the electric train out of the stadium to south Charlotte to pick up the car.

It was like a 9-year-old's dream come true. It was a great day!

It was a loooong day! Noon kickoff (?) so

Jul 7, 2020, 11:54 AM

I drove up from Charleston, met a buddy at Winnsboro Walmart and sat through the game. I don’t think Parker was ever the same after being injured trying to stop an Auburn DB from scoring at the goal line after an int. In hindsight, would have been better to let him score. The positive was seeing Tajh Boyd move the team down the field. You could see them the high potential he had.

The good was also making it back home in time for pluff mud flavored oyster roast at the daughter’s house. New Years Beer & oysters took some of the pain away!

fortitude in sticking with Dabo after that debacle than when he initially hired him. LOTS of similarities in the situations after the 1980 and 2010 seasons. 1981 or 2011 could easily have resulted in coaching changes if they had gone south again. But instead.....:) :) :)

Hindsight is 20-20.

I was at that game and it was perhaps the worst game I've ever seen. I felt awful and had no expectations we'd get better. I live in Charlotte. I stayed to the end. This is what I recall....

South Florida, a no name team, was up 31-13 before Boyd entered the game. USF knowing they had the game wrapped up toyed with us late, never taking a chance on offense and never worrying much about Boyd entering the game in the 4th quarter. We were SO BAD that day it hurt.

Of course, we got better, Boyd turned out to be a really good QB and in retrospect, it's easy to see the light behind those dark clouds from the perspective of today.

If you were at that game and saw something that gave you hope, you and I saw different games.

It might be fun to watch a replay of the game to see if I think differently about it now.
But nevermind. Once was enough.

Embarrassing to be a Tiger Fane that day.....

Jul 8, 2020, 12:04 PM

I was so disappointed in my fellow Tigers. No one showed up to support the team and show Tiger pride. I know the stakes were not high but we had been through worse.
