I should have known better.

Oct 2, 2022, 2:41 PM

By claiming DJ couldn't do this (because he hadn't previously) or that (because he never seemed to try) I made a fool of myself.

On a passing play, I did not believe DJ had the ability to look anywhere after the snap except to the primary receiver. He made a fool out of me last night when he rotated his head several times and threw strikes to receivers who may or may not have been his primary. I'm sorry I disrespect him.

Because he wasn't throwing to anyone moving laterally I assumed he couldn't during a game because he was not capable of locating a pass to a laterally moving target. He did that at least three times last night. My (the fool's) prediction was that he would throw the ball in such circumstance such that it would be tipped and caught by someone not wearing Orange. I assumed which as we know 'makes an ### of you and me.' In this situation the 'as,'s was me alone.

The worst mistake, and one which most humbles me was doubt that Dabo was being totally truthful. I never intentionally believe he was dishonest by any measure but somehow this old fool found a way to ignore what Dabo said about his our starting quarterback and believed against what Dabo told us.

There is not some magical way to apologize and redeem myself here but to be a man I just plainly say I'm sorry. I apologize to Dabo first for doubting him, to DJ for disrespecting him and all the work he put into redemption for last years troubles and to you, my Clemson Sisters and Brothers who have not punished me for my doubts.

I hereby promise with good intent that I will not doubt Dabo again. Maybe I wasn't as bad as I say but I was more wrong than I have words to express and I commend those who hanged tough through the hard times and congratulate you good fellows for your faithfulness.

I should have known better.

Staring down receivers was DJ's BIGGEST fault by far!!!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It could not have worked out better.

Oct 2, 2022, 2:53 PM

I'm not suggesting he intentionally stared down his primary but I'm positive NCS' defense was misled by it. I'm so delighted with DJ's progress I'm about to bust.

I rejoiced when he threw those strikes to those with crossing type routes. I do not want to dismiss the protection he enjoyed either. Our linemen on both sides were more than sufficient, they did a great job.

Defenses are no longer loading the box and daring DJ to beat them with his arm. They are now respecting the passing game. It is real progress.

DJ's turnaround has been nothing short of miraculous

Oct 2, 2022, 3:29 PM

I was right there with you with my doubts when the season started. He absolutely looks like "the guy" now. Confident, poised, making good decisions, a lot more accuracy. Man Im honestly really really happy for the kid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He is not as good as he will be come season's end.

Oct 2, 2022, 3:36 PM

I no longer doubt his skills. I suspect we will see him do more and more as this season progresses. I believe he is on a short rope and Dabo, with great care, is allowing him to continue growing. I also believe he will make mistakes but I'm positive he will learn from them and that Dabo will put him in a position to either fail or succeed, such risky trials will increase his confidence which he lacked before.

Oct 2, 2022, 3:42 PM

around Dabo is still right at the surface for lots of people on here.

I don’t get it.

If he blunders - he fixes it. ( K Steele, Napier, etc, etc)

He wants Clemson to be the absolute BEST - even more than I do - which is nearly impossible.

Yet many on here go on and on - in the name of “chatting” - in the name of “he’s not infallible” …..

The list is STOOPID long of him being right in the end and the masses on here being abysmally wrong

T Etienne
Nolan Turner
HIMSELF
Venables kids

Heck - way down the list, I’d even say his kids. They have been a non-issue at holder and have been dudes committed to the culture.
But the naysayers will jump all over that one.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I never complained about any decisions Dabo made. Steele and Napier were the best that could be done with the limits set on Dabo and those he set upon himself. They might have been the best he could hire at the time, I'd certainly like to think so.

Oct 3, 2022, 8:16 AM [ in reply to Great post. The thing is - the 2nd guessing and division ]

Give me Mickens or Mukuba all day over him! I thought Turner was serviceable but missed way too many tackles.

idiots - Dabo taking care of his own, here we go again, Dabo wanting to stay close to Alabama for when he makes the jump . . . . on and on and on . . . .

Dude played a roll in 2 National Championship teams - I think - too lazy to look it up.

He was a player - contributed - earned everything he got. While Dabo got roasted for it.

Unless you were there, and I doubt any of us were, you cannot understand how much adversity last year's team faced. DJU did not forget football between the Notre Dame game his freshman year and last year. His freshman year he was surrounded by very, very good players and last year it was often 2nd team players and sometimes even 3rd team. This year on offense we have been relatively healthy and that has made all the difference in the world.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dude, I’m right with ya….

Oct 2, 2022, 4:30 PM

After all we saw last year, and even this year in the GT game 1st half. DJ looked like a guy that couldn’t make it at this level.

Evidence: staring down receivers. Immobile in the pocket. No throws to the middle of the field. Dumbed down playbook. Tripping over his own feet. Poor ball protection. No touch on passes. Sailing passes over Wr in the flat. Always looked scared.

But since GT he is a different guy. He looks confident, makes reads, throws all over the field, made good decisions, has touch on the ball, hasn’t fumbled, running better, the dude has command of the field in all aspects.

I really think all the stuff in his personal life messed him up last year, but he’s come through that and is now the champion that we all hoped he could be.

I like you am overjoyed at his success, and through some interviews you can’t find a more humble likable leader.

I’m so excited for the rest of the season with this new DJ. He just might take us back to the top.

DJ is much better than last year and up to number 41 in passing efficiency. Let us hope he continues to improve. Grayson McCall (Coastal) is third and Chase Brice is 18. Sam Hartman is 10. Drake Maye (UNC is fourth and Jordan Travis (FSU) is number 16.

One big difference is that the OLine has been giving much

Oct 2, 2022, 5:26 PM

better protection. I don't remember any game the last couple of years in which he had as much time to look the field over as he did last night. At times last year he looked like he thought he had to get rid of the ball really quick or he would get hit. Heck one time last year he took the snap , turned his back to the line of scrimmage and braced for the hit with barely a look down field.

Not at first.

Oct 2, 2022, 7:14 PM

They crushed our oline when backers rushed until DJ proved to their defense they had to stay back and defend the middle of the field. The one on one at the LOS became much more manageable.

freshman when called upon, and had what it took to be a big-time star at Clemson. I believed that he was better than what we saw last year, and that IF and when he got things straightened out, he could be the next great Clemson QB. Have I been frustrated with him at times? Dang right I have. Did I question whether or not he would return to greatness? Absolutely. Still, I never wrote him off. I knew I wasn't there every day like Dabo. I didn't know DJ, and I didn't have any real knowledge of everything he was going through ... like Dabo did. I just know that what I saw from DJ as a freshman was the 5-Star QB we recruited, and that as a soph, something was wrong. The frustration from fans was understandable, but I'm glad Dabo is in charge, and T-Net is not.

But honestly, I was right there until I started rewatching the games from last year without emotion. The more games I watched, the more I realized that it wasn't all his fault, and he would flash too.

I secretly hoped the flashes were really who he was and just needed some things around him to improve. I think they have, and he worked hard without blaming anyone else.

It's hard not to be proud of DJ.

It's one of those times when you love that you're wrong. Now we can all be happy with our QB. Any holdouts will come around eventually.

DJ is doing great and we are all happy. But just to give us something to worry about, he is running a lot more now. He also runs like a fullback being big as he is. I hope he is not injured. When he was shaking his hand during the game like it was injured, I was worried.
