Electric cars

Mar 7, 2022, 10:00 AM

Are they worth it? I know it'd be great right now to not have to pay these crazy gas prices. But on the other hand, it'd take me many fill-ups to make up the difference between my gas car and an higher priced electric car.

Also, how is charging station availability? My wife and I like to road trip up to the mountains and rural areas to stay in Air B&Bs, who pretty much never have charging stations. You can't plug into a regular old outlet, can you? Don't have you have to have special charging capabilities?

My old 2009 car is on its last wheels (topping 250k miles any day now) and I think my next car will be a hybrid. Best of both worlds, from what I know. Also, price difference isn't that much. I should add I'd be buying a used/pre-owned car. Not in the new car budget range at this point.

You go where the car wants to go. But on the positive side, Columbia is out of range from Greenville for a day trip.

Mar 7, 2022, 10:49 AM

yesterday. Had to stop and get some gas and it wasn't the best part of Detroit, but not the worst. I really really want to grab a red bull, so the dilemma was

Is my son safer:
A) in the car with the doors locked
B) walking into the gas station with me

I chose neither and just got a beer at the car show. :)

no expert, but I honestly think a hybrid is the optimal

Mar 7, 2022, 10:18 AM

choice at this moment in time. 5, maybe 10 years from now, probably all-electric. A hybrid where you can do city driving on battery and interstate driving on gasoline. I don't think the pure electric vehicle national infrastructure is "mature" enough. My personal opinion. Need a few more years.

But it depends on your personal driving habits. I live out in the boonies, I don't think an all-electric is best for me. If you live in a city that has a lot of charging stations being built, it well may be.

Read up on the choices out there.

Re: no expert, but I honestly think a hybrid is the optimal

Mar 7, 2022, 9:30 PM

Darn smart analysis scooter.

Among other matters are the electric grid and risks of not getting enough electricity to keep your 'fully electric' vehicle charged.

This situation is close to becoming real in Germany, thanks in part to Energiewende and in part to the rapidly rising popularity of EVs.

A J.P.Morgan paper (from 2 years ago, so the paper has some obsolete opinions) predicted that the German electrical grid would be at risk (not guaranteed to, but at risk) of being overwhelmed when the number of EV cars reached 30% of all vehicles. In 2021, EVs in Germany slightly exceeded 30%.

Germany's electric grid has been (and will continue to be) severely strained because they have shut down most of their nuke plants and are committed to getting rid of most of their coal plants. Their windmills are not producing enough power, and the transmission lines (from Northern Germany to their population centers in the South) are not adequate. Numerous factors which are leading towards an inadequate grid for taking care of 'pure' EVs.

The USA isn't as stupid (yet) as Germany with respect to taking our electricity grid as a birthright, but we're trending in that direction. Many of our politicians and much of our population loves to emulate the foolish programs which originate in the EU.

Summary: Hybrid cars are the best insurance against risks re: electricity availability.

500 miles to go to the mountains

Mar 7, 2022, 10:44 AM

20 miles per gallon = 25 gallons. An extra dollar per gallon = 25 bucks. I typically spend about $1000 to go away for the weekend. 25 dollars isn't changing a thing.

I figured that out or my boat last week

Mar 7, 2022, 11:14 AM

The gas tank is 53 gallons. At $4.00/gallon, 3x a year that's ~$600 in gas (I've never put more than 40 gallons in it at one fill up). If gas doubles to $8/gallon, its not going to keep me from using the boat. It's certainly not the most expensive part of the whole thing.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

this. this. this.

Mar 7, 2022, 11:22 AM

I am not saying I like it or that its a good thing, but the hand wringing over gas prices cracks me up. How about cut out that 12 pack of beer that week or don't go out to eat that week. I have spent more on a bag of jerky inside the store than the price increase of the gas....I could probably just cut that out if in dire need.

keep me from making the ~30+ mile round trip to our favorite restaurants on the lake every weekend. We do a lot of running around, I expect that to be cut in half at least this year. Not sure if we could have made a coastal trip happen this year or not anyway, but I'd say it's definitely out of the cards now when I factor in hauling it down there, cost for gas at marinas, etc.

Pretty much ##### all over my parade.

Mar 7, 2022, 11:46 AM

with a group and while we are flying, another person in the group was going to trailer his boat down there. I doubt that's going to happen now. He has an identical boat to mine, pulling it with an F150 from Murrells Inlet. He'd prob get ~10 MPG for 800 miles. That's anywhere from $320-$350 just in gas...one way.

I won't ever go back to a gas car again.

Like the other thread I linked and Mauldin said, if you're measuring worth by return of investment no gas prices, you won't get your money back.

Charging station availability is great, especially for Tesla, I don't know about other manufacturers. Yes, you an plug into an outlet at an AirBnB (lol prod doesn't know what that is) and charge at a very slow pace; however, over a full weekend at an AirBnb you'll have plenty of charge added back to make it to a fast charger for the road trip.

Mar 7, 2022, 2:05 PM

Lets say you decide to come down here and visit. Its about 293 miles from th middle of NC to IOP. I'm going to guess you might be able to make here on a full charge?. There is one Tesla charger (I guess its a supercharger?)within 5 miles of here, and that's at an In Town suites hotel.

So do you drive down after work on a Friday, then stop 5 miles from your destination, then charge up and enjoy your weekend? Or get to your destination, then go back to the hotel in the morning, waiting around for it to charge, the start your weekend?

The whole thing seems incredibly inconvenient.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It really is...lol

Mar 7, 2022, 9:39 PM

I would head down I-95, could leave with as low as 70% charge, get to the Florence, SC supercharger, unfortunately the I-95 corridor in NC & SC sucks still, they only have 150kW chargers but are building some 250kW ones along that route that'll be up in the next couple quarters.

Get to Florence supercharger with 10% charge (assuming leaving the house with 80% charge). It's a 25min charge to go from 10% to 75% on the V2 charger. The Florence supercharger is at a mall, while plugged in, walk over to the Starbucks in the mall, get a drink, walk back, it's almost been 25min already. Get on the road again.

That charge will get you to the North Charleston supercharger, a V3 250kW charger, with a 15% charge left. Sit at the charger for 5min to get to a 50% charge.

Get to your house with a 48% charge, don't even need to plug in at your place.
