The best news I have read this year. Of course, it has been pretty much a crap show of news this year but still...It did my heart good to know that the truth still does find a way to come out even when the odds seem stacked against someone. I doubt if any of the major news organizations expected this on Thursday and especially in less than one day. There must have been practically no evidence – as others have noted, grand jury indictments are not hard to get.
Of course, DW4 is not out of the woods yet. I am not a lawyer, but I do not see how a jury in this kind of civil case could find in favor of the plaintiffs with no criminal charges. This is not like the O.J. case where there were two dead bodies. This is a simple “he said, she said” case and without criminal liability, who cares what he said? It was not illegal. And it does not sound like there is enough evidence to cross the threshold of a preponderance even without the requirement of a unanimous verdict.
One huge shout out to DeShaun for standing up for his word and not settling straight away. Hopefully, now there will not be any exchange of money. Except for the millions it cost him in legal fees, he will not suffer any more financially and more importantly, his word will mean more than ever.
Just my view on this – I put the blame for this squarely at the foot of the Texans owner and the shyster lawyer, who happen to be neighbors in the most expensive neighborhood in Houston. The women – I do not know. I doubt the majority speak English as their native language, I doubt they fully understood what was going to happen, and they were promised big bucks by a smooth-talking lawyer. They signed on the dotted line – I just have a tough time blaming them.
I am sure the lawyer was trying to cap on the “me too” movement. It seems almost absurd to try and put sexual harassment out there when the occupation is sex. And make no mistake, these massage parlors that are open 24/7 do not exist for tired muscles…they are about sex. To me, he mocked legitimate claims of harassment.
Some people will always say he should have been charged, tried, and found guilty. That will never change. I believe most people will agree with how this came out and be happy for DW4. I know I am.
Good on Deshaun for sticking to his guns and being patient. Had he rushed to settle the civil cases, he would have implied guilt…or at least a grand jury could have interpreted it that way. Now, he has great leverage in those civil cases. At the very least, this saved him a LOT of money and gave him at least a measure of redemption. He has endured the slings and arrows for a year, and that genie can’t be put back in the bottle. He could potentially even countersue, either the accusers or their attorney.
That said, I still hate that he put himself in this position. Criminally liable or not, this showed some arrogance and questionable judgment. I feel like he can regain his reputation by learning from this.
And I am so happy that he can play ball again. Deshaun played high school sports with my nephews, so I have had the opportunity to meet him a couple of times. He actually came to DKS when two of my nephews were playing baseball for Furman to watch the game with my brother and his wife. He is a great young man. I am excited to see where his life and career go from here.
