I’m going to say something super controversial…

David Letterman always sucked. He had some great shows, but his lack of effort sucked. I hate Jay Leno as much as the next guy. But he worked hard for the gig. It’s time to abandoned the quiters!!!

Did you wake early or stay late? How drunk are you at this time?

after Three's Company ends on whatever throwback channel it is that I watch.
I am not sure I get his comedy, time has probably just passed his routine and schtick.
I liked Letterman, never really watched Leno.
I am a sleeper, so never up that late.

Early Letterman was great, but he got more and more

cynical and self-important and less and less funny and entertaining as time went on. Carson was always the best, and he set the bar extremely high, but that was a different time, in a different world. Leno was likeable, and maybe underappreciated when all is said and done, but never was "great" on the level of Carson or even early Letterman, in my book. The guy I feel really bad for is Conan; I always really liked him and his show; maybe too goofy for some, but always creative and good-natured, plus he paid his dues. I liked Craig Ferguson a lot too, and he deserved credit, if nothing else, for his amazing interviews with smoking hot wimmins. As for the rest, meh.

Agreed. Early Letterman was performance art.

But it only lasted a short time. He had some great friends of the show though - Warren Zevon chief among them.

more than Carson. And yes, he was better early on, but even at the end, he was better than anything on right now - and yes, I am an old boomer.

years couldn't tell a joke unless it slammed Trump.
Agree Carson was the best, especially with his sidekick Ed M. Loved the Carnac skits.

Fallon's part of the reason we got Trump to begin with, so he has a debt to pay there.

What gives?
I loved Letterman. I bought my first VCR specifically so I could record every episode of Letterman. I loved all the characters.
Remember, Larry Bud Melman dressed like that because it made him look good. #### good.

it's generational. Johnny Carson will always be the top dog for people my age. Being able to stay up and catch his show was the bomb. Remember, only one TV in the house back then... you had to sneak into the den after the parents went to sleep and watch it with the volume down super low. In fact, it was a badge of honor at school to say you watched Carson the night before... what? your parents let you watch Carson?? Because it was radical... they drank, they smoked, they told dirty jokes...
It was a glimpse into Hollywood. He had the best guests... Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Dean Martin, Don Rickles, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Sinatra, you name it, all the "A list" legends. He had a lot of young comedians that got their first exposure on his show. Great musical guests... he had David Bowie on for Gods sake. And jazz greats like Pete Fountain and Buddy Rich and many others. And all the skits and crap. He was just cool. Johhny was super cool. There will never be another like him.
edit: having said all that, I also enjoyed Letterman, especially early on as others have mentioned. His quirky, dorky style was different. He was funny as chit.
