Early names for Nebraska.

Aug 29, 2022, 11:40 AM

Just perused a Cornhusker board. It is full of threads talking about when Frost will be fired and who will replace him. Of course they are throwing out names. And, of course, being fans, they are throwing out big names.

No, they aren't saying Nebraska should hire Dabo or Nick, but other than that they aren't eliminating many people.

Here are the names most mentioned in the threads I read. In no particular order: Aranda, Matt Campbell, Kiffin, Luke Fickell, Mike Gundy, Urban Meyer

They would be absolutely crazy to hire Urban Meyer. Too many “health” issues.

Think about it. UM may not be far fetched cause the Huskers want to win and win now.

Go Tigers!!

Just wondering if Nebraska is still a top job? Geographically it would seem to be tough area to recruit. Does being in BIG really help them recruiting wise? I don’t know. It just seems different than when Osborne was at the helm in the 90s and you had the old Big 8.

in today's world, "geographical recruiting areas" are a myth

Aug 29, 2022, 11:53 AM

Doesn't exist for any Power 5 school... travel and technology have erased those line for most colleges and universities. And to the recruit, "who will see me play" is important, so the TV deals play a muhc larger role in recruitment than what part of the country you're in, or how "remote" your school may be.

Agreed. Osbourne was always able to pick up skill speed/talent out of Texas and Florida. Don't see that happening now. It is an uphill climb for anyone who takes that job.

Urban Meyer would be successful there.

Aug 29, 2022, 11:57 AM

He would recruit well and get them turned around within a couple of years.

In addition to wins, he would also bring drama and questionable recruiting practices.

In the new world of NIL, is there such a thing as questionable recruiting practices anymore. Jimbo can flourish at TAMU and do it all legally.

I dont know much about questionable recruiting tactics, but Urban saved the B1G when he was hired at OSU. Before him, the B1G coaches had a “gentleman’s agreement” not to recruit each others committed players. What kind of ######## is that? Urban ruffled a lot of feathers when he got to OSU, but it was necessary to bring the B1G out of the olden days. I still think the B1G is needs to be a little more cutthroat. After all, if you aint cheatin, you aint tryin.

I vote for Urban Meyer. Just to keep the fun and frivolity that is Nebraska going.***

One of the best Clemson Football posts in TNet history.

We did play them about 15 years ago and there was that game in Miami

Walt said once that Paul Johnson would be a good fit there and I kinda liked that idea. I'm pretty sure it would never happen.

Nebraska and Missouri should be working on a

conference swap. Both are out of their element where they are and IMO would each fit better in each other's conference going forward.

Nebraska would benefit from OK, Texas, Arky, and TAMU being a part of their annual mix. They are largely an afterthought and oddity in the B1G.

Mizzou would benefit from Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio programs. They are largely an afterthought and oddity in the SEC.

Aug 29, 2022, 12:36 PM

would want that job. Maybe if Nebraska ponies up and overpays (think Saban/Smart-type money) they can get a coach of that caliber, but there are just so many downsides to that job now. Watching Scott Frost fail there surely has to scare a lot of guys off. Just look at all of the issues they have:

1) You can't recruit to Nebraska anymore. This isn't going to change unless they commit Texas A&M levels of money to NIL.

2) The fans still expect to win like they did in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. A job where it's really difficult to win and the fans still expect to win a lot is a really bad situation for a HC to walk into.

3) They don't play ANY of their old rivals anymore. To me this is a pretty big deal because a program like Nebraska that is struggling to stay relevant in CFB could really use anything to get them in the spot light. Playing their old rivals like Texas and OU would help with that. Rivalry games like that still move the needle, even when one (or perhaps both) of the teams are mediocre. Playing Ohio State and Penn State doesn't. Nebraska - OU last year was a pretty big deal- they need more games like that.

4) They've now had 4 straight failed head coaches (5 if you count Solich). And Scott Frost seemed like the perfect guy to finally get them turned around and he's gone 15-30 since taking over. The job Bo Pelini did there is looking better and better all the time, despite not being enough to satisfy anyone at the time.

I don't know, but if i were Luke Fickell or Dave Aranda i would absolutely wait for a better opportunity than Nebraska. They will both get better offers in the near future.
